On the specialty scene, UTV's action-comedy Chennai Express broke the record for the biggest Bollywood opening ever with an estimated $2.2M from 196 locations for a $11,352 average. Cume since the Thursday launch is $2.5M. Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine expanded well again with an estimated $2.5M from 119 sites for a $21,202 average and $6.2M sum for Sony Classics.

You are missing out the positives while looking at the negatives. Balaji+Akki agreeing to shift OUATIMD...if Akki would have had a big ego and put his foot down they wouldnt have shifted. The trailer had a great response so half the battle was won already. Eid falling on Friday and the same being a holiday in most places. South side competition from Vijay and Pawan Kalyan being eliminated due to politics and finally the biggest of them all-an entertaining film hence good WOM.

I wonder if Balaji is happy right now or regretful that they moved OUATIMD's release day. On one side, it's good that they moved it or OUATIMD might have been crushed looking at CE's response. But on the other hand, this was OUATIMD's original release date before CE came into the picture. If they didn't listen to SRK's pleas, and got him to move CE instead, maybe OUATIMD could have raked in all this money instead because the timing with Eid falling on Friday is A+.

Oh well. Go CE!!! 🥳

Chennai Express First Weekend Box Office Collection. Records Smashed.

Chennai Express has smashed the Opening Weekend record of Indian Box Office by a huge margin. CE has crossed 100 crore nett mark on Sunday itself. It has collected around 32.5 crore nett on Sunday, which is just historic. Thus, film collected around 100+ crore nett within 4 days, which is just unimaginable. Earlier record was held by Ek Tha Tiger which able to touch 100 crore in 5 days.

Thus, Chennai Express has broken all opening records at the Indian Box Office. Film has taken the biggest opening in Paid Preview, Opening Day and now Opening Weekend. Also, Chennai Express is the only film ever to collect more than 30 crore nett in two different days. This determines the potential of Box Office and how big it is growing with each passing day.

Sunday collections are near to the same level with Friday. Compared to Saturday, collections was much better, despite Saturday collections being big. Occupancy on Sunday was nearly same as on Friday with little variation here and there.

Chennai Express has performed to optimum level in its opening weekend. No one can imagine a better number than this. Real test of Chennai Express will start from Monday that is today. If film sustains well on Monday and say Tuesday, then every record is in danger and new records will be the box office benchmark.

Collection Breakup -

Thursday (Paid Preview) - 6.5 crore nett.

Friday - 33.1 crore nett.

Saturday - 28.05 crore nett.

Sunday - 32.5 crore nett (Estimates).

Total - 100.15 crore nett.
