Shikhandini was born a girl, but she later turned into a boy (this was supposed to be before Draupadi's birth actually) because there is a story behind it.

When Shikhandini was born, Drupad had expected her to be a boy because there was a prophesy that his first child would be the cause of Bhishma's death, and since women did not fight in wars he expected the child to be a boy. When Shikhandini was born, he hid the fact that she was a girl and raised her like a boy, so that he could teach her warfare and prepare her to fight with Bhishma one day. No one in the palace knew she was a girl. Then when she came of marriageable age, Drupad was in a dilemma because his child was really a girl, but everyone thought it was a boy, so feeling helpless he married her off to a princess (don't remember her name). When the princess came to know she was cheated and had married a girl, she was furious and wrote a letter to her father, who came to wage a war against Panchal in revenge. Feeling frightened, Shikhandini ran away from Panchal and met a yaksha in the forests. The yaksha had done something wrong and was running away from Kuber. The yaksha suggested that he and Shikhandini exchange genders so that both would be safe from whoever they were running from. Shikhandini agreed and became a boy named Shikhandi. She returned to Panchal and the princess's father was satisfied seeing that his daughter had married a prince after all. Meanwhile, Kuber came to know what the yaksha had done and was furious. He cursed the yaksha that he would have to remain a female until Shikhandi died. So when Shikhandi was later killed in the war, that is when the yaksha got back his actual gender.

I don't know when SP will show Shikhandi's story. She was supposed to become a boy before the birth of Draupadi and Dhristadyumna. 🤔 Maybe they forgot and will keep her like this only. 😆
