The Vigil Idiot: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

After playing a fun-loving 20-something who comes of age after falling in love in Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), and playing a fun-loving 20-something who comes of age after falling in love in Wake Up S!d (2009), and then playing a fun-loving 20-something who comes of age after falling in love in Rockstar (2011), Ranbir Kapoor is back as Bunny in director Ayan Mukerji's latest to play a - get this - fun-loving 20-something who comes of age after falling in love. Yeah, I'd be lying to you if I said this is something you've never seen before. Although, going by how little the audience has to take away from the movie after watching it, I'm pretty sure no one involved in making it has mastered the genre yet.

She wears numbered glasses. By the customary Bollywood definition, she's a wimp, a plain duckling on the cusp of turning into a swan. And until that makeover happens, you wait patiently for this modern-day Eliza Dolittle to rise, shimmy and shine. After that — phew! — all's fine.

The heroine of Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, is in fact, two movies for the price of one. And just in case that isn't sufficient, Ms Madhuri Dixit shows up to perform an item number, set in a studio-made red-light area, which looks as faux as her smiles, wider than the Howrah Bridge. The Dixit boogie's done and over with for an aperitif. Next, the screenplay takes off to for a major length to Manali for a fun-filled trek which may or may not remind you of the vintage Nasir Husain balloon-festooned picnics.
