Abhijeet's car mishap and driver woes
A while back, Abhijeet Sawant had met with a minor accident while reversing his Honda City — the car he bagged along with the Idol title.
"Yes, I was at the wheel when it happened," admits Sawant. "There were just a few scratches and it needed a touch-up job."
Sawant says that he was in a hurry. The fact that he does not have a chauffeur adds to his problem. "I want to keep a driver but the kind of schedule I keep from early morning to late night, I don't think any driver would survive.
There are so many commitments and functions to attend, so I drive myself all the while."
Music Reviews Of Aapka Abhijeet!
Abhijeet Sawant is the story of a man who believed in himself. Abhijeet Sawant is the story of a man who proved to be a ' lambi race ka ghoda '. Abhijeet Sawant is the story of a man who is India's first Idol, and is out to swoon the audience with his namesake debut album ' Aapka...Abhijeet Sawant '. Barely a month since being crowned 'Indian Idol' by the music lovers, the promise of a solo album is fulfilled with 10 tracks composed by Prempal Hans, Hardip Sidhu and Biddu.
' Mohabbatein Lutaaunga ', a version, each of which were required to be sung by the 'Indian Idol' finalists Abhijeet Sawant and Amit Sana, forms the opening and the concluding track of the album. The first version is a soulful number with high dose of melody. With a strong 'desert' flavor accompanying the track throughout, it is a marvelous piece of music that is as swooning as it gets! Chorus around Abhijeet is mesmerizing while the overall arrangements are high class. Sameer's lyrics are simple yet elegant and reflect the journey of Abhijeet's journey from nowhere to stardom and do not fail to mention the people who have contributed to this success. A complete package, it is Abhijeet's silky and original voice that makes the track a class apart. This one can easily fit into any A-grade musical film!
' Lafzon Mein ' is another melodious masterpiece that is just an ideal gift for your loved one. Composed by Biddu, a subtle echo effect that accompanies Abhijeet's voice gives an out of world feel to the song. Abhieet pitches his voice through varied expressions and the result is a number that can easily compete with ' Mohabbatein.. ' for a place at the top.
' Jaana ', originally from the movie ' Star ', proves yet again that why Biddu was always ahead of the times. The duet that was composed a couple of decades back is re-packaged, this time with Abhijeet and Prajakta Shukre (another of the Indian Idol finalists) in the lead. Written by Amit Khanna, it is a soft'n'slow song that could get anyone listening to it in a romantic bliss. A special word for Prajakta – her vocals are pleasant to the ears and one would wish to hear more from her in near future!
Opening strings of guitar in ' Kya Tujhe Pata Hai ' announce that love is in the air. Sita Manghnani's English lyrics and vocals in the background bring about a certain contemporary style to the entire song that should be picked up easily by the metro youth. Also there is a Kishore Kumar feel to the number that makes it a fourth successive hummable song in a row. So far the album makes a good impression on your heart and you expect the dream journey to continue.
The subtle echo effect from ' Lafzon Mein ' continues with ' Janam Janam ' that has a distinct soft Indi-pop feel to it. Abhijeet's sugarcoated voice stays consistent across tracks that ensures that the lovey-dovey mood is maintained and there is not a single moment of boredom. ' Lamha ' that follows next is a retro hip-hop music composed by Prempal-Hardip combo. An Arabian-Western fusion, the number has been arranged in such fashion that Abhijeet's voice plays in the background while the musical instruments stay in the forefront.
Vintage Biddu, as in the days of ' Disco Deewaane ', comes in the form of ' Yaaron Chalo ', that belongs to the early 80s era and follows the route of yet another 'Beat one - Beat two' retro style. Unlike the mushy feel that Abhijeet's vocals had in the numbers prior to this, this time around he goes full throttle and sings in a high pitch. After ' Lamha ' and ' Yaaron ', one misses Abhijeet who sung four soulful romantic tracks prior to these two. No doubt that he sings these two numbers well but his prime forte seems to be lying in melody and this is where he scores most. The stamp on this comes there and then with the track ' Dreamgirl ' from the namesake movie, which he sings in his own subtle style. He doesn't let the great Kishoreda down and does justice to the timeless melody!
All the 11 Indian Idol finalists come together for the song with a message - ' Ek Jahan ' (One World). With original music by Lionel Richie, Paul Barry & Mark Taylor and additional music and lyrics by Raju Singh and Sameer respectively, the striking part of the song is that one never realizes throughout the number that it has 11 singers playing their parts, at times solo and sometimes in a chorus. The flow is smooth while the overall composition has a grand feel to it. Though the song is not one of those romantic ones that you could listen on continuously, it still doesn't get into heavy duty documentary style sermonizing that sometimes makes one loose interest in a song altogether.
Faster version of ' Mohabbatein Lutaaunga ', that marked the winning performance of Abhijeet Sawant in the finals, makes for an apt conclusion of his debut album. A deadly combination of rhythm with melody results in a chartbuster track that should take ' Aapka Abhijeet Sawant ' straight into your hearts.
