Backatge pass: The Begum Of Lucknowi couture

Backatge pass: The Begum Of Lucknowi couture
Payal Saluja, the costume designer of Dedh Ishqiya
Film: Dedh Ishqiya

How would an aging coquette reigning over a surreal town nestled between nawabi nazakat and modern malice dress? When Payal Saluja, the costume designer of Dedh Ishqiya was first introduced to Begum Para -- Madhuri Dixit's character in the film--the dichotomy intrigued and flummoxed her.

She spent the next three months trawling the lanes of Lucknow, Mahmudabad and Delhi for the answer and now it was director Abhishek Chaubey's turn to be puzzled.

Who wouldn't be, when confronted with monikers like Toriphula and Zehermora. For the uninitiated, these are the old names for colours popularly known as yellow and teal and for a director who jokes that men, like animals, only see black and white, they proved a mouthful.

"Abhishek is not easy to please and the clothes had to reflect the Begum, who is haughty, bashful and a tease at the same time. So it was definitely a challenge" says Payal.

So, we have Madhuri wearing a chikan anarkali in shades of champagne and gold in a romantic scene while her wedding outfit, which is also the costliest ensemble in the wardrobe, is a mix of green, beige and red to signify an unconventional bride.

Instead of the fishtail silhouette of the ghararas (pleated and gathered at the knees) which is a favourite with filmi Begums, Madhuri sports the more authentic farshi shararas (a voluminous lehenga with a middle part) in the film. Then there is the jhoomar which is the begum's constant companion and the necklace which plays a significant part in the plot, all crafted by the jewellers of Old Delhi.

Madhuri's last remembered turn as Chandramukhi, the lovelorn courtesan of Devdas, came more than a decade ago. But Chandramukhi and Begum Para seem to have similar sartorial tastes.

"You will see a totally different Madhuri, actually you will not see Madhuri, just Begum," says Payal, brushing off the observation. And how much did the exquisite wardrobe cost?

Though Payal refuses to talk numbers, she is all praise for the generous makers and their deep pockets. After all, the Dhak Dhak girl's return should be 'priceless'!

Madhuri Dixit's DEDH ISHQIYA to surpass Vidya Balan's ISHQIYA!

Released in 2010, the Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan starrer, ISHQIYA, had surprised many with its good box-office performance by netting 14 crore in the first week, and ending up in the 22 -23 crore range. A stand out feature of ISHQIYA was Vidya's class act, which had given even actors of the caliber of Naseer and Arshad, some stiff competition, by matching them step-for-step.

Coming to its sequel, DEDH ISHQIYA, we have news from trade and exhibition circuit and a few lucky ones who were privy to witness a song promo and a lengthy sequence from the film, had only good things to say about it.
The two female leads, Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi, garnered much praise and it appears that both these actors are indeed complementing the Naseer-Arshad pair and (just like Vidya) giving them a tough competition.

In fact, Madhuri Dixit (in particular!) seems to be in peak form, and it appears that DEDH ISHQIYA will indeed take a good start at the ticket window, much better than ISHQIYA which will be followed by GULAB GANG, marking her grand comeback on the silver screen.

Madhuri plays games

She has always been tech savvy. Be it social networking or handling gizmos, Madhuri has always kept herself updated. But when she bought herself a new mobile phone recently, she found herself struggling to understand some of its features and a few in-built games.
Apparently, that's when co-star Arshad Warsi came to her rescue. On the sets of Dedh Ishqiya, Arshad was seen having a long conversation and helping his super star leading lady getting a hang of the gadget. "Arshad has introduced me to mobile gaming. Apart from being totally hooked to it, I also feel that it's a great stress buster," revealed Madhuri.
Currently the entire industry is waiting to see her performance in Dedh Ishqiya. Those who have had a privileged viewing have said that Madhuri has delivered a career-best performance in the film. πŸ‘
