Bollywood's most iconic Villains in 100 years
Bollywood's most iconic villains in 100 years
What's a film without a villain? And what's a villain if you can't remember his name...

There are villains and then there are some characters that leave a lasting impression on your mind for their negativity. They are the most hated and without them a good Hindi film is incomplete. The dirtier the dialogues, the more real they get. They are the most cruel human beings in our Bollywood films and the struggle between good and evil, make our Bollywood films feel successful and unforgettable.

As Indian cinema completes 100 years, here is a look at Bollywood's most iconic villains in 100 years.

Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh in Sholay
The list undoubtedly has to start with Gabbar Singh, the biggest of all the bad man in Bollywood. Amjad Khan who played Gabbar contributed immensely to the blockbuster success of Sholay. In fact never in his career after Sholay could he recreate the image that the character of Gabbar Singh created.

Incidentally he was not the initial choice for the role. Ramesh Sippy had chosen Danny but Danny couldn't spare dates as he was busy shooting for Dharmatma in Afghanistan. When somebody suggested Amjad Khan for the role, writer Javed Akhtar didn't approve of him saying his voice was too meek for the role. But when the film released Gabbar Singh became the most loved (or hated) villain of all times.

Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Shakaal in Shaan
Post Sholay, Ramesh Sippy tried making another multi-starrer on the same lines Shaan. And like Sholay, Shaan to had a menacing villain. But unlike Gabbar, Shakaal was a sophisticated baddie and had all the gizmos and gadgets in his den. His den was also decked with a sleek water tank behind which had sharks swimming and underground ponds which had crocodile hungry for human flesh.

Surprisingly while Sholay was a blockbuster hit, Shaan flopped badly. But one person that everyone might still remember even today from Shaan is its villain Shakaal. Kulbhushan Kharbanda excelled in his bald man act as Shakaal.

Amrish Puri as Mogambo in Mr. India
Speak about Amrish Puri and the first character that strikes your mind is that of the invincible Mogambo. The one common element connecting Gabbar, Shakaal and Mogambo was writer Javed Akhtar. With changing times, Javed Akhtar wanted to portray an international villain who wants to rule the world.

Mogambo had a costume, a stick, a throne and a group of loyalists who would jump in acid water on his one call. And then he would show-off his happiness saying "Mogambo Khush Hua". Till the last award function that the late Amrish Puri attended, whenever he made an appearance on the stage he would made it a point to raise his cap and say "Mogambo Khush Hua".

Pran as Gajendra in Ram Aur Shyam
Pran who played the role of Gajendra, the cruel brother-in-law in Ram Aur Shyam with such perfection that it brought a change. After his successful villainous portrayal even the villain's role started getting as much importance than that of the hero's. His mere presence on screen evoked anger among the audience's to the extent of abusing him. Famous for his trademark sneer, the talented actor was often paid more than the lead actors of his films at the peak of his career.

Pran played all his villainous characters with ease whether it was a rustic villager or a city-bred fraudster. And soon his name itself became a synonym for criminal tendencies and became terror personified on screen. He stands out in public memory as the evil Gajendra from Ram and Shyam

Ajit as Loin in Kalicharan
Ajit as Loin immortalized the Suave villain with his individual style and characteristic accent in which he introduced himself "saara shahar mujhe lion ke name se jaanta hai". With his distinctive style he created the soft-spoken, super-suave killer. His role in Kalicharan earned him the sobriquet of Lion after he mispronounced the word with great abandon. The actor also portrayed one of the most popular villainous character Teja whose golden wig, night gowns and of course Mona darling makes him memorable.

Prem Chopra-- Bobby
Main woh bala hoon jo sheeshe se pathar ko tod deta hoon.' who can forget this intimidating dialogue which was the trademark of one of the Bollywood's biggest baddies. YES, we are talking about Prem Chopra. All the criminal activities like rape, murder, blackmailing nothing looked bad for Prem Chopra's on-screen persona. His trademark nasty smile and dialogue Prem naam hai mera... Prem Chopra was enough to convey his evil intentions and intimidate anyone.

Prem Nath - Sir Juda in Karz
He is one of those rare villains who despite of having no lines and dialogues left an remarkable effect on the audiences. Sir Judah in Karz played by Premnath, was a mute but an malevolence villains of Bollywood. He gave orders through a series of knocks and his sidekick, played by Mac Mohan, then explained it, by saying "Sir Judah kehtey hain..."

Kanhaya Lal as Sukhi Lala in Mother India
Kanhaiyalal played the sleazy landlord, who tries to take the advantage of the anguished Radha even as she begs for food for her starving children is perfectly slimy. Even without no great background music, no strange camera angles, and no histrionics, Kanhaya Lal managed to make the character of Sukhi Lala popular who was snivelling and shabby. As Bollywood films started highlighting the urban settings, the moneylender villains vanished, but Sukhi Lala, still remains a memorable baddie and an iconic one.

Ranjeet as Ranjeet
Whenever we think about Bollywood's iconic villain Ranjeet, the image that immediately comes to our mind is of a man who has a locket dangling on his bare chest and signs of lustful exploits in his eyes. He's one of the famous on-screen baddies of the '70s and '80s. Ranjeet rose to fame with the reputation of having committed a record 350 rapes — on screen. He got his real name as his character name Ranjeet in over 25 movies. Ranjeet was effective and undeniably very evil with Wicked intention in films like Amir Garib, Haath Ki Safai, Vishwatma, Dharamveer to name a few.

Danny Denzongpa as Kancha Cheena in Agneepath
Danny Denzongpa as Kancha Cheena was so convincing in every scene and right from his costume to power packed dialogues, everything just scored for the film. The self-proclaimed emperor of the underworld Kancha Cheena was one of the best played underworld don characters in Bollywood history. So impressive was Danny that the audience's still remember him for his powerful role.

