You're Precious: Part II
Leaning against the wall near the window, Veera looks outside quietly. It is raining heavily. She feels as if the rains are narrating the tale of her current state of her mind and heart. She is drown in an ocean of varieties of thoughts. She feels so numb at the moment. Baldev walks to her with a cup of coffee. 'Aye le! Aye peele aur so jaa. Kal subha jaldi jaana bhi toh hai uss kisaan se milne de vaaste. Tu bas ab aye soch ki tere papaji da sapna kaise pura karna hai.' He encourages her to be strong and tries to boost up her confidence.
Veera stares at him gratefully. She seems speechless to think about how he always has been supporting her ever since they arrived in a foreign country. She has no one with her at the moment except him. He is the only one she can trust blindly without thinking. She smiles adoringly, seeing him enjoying the weather. 'Thank you Baldeva... Humesha mere saath rehne vaaste. Mainu khud se phir se pyaar karna seekhane de vaaste!', she murmurs under her breath, making sure that he does not hear. She further remembers what he had said to her sometime ago when she was broken and vulnerable...
'Tu hai tab hi toh hum sab ki khushiyan hai. Tu hai issi vaaste aaj aye Baldev Singh sahi raaste pe aaya hai. Tu hai issi vaaste tere veer da sapna pura ho raha hai.. Tera veer khush hai, teri vajah se, Veera. Tera pura parivaar tujhpe garv karna hai, kyunki tu woh karne jaa rahi hai, jiski baatein hi sirf sab karte aaye hai... Tere papaji da sapna pura karna! Aur woh bhi aise videshi tariko se... Kisi ne bhi aye socha nahi hoga, sivaaye tere. Upar tere papaji bhi tainu vekhke muskuraa rahe honge yaar... Vishwaas kar.. Tere bina hum sab, hum sab di khushiyaa kuch nahi honda...'
Her smile widens as his words echoed near her ears. For the first time, someone has made her feel like a queen; feel so special that she cannot express in words. 'Ik gal poochu?' she stops smiling and asks him seriously yet hesitantly as she takes a sip of her coffee.
'Pooch!' Baldev replies, looking at the rainfall and admiring the beauty of the unknown city when it is drenched.
'Tu mere vaaste aye sab kyun kar raha hai?' Veera curiously questions him. 'Bina koi shart ke, bina kisi vajah ke, tu humesha mere naal rehta hai, mera saath deta hai. Jitna tere bas vich ho, sab karta hai... Kis vaaste?' she adds confusedly.
'Aye ki ajeeb sa sawaal hai... Tu bhul gai ki? Tune hi kaha tha ki hum dono dost hai.. Ussi vaaste aur ki...' Baldev answers casually without meeting her eyes.
Veera observes his face carefully and is assured that he has something else in his heart. Baldev knows that she is staring at him yet he does not face her.
'Koi dosti vich bhi aye sab nahi karta jo tu kar raha hai... Ek anjaan desh vich mere vaaste aa gaya tu, bina kuch soche samjhe... Main apne papaji da sapna pura karne de vaaste aai hoon, par tu kyun aaya inne dur? Apne ghar se dur? Mere naal? Kyun?'
'Veera, dimaag kharab mat kar! Mainu neend aa rahi hai.. Apne kamre vich jaa raha hu.' Baldev is about to leave when Veera grabs his wrist tightly. 'Mere sawaalo se bhaag kyun raha hai? Kuch chupa raha hai ki?'
Baldev looks around nervously. Veera stands in front of him. 'Nazre kyun chura raha hai, Baldeva? Bol na kuch...'
He gazes in her eyes deeply, and she can easily see pure love and care for herself in his. Somewhere deep down, they both know what is going on in their hearts, but they do not want to accept it. They do not want to see how incomplete they are without each other. There is an awkward silence. A silence that they do not even know what it is for.
'Sirf dosti!' He firmly states and seems a bit harsh and rude.
Veera smiles slightly. 'Jhoot!'
'Sach hai!' He insists.
'Phir se jhoot!' Veera confidently says.
Baldev sighs and moves away. He lowers his eyes and wonders as to why he cannot say firmly that he is supporting her only because of their friendship. What is stopping him? What is making him hesitant? Why cannot he tell determinedly that she is just his friend and nothing else? He is baffled and slowly and steadily every moment they had spend together flashed in his mind. He remembers how once he had a special affection for Veera and how he wanted to marry her and make her his.
Are those feelings coming back in him again? He questions himself worriedly. He glances Veera who is looking at him in awe, perhaps knowing what emotions he nurtures for her in his heart. He brushes all his thoughts away.
'Tu sirf meri dost hai aur kuch nahi samjhi! Ki bakwaas baat leke baith gai tu aur mera dimaag bhi kha rahi hai..' he comments annoyingly. 'Aur waise bhi tu aye sab kyun pooch rahi hai, tere dil vich mere vaaste toh kuch nahi hai na...' he adds, making Veera nervous. He is saying right... Why is she confronting him over this? It is good if she is just his friend. Why is she expecting him to feel something else for her rather than friendship?
They both are in their own world of thoughts, wondering what they mean to each other after all. What is making them react this way? They steal glances at each other. There is a bit of discomfort and awkwardness.
'Mainu neend aa rahi hai tu bhi sone jaa...' Veera says to him plainly and lies on her bed, putting the blanket over her. She does look nervous, but is hiding it from him.
'Main thodi der vaaste baahar hoke aata hu.' Baldev exits the room anxiously. Veera removes the blanket from her face and looks on at the doorway. 'Main Baldev se kyun aye sab pooch rahi thi? Kyun woh mainu jawaab dene se katra raha tha? Kyun maine uske aakhon vich dosti se barkar kuch vekhne lagi? Rab ji ki ho raha hai aye sab?' She is lost in the midst of confusions and several questions, when suddenly says her inner voice that Baldev Singh matters a lot to her, maybe much more than she can think of. He is precious, says the voice inside her, making her shocked at the unexpected revelation.
