I just came across an old article where it's said that Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan were first and second choices for Swades.Film Experts say Swades flopped because of SRK's larger than life lover boy image and audience couldn't relate to the simple character of Mohan Bhargava.
Do you think Swades would have been a success if Aamir/ Hrithik had done it considering they are more versatile than SRK and have succeeded in different genres?

SRK WAS DESTINED TO DO 'SWADES'
What man proposes God disposes is a saying. It's not wrong though. Ashutosh Gowarikar wished his 'Lagaan's hero Aamir Khan to produce his next 'Swades' too. Ashutosh had written the script and offered the lead role to Aamir, but the latter sought more time, as he was busy in view of the 'Lagaan' being nominated to Oscars. When Aamir returned India empty handed, Ashutosh offered him again, but he neither accepted it nor declined it. Really speaking, Aamir did not want to do a film on the subject of a village for a few years after doing 'Lagaan'. He made it clear to Ashutosh too. Meanwhile, he signed Bobby Bedi's mega film 'The Rising' at a record price. This was a great shock for Ashutosh, who then offered the lead role to Hrithik Roshan. The latter heard the script and sought a week's time to make up his mind.
After a week Ashutosh visited Hrithik again, who though praised the script, but declined to act in it. This left no choice for Ashutosh except involving his long lost friend Shah Rukh Khan. SRK listened to the script and told his friend to get ready to resume shooting. Besides, SRK reduced his price and gave Ashutosh dates for three months at a time. Then, Ashutosh realized that Shah Rukh Khan was destined to do his film. Now, both SRK and Ashutosh are very happy that the movie is getting good reviews, and may emerge as the best movie of Shah Rukh until now.