Kancha Cheena, the crime baron, takes over village Mandwa where hero Vijay Dinanath Chauhan is born. Just wants to keep his business flourishing, and in order to keep all this going he conspires and kills Vijay's father. Danny's look as Kaancha Cheena is still considered as one of the most stylish villain with aviator shades on and clean gelled hair. Danny excelled in detailing every aspect of his character of Kaancha Cheena from his looks, mannerism, and dialect to the ruthlessness.

Jeevan as Robert in Amar Akbar Anthony
Jeevan was one of the top bad guys of 60s, 70s, and 80s Bollywood cinema. Popularly known as the Narad Muni of Indian Cinema, Jeevan has acted in many films but his role as Robert in Amar Akbar Anthony is something worth an applause. Jeevan as Robert Seth excelled with over the top villainy and his dialogue delivery style only elevated the performance in all his movies. Jeevan acted in almost all type of villainous roles, right from being an evil minister in a medieval film, to being an evil villager, to the urbane, sophisticated villain in a city situation in Amar Akbar Anthony.

Ashutosh Rana as Gokul Pandit in Dushman
Ashutosh Rana graduated from television to film in Dushman and his portrayal of the postman Gokul Pandit was so convincing and effective that he could scare the daylights out of the audience. The obsession in his eyes and the lust on his face gave shades of extreme negativity to Gokul Pandit.

Kajol played a double role in the film and both her roles fell prey of the lust of Gokul Pandit.

Why is Kareena Kapoor a better housewife than Vidya Balan?

Bollywood heroines' looks can be deceptive

Kareena Kapoor and Vidya Balan

It's interesting how Bollywood heroines have proved once again that their looks are only skin deep and can often be misleading. Their true essence lies below the multiple layers of make-up they pad on.

Kareena Kapoor - and this news has emerged post-marriage - loves cooking and often dishes out a storm for her family and friends.

Meanwhile, Vidya Balan's fans can be forgiven for thinking that she symbolises the perfect Indian housewife. The heroine, who found her style essence in going traditional and always dressed demurely in sarees, can't cook at all, her brother-in-law Kunaal Roy Kapur has claimed recently in Indian daily Mid-Day.

Vidya is family-oriented but she obviously missed the cooking classes somewhere along the way. Now, it is not necessary that a woman should know how to cook, but the news has evidently taken her fans by surprise.

The Kapoor girl is equally traditional in such matters of wedded bliss. After all, in this age of women's lib, she has decided to take up her husband's family name after her wedding. However, being a true blue Bollywood royal, she has decided to keep her famous family name along with her married name. She now prefers to be called Kareena Kapoor-Khan.

On this subject, Vidya too seems to be heading the same way. If the Bollywood grapevine can be believed, the 'Kahaani' star has been mulling over adding her husband's name along with her own. Fans will know for sure only once her film releases and they get to see the credits.

Meanwhile, can you think of any other Bollywood actress whose reel looks have misled you about their personalities in real life? Have your say and post your comments below.

Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan and the current generation's sweetheart Ranbir Kapoor maintain a safe distance from one another.Obviously RK Jr is 17 years younger than SRKand even addresses the senior actor as 'sir'.However, one must say that Ranbir's parents Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh (who did a cameoin Jab Tak Hai Jaan) enjoy SRK's company.Apparently, whenever Rishi and Neetu bump intoS hah Rukh — either on a flight or at a social do,they make it a point to spend sometime with the actor. They love his ready wit and have fallen prey to SRK's irresistible charm.

Aamir 'gymnast' Khan shooting in circus tent for Dhoom 3

Jigar Shah (MID-DAY; April 24, 2013)

Aamir Khan is reportedly shooting for his introduction song as well as several scenes for Dhoom 3 at Film City. As the star essays a gymnast ( a circus gymnast to be precise!) in Vijay Krishna Acharya's thriller, a circus tent has been put up for the shoot.

Says a source, "He will be indulging in trapeze and mid- air acts for the shoot. The place has been booked for good long 40 days. European dancers and performers will be performing with him in the song."

The star has also become even more leaner as preparation for the shoot.

Says a source, "Aamir is seen pumping iron around the sets. He wants to be fit as a fiddle. He has been training day in and day out for his look keeping his diet in check despite his other commitments."

Numerology-crazy SRK now insists on digits 555 & 40 even for his mobile?

Soumyadipta Banerjee (MUMBAI MIRROR; April 24, 2013)

Stars often come with the added quirks, and Shah Rukh Khan is no exception.

Much as he would like the world to think otherwise, the actor is a strong believer in numerology and the power of numbers. So much so, he insists that all things around him – at least those that have a number attached – stick to a combination of the numbers 555 and 40. Apparently, he always had a fascination for 555 but 40 is a recent addition to his list of favourites.

If sources close to Shah Rukh are to be believed, the last five digits of three of his personal mobile numbers are a mix of 555 and 40. His wife Gauri and all senior officials working with him have either or both these numerals as part of their mobile numbers. Even his closest colleague Karuna Badwal and 80 staff members have them in their official mobile numbers. His car bears the number plate 555 and his personal email id too has a combination of these digits.

In recent months, Shah Rukh has been getting increasingly finicky about the numbers' game and doesn't like to be associated with the number three or its multiples.

So is he a self-styled numerologist? "Shah Rukh is not only in touch with a reputed numerologist but also burns the midnight oil studying the science," said a source close to the actor, adding, "This is such a well-kept secret that only Shah Rukh can answer who is his numerologist." Well… an
