There is this enigmatic verse in Sankrit about the Panch Kanyas by reciting this verse can remove the sins.

Sanskrit transliteration
ahaly draupad st tr mandodar tath
pacakany smarennitya mahptakanin

English translation
Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita, Tara and Mandodari

One should forever remember the panchakanya who are the destroyers of great sins.

. A variant replaces Sita with Kunti:[4]

I was wondering why they are called kanyas as the word Kanya is a young girl why is the term "kanya" used in the "five virgins tradition", and not stree.

Coming to think of this none of the women were virgins..may be Kunti as all her children were born by the boons bestowed to her and not by having conjugal relation.

Draupadi was blessed by Shiva that she would have 5 husbands and every morning she would still be a virgin..😉 lol this is amusing though..so she is evergreen virgin despite having 5 husbands..

But how come Sita ....Mandodari (Ravanas wife and later weds Vibhishana) ....Ahalya the wife of sage Gautama ..Tara wife of( Vaanara King Vaali and later marries Sugriva) are called virgins despite being married and being mothers intrigues me.Lot of thesis and books are written on this topic and there is mine of information..The interesting part is by remembering the the five virgins leads to redemption of grievous sins. 😕

If we notice three women Sita,Mandodari and Ahalya are from Ramayana and the remaining two Kunti and Draupadi from Mahabharatha.

On the flip side why not when Gods and men having multiple wives are revered and are still worshiped why cant these BRAVE women who were so courageous and path breaking women and were ahead of their times in those days..

We can have a lot of debate and discussions on the trails ,tribulations and triumphs of these Paanch Kanyas ...

I salute the five heroines of our great epics and bow down in reverence.Lets not have any resistance in accepting them for their valor and none of them ever broke down when personal tragedies struck them ...All of them were WOMEN OF SUBSTANCE.

my interpretation is that in this sloka 'virgin' is not meant in its literal sense, rather it refers to the virtuous characters of these women. It refers to their determination and courage for adhering to what was right and for not breaking down at any point during their terrible hardships. To put it simply-
virginity = "unbreakable" strength
Such quality was rarely found in women of that era (and even today!).

Ahhh interesting that there is another set.

I always did wonder how come Savitri and Ansuya never made the Five women list, but it makes sense if there are two groups.

Yes, there are two lists. Many people confuse Sita being a part of the maha kanyas, but she was part of the maha satis. The maha kanyas were five women who were considered virgins although they had controversy attached to their names. The Maha Satis were the five most virtuous wives of Hindu mythology. There were others of course, but these five are considered the greatest and chanting their names is supposed to be auspicious.