One feels strongly for the honest singing of Abhijeet in his very first album that would ensure that the talented singer blazes from your music systems soon. With many more years ahead of him and the backing of the biggies that matter, it shouldn't be too long before we see him entertaining the music lovers with playback singing as well. And going by his acting performance in his debut video of ' Mohabbatein ', who knows Abhijeet may also be our next blue eyed – chocolate faced singer'cum' actor!
Interview-Abhijeet Sawant
His USP is his simplicity and his greatest asset (apart from his voice) is his smile. You can say he has been smiling his way into the hearts of the viewers and (voters) since day one, and is currently smiling and singing his way to the bank. Pretty cool eh ..
Life has taken a new turn for Abhijeet Sawant ever since he became Indian Idol. The son of Sridhar Pandurang Sawant, a BMC employee, Abhijeet has turned his dream into a reality and tops the inspiration list for many aspiring singers, who wish to become rich and famous via their singing talent. And the lad is in no mood to let them down.
So has he accustomed himself to all the hype and publicity following him anywhere and everywhere, or is he still learning to do so. "I think I have taken it in my stride. In fact now, I feel awkward if someone doesn't recognize me when I am walking down the streets. I start wondering what's wrong!"
Which means he has no qualms being stared at, hounded by the press where ever he goes, etc… "Absolutely no problem. The fact that they hound me only proves that they love me and reflects on my popularity."
How long does he think will this hype last? Won't the hype die out when the next Indian Idol comes on the scene the next year. "That depends entirely on me. If I am successful in living up to people's expectations I think I will be able to sustain."
What does he have to say to his critics who shunned him when he won the Indian Idol title saying that he won only because Amit Sana (the runner up), was not as good looking, and not because Abhijeet is a better singer. "Some people will say anything. If Amit Sana would have won, then they would say that he got sympathy votes and that Abhijeet deserved it more. At the end of the day the deserving candidate only wins."
So he does feel that he deserved the title. "Yes, of course, and I have worked hard for it too."
And what would Abhijeet Sawant be doing today if he would not have won Indian Idol?
"I would be a struggling singer. I always wanted to be a singer." And would he make it to the top even if there was no Indian Idol? " I always wanted to be a singer. If there was no Indian Idol, I would be struggling for a longer period of time, but I would not have quit, till I got recognition as a singer. It was my dream to be a playback singer. And I think I would have surely made it some day."
One thing most people want to know is that who does Abhijeet Sawant think deserved to be Indian Idol, if not for him. Tough one for him to answer. "Amit Sana, he was the runner up, so if not me it would have been him," he says diplomatically.
After a little coaxing and rephrasing the question, and putting it back to him as, "If you were not participating in Indian Idol at all, then as a viewer who would you think be the ideal choice,?" he says,
"Hmmm…well as Indian Idol is about the entire packaging, I think Prajakta Shukre would have been perfect."
Did he ever think he would win the title when he joined the contest. "When I joined I knew one thing, that out of all these aspirants, only one will win. So I didn't keep my hopes very high, though my aim was to win."
Now that he has got the fame and recognition and appreciation he craved for, does he plan to take up acting offers? "Not at the moment. I have no time at all to devote to anything else except promoting my album."
What are the other unexplored talents of Abhijeet Sawant? "I love playing cricket, and am a big fan of the game. Apart from singing and that no other talent." What about dancing. Can the idol shake a leg? "No, I don't know to dance at all," he smiles.
Suddenly the door opens, a lady barges in and gushes, "Did you recognize me", to a puzzled Abjijeet. "I stay in B- type", she continues. Abhijeet's memory is now refreshed and he nods positively. Then 3 more children enter the room and the lady quips, " the children wanted to meet you, so brought them…". And our singing sensation nods obediently once more and chats a little with the children before continuing with the interview. How sweet is that!!
Now its time for that aspect of his life which most people are interested in knowing. His love life. "I don't have a love life. And don't have the time either for love now", he says looking visibly sad at that answer. Has he made a conscious decision to settle down with someone from the industry or someone having no connections with the industry? "Such decisions can't be pre-planned or predicted. Destiny will take its course there."
Has Indian Idol changed him as a person. "I don't think so. My favorite dish still is dal and rice" he quips.
Any other endorsements other than Airtel. "None for now. I was offered to do an advertisement for a bank, but I refused it."
Earlier most aspirants wanted to become a Sonu Nigam or Udit Narayan. Today they want to become an Abhijeet Sawant. "That is just a fad and is short lived. I do not let myself get carried away by that. Tomorrow when another artist comes on the scene, they will want to become like him. So its okay", he says wisely.
And finally what would his message be to the Indian Idol aspirants for the next year. "I would only like to tell them to work hard, because hard work will never go unnoticed. And formal training in music is necessary if they are serious about making a career in the music industry. You should always be well prepared."
