After reading many posts, I am wondering:
Does Ruq love Jalal more than herself and her audha? Once Jo had asked her this Q and she hadn't answered. Can you answer?

Will she still love Jalal if he takes away her titles and reduces her to a mere begum?

Does she "love him or love her importance to him"?

Is hers an "independent love" not requiring reciprocity?

Will she still love Jalal if he also loves Jo?

Will she still love Jalal if he moves away from her to love Jo?

Pl share your views freely, but please don't drag Jo into this. This is strictly about Jalal and Ruq.

Ruqs loves herself > Her love for Jalal
Her jealousy, her ego, her audha, her need for being the most important person in Jalal's life will always be her downfall.

Though, she will always love Jalal and stay beside him in all his decisions BUT she loves herself the most, and would want Jalal to open up to her FIRST! As, I sad her IMPORTANCE in Jalal's life affects her the most than her LOVE for Jalal..This has been shown twice now! And, CV's will continue to show that!

We will see what happens when she finally realizes that Jalal will never love her the way he loves Jodha..And, I think CV's are going to put as much negativity into Ruqs in that track..Unless Jalal as an emperor orders her to stay away from Jodha as he loves Jodha, she will always be a thorn waiting for her claws to come out in front of Jodha.

So, yes she loves Jalal, but I believe she loves the position that she holds in Jalal's life more, which is the main reason that she is willing to stand by him in all his decisions b/c she thinks that she will be the topmost priority to him!

Yes,she does. But her airheaded behavior masks it sometimes. I dont know why,but I have always had a soft corner for her. She longs for Jalal, but since their relationship is almost as old as them,Jalal made her believe that he actually does not have a heart. And thus, she can be closest to him in the form of his best friend. And that's it,there can be nothing more.

Thus,Ruqaiya built herself that way. But somewhere down the lane, she fell in love with her husband, but she dare not say that out loud to him, since that would somehow make her feel as though she has let him down. Because he relates to her for the very reason that she believes in his believes-he doesn't own a heart and thus 'love' is no where in the picture.

Poor girl, fell in love, but she can't say that she does, fearing her friendship with Jalal might have cracks.

These are a few instances which would clearly make you 'feel' for Ruqaiya and find that she does love Jalal

-There was a scene during the Smiley phase, when she is with Jalal and he is telling something about how she understands him..that he doesn't have a heart etc...she looks away from him and sheds tears without his knowledge. She wept because she felt she had betrayed him somehow by falling in love with him. She felt as though she was lieing to him. Also, this was one instance she felt the pinch of not being able to give him a child.

-During the Jodha pseudo pregnancy track,Hoshiyaar once mentioned having Jodha's child killed,so that she doesn't becoem MUZ(which has higher priority). Ruqaiya slaps Hoshiyaar and tells her to never say that ever again. She does want to become a mother, but she would NEVER cause such pain to Jalal. She is happy that her Jalal is going to become a father.

-The divorce track. There was one scene when Salima reads out the letter Ruqaiya had written. There was this one line which said "Humein dukh iss baat se nahi ki Jalal humein apne se door kar rahe hain. Par iss baat se hai ki,aaj tak,naa hi humne Jalal ki siva kisi aur ko apna maana,na kisi aur ko apna banaana chaaha. Isliye, iss talaak ke baad, hum iss duniya mein poori tarha se akele ho jaayenge..."

It was so heart-breaking.

I do agree Ruqaiya has been selfish at times. But if you've noticed, its only when she feels her relationship with Jalal is threatened.

A lady who could place jalal-jodha's unborn child above her favourite muz position ----- how can you say that she loves herself more than jalal? All the 3 instances disha has quoted stand proof to what she is.
If at all there is a flaw in their relationship jalal is to blame. He has made it that way. He has taken her for granted and hasn't taken half the effort he has taken with jodha to overcome them.

Ruqs loves Jalal but hers is an old love going back to childhood and a shared history, yes, she wants to be the only one or at least the most important one in his life, unfortunate that he cannot give her that place. Her love is possessive and she wants all that he has for herself, his position, her importance therefore. Would she love him if he stripped her of her titles? She would be bitter and probably resent him. Would she love him if he were no longer emperor and just a common man? I believe she would.
Will she move away to make way for Jo in Jalal's life? Reluctantly so, sorrowfully so, but move away she will as she does love Jalal and wants his happiness with the same ferocity with which she guards her importance to him. It is an old habit, she will always care for him no matter what, that is her fate in life. The arrogant Ruquaiya has given her heart to Jalal a long while ago and mask it as she may by pretending she cares not by choosing new begums for him, she does want to be his choicest, most beloved begum of all. Her insistence that he doesn't have a heart is cos she doesn't want to believe he has one and she has not been able to capture it. She is a little kid in her tantrums, in her self importance, in her attachment to Jalal. That is why, he will never be able to shake himself free of her ever and nor will he want to. He may love Jodha with all the passion of youth but he loves Ruqs with all the loyalty, caring and fidelity of family.

Ruq loves Jalal but she has major ego problems too. Loving Jalal and Shehenshah are the same for her. Dont think she will love another if they become shehenshah, only with Jalal her loves works. But she has major complex about being the most important begum.

She truly is a fascinating character, is she not...flawed, deeply flawed, but with a single minded devotion to this one dude, who is her cousin, her best friend...and sadly... her husband. I actually find the real Ruqqaiya, not the character here as much..very intriguing. The real one grew up in the toughest of times, surrounded by conflict..and until Jalal establishes his supremacy by brute force...lived in a constant state of insecurity...no wonder they were so fiercely close...they only had each other to trust completely...
And I said sadly earlier... 'coz I have often wondered what she would have grown into...if this marriage had not been thrust upon her, if she was given the opportunities that say, Jodha...was given...of having the freedom to be ...just be...the baseline ingredients for a truly formidable woman seem to have been there in both...intelligence, strong willed, stubborn, ..they make fascinating parallel study graphs of personality development..
Would that Ruqqaiya have chosen Jalal...if she had a choice...?

But,as regards to the character shown here...I see her thusly...This is how she has been allowed to grow up...indulged, pampered and spoilt...her every wish and needed instantly gratified , after all ...she was Empress of a country when she was what..11...and how many wise 11 year olds are there???...esp. When you put pampered and spoilt into that context...
Has she seen anything of the world outside her harem...her knowledge of harem politics can rival that of Maham Anga...and she is very good at running the place in manner that would make a General proud...but what does she truly know of the world outside? She has never had to connect with her subjects. She is distantly benevolent, and kind...there is a strong core of caring and compassion there...but it does not seem implacable...integrity is there..but only as it relates to Jalal ..her status is paramount, but what else is there? Because, to put it simply...nothing else is expected from her...nothing..all she knows and gleans is from second hand information...either from palace sources or from her husband.
She is headstrong...but selfish...not headstrong and tenacious like Jodha...and when you add the integrity and selflessness factor there...no wonder , even in the midst of all of Jodha's hatred...HE finds that she is the one he reposes his faith in most...also, this is a marriage that HE actively pursued..it was not thrust upon him...this is his choice...HE chooses HER...JODHA...and history does seem to indicate that..

I remember on my Istanbul trip, during a tour if the Topkapi...a guide saying that the harem was probably the most rigidly run institution in the palace...and not a pleasure party house...even the Sultan was not above its rules...and it was usually run tightly by the Dowager ...or the Sultan's mother...here it is not Hamida who runs it, but Ruqqaiya...and to rein in a palace full of women...is no picnic..
