Part 22

Dr. Menon: Her chest is clear, but BP is quite high. I think it's over exertion only. She needs complete rest to recuperate. We'll get her sugar level also checked.

Calling out to a nurse doctor Menon asked her to check akka's sugar on the accu-check machine. The nurse who entered was Ammu, Kunjmon's sister. It was on Riddhima's recommendation that Jyoti had given Ammu a job after she completed her nursing course. She smiled at Armaan and nodded in acknowledgement. She held akka gently by her hand and took her to another room.

While akka was away Armaan asked "Doctor, do you think it's better to admit her?"

Dr: Actually she only needs rest. If that's not possible at home, you can ask Dr. Jyoti to keep her here for a few days.

Armaan knew that akka hated lying in the hospital but at home she wouldn't stay in bed. She'd always be doing something. Here Ammu would take good care of her and also keep her strictly in bed. So he decided to speak to Dr. Jyoti and find if there was a bed empty in this nursing home.

Ammu returned alongwith akka and told the doctor "it is 248."

Dr: The sugar is high too. I think we'll keep her here for a few days so that we can monitor things better.

Understanding what the doctor said akka started protesting in mixture of Tamil and Malayalam "I'm not all that sick. I'll be ok if I take medicines. I'm already feeling better." Doctor Menon smiled at her and said in a similar language "But these numbers say otherwise. Don't worry it's a question of 2-3 days only. The sooner the BP and sugar levels get to normal, the sooner I'll discharge you."

The doctor sent Ammu to check from the head nurse regarding availability of bed, while he wrote the prescription. Akka was about to argue with Armaan but he pointed with his eyes towards the doctor and indicated to her to remain quiet.

Soon Ammu was back and akka was taken to a room with 2 beds. One was already occupied and the curtain between the 2 was drawn. Akka was taken to the other bed. Akka made one last attempt to change Armaan's mind, but when he said "Akka you have to stay here if you want to get back to health quickly. If you neglect this, later you may have to spend longer periods in the hospital. Will that be ok?"

Soon another lady came and handed akka a gown asking her to change. Armaan walked outside the room, while the lady led akka to the bathroom. Armaan called Riddhima and conveyed all the matter to her. She also agreed that it would be best for akka to stay in the nursing home for a few days.

Lady: Will you be able to change on your own or should I help?

Akka: No, no I can manage.

But seeing akka unsteady, she put her arm around akka's shoulder, took her in and started undressing her. Akka also let her help, as she wasn't feeling very strong.

Akka: Are you new here? I haven't seen you before.

Lady: Yes, I joined only last week.

Akka: What's your name?

Lady: Jaya.

When akka returned to the bed, she called Armaan and said "You go home. I'm ok here. Tell Thangam I'm very sorry I left her in a lurch like that. The guests and the children, how will she manage everything? You will also go to work tomorrow."

A: Akka if you keep worrying like that, you won't get better quickly. If you want to come home soon, keep calm and take rest. I'll take leave from work and take care of everything, don't worry. I'll go and talk to Dr. Jyoti now.

Armaan spoke to Dr. Jyoti and she assured him that she'd make sure that akka took proper rest and was back to normal soon. "I have an extra hand now. She's a very caring person and a tamilian too. So akka will be comfortable with her and nurse Ammu is also known to akka. For that matter she knows everyone here."

Armaan thanked her and went to akka's room to bid her goodbye. Ammu was with her giving her an injection. When Armaan requested Ammu to take good care of akka, she assured him that she was on night duty for the next few days, so she'd take proper care of her.

A: Achcha akka, main chalta hoon. Kal subah aata hoon.

Akka: Yahan sab hai merko dekne ko. Tumko aaneko jaroorat nahi. Tum Kutti paaiyan ko sambhalo aur Thangam ka madad karo. Kal sab mehamaan log bhi nikal raha hai.

Armaan told her once again not to worry about home and that he'd manage. When he reached home, Riddhima was chasing Ani around the house and trying to feed him. The others were at the table ready to start dinner. As he entered he could hear Padma asking "Tum akeli kaisey sambhalogi? Tum kaho to main rukh jaati hoon."

S: Lekin Padma I have to go to Mumbai. Monday Sanjeevani ka board meeting hai.

Armaan walked in assuring them, "Maa, papa aap fikar mat karo. Akka do din mein ghar aa jayegi. Till then I can take off." Then turning to Riddhima he said "Tum bhi khana khalo. I'll change and come. Then I'll feed Chotu."

R: Nahi Armaan he's almost done. Tum change karke aao, we'll have dinner together.

After dinner when Riddhima went to help kaka clean the kitchen, Mini pushed both of them out saying she'd do it.

G: Chal main bhi teri help kar deta hoon.

M: You'll be more of a nuisance than help.

G: How do you know? Tell me na what to do.

As they both entered the kitchen arguing, Riddhima asked kaka to go and rest. He'd have to be up early and start his schedule as akka wasn't there to assist him. She went and joined her parents who sat chatting in the hall.

R: Kitne samajdar ho gaye hai na dono?

P: They have faced a lot of hardships in their childhood. So they have become very mature.

S: More than that, they have a special place in their heart for Armaan. He has been their savior. Had it not been for him they wouldn't have been where they are today.

Armaan had changed Ani, got him to brush but the little one wasn't willing to sleep yet. So father and son joined the others. For a change Ani was lying quietly on his dad's shoulder, his eyes drooping.

R: Where's Akshu. Let him say goodbye to all of them. He'll be in a hurry for school in the morning.

A: He's packing his school bag. He'll come.

Mini and Gappu joined them and Mini said "Actually di, if you wish I can stay back a couple of days. Anyways I was planning to go to Lonavla, to spend two days with bua and my friends, before returning to Pune. I can meet them even next weekend, no problem."

R: It's ok Mini. Pata nahin if you'll be able to get tickets after two days if you cancel this one. We'll manage. Akshat is also there to help us.

P: That's right. Akshu is a gem. Actually, since Muniamma is not here, you can discipline Ani now. She's the one who has pampered and spoilt him.

R: Maa all our fingers are not equal in length but each has its use. So also each child is different. It is said "Each child is a new thought of God."

A: Aap ki packing ho gayi? Kuch madad chahiye to batayiye.

S: We didn't bring much so nothing to pack. But we'd better go to bed now. Tomorrow we have a long drive and a flight.

P: Haan chaliye. Leking pehle Akshu se mil lete hain.

As they proceeded to Akshat's room the rest sat talking. Riddhima advised the two youngsters to concentrate on their studies and come out with flying colors. While Armaan's advice to them was to manage their personal life as well.
