Frankly, both Lagaan and Jodha Akbar are much more commercial friendly films than Swades. Swades is very SUBTLE...people called it a documentary...and others think its only for NRI audience. It's easily Gowariker's least commercial film, yet bravest.
Lagaan and JA are both extremely dramatic films, albeit long. Lagaan is based on cricket and the underdog Indians beating the oppressive Brits despite all odds being against them. Its much more masaalafied for lack of a better word. JA is a long historical drama, but its a dramatic film...with a good chemistry between the lead couple.
Swades is none of that. It would never have worked with Hrithik. Would have been worse than Guzaarish. At that time Hrithik was only successful with Rakesh Roshan's films anyways, where he played larger than life heroes. Even with Aamir, I am not sure. Aamir's films like RDB, TZP weren't slow and subtle..they were quite dramatic.
