The Mistress of Spices is a film that has been adapted from Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's novel. The story is an enchanting, magical and surreal fable. It tells the story of Tilo (Aishwarya Rai) and the beautiful, magical powers that she has been given. The film is a fusion of magical elements mixed with a dose of realism. This Hollywood film stars the gorgeous bollywood queen Aishwarya Rai, Dylan McDermott, Anupam Kher, Nitin Ganatra, Sonny Gill Dulay, Padma Laksmi and Ayesha Dharker. The film has been directed by debutante Paul Mayeda and has been produced by Gurinder Chadha.

Tilo is a simple girl who has been blessed with the ability to look into people's past and their future. It is this very power that uproots her from her homeland and she is forced to come to America and live as the Mistress of Spices. She lives in Oakland, California and runs a small store of spices called 'Spice Bazaar'. It is here that Tilo mixes her magic portions of different spices to help all her customers with their problems. Tilo has always obeyed the spices and done everything to help make others lives better. But for the spices to work their magic on her customers lives Tilo has to follow some ground rules, she must use the spices only to help others, she must never have any physical contact with any other human and she must only love and live for the spices.

Tilo is a young lonely girl and tries her best to adapt in this culturally different country. Just when she is managing to adjust, a handsome man called Doug comes into her life like an unprecedented storm. Doug has a small accident outside Tilo's spice store and thus Tilo meets the man of her dreams. Both are drawn to each other but each also has their own little secrets. Doug wants to be with Tilo and asks her to go out with him. Tilo too is attracted to this handsome stranger about whom she knows nothing. Doug has awakened so many deep desires within her that had been buried with time. But Tilo has been forbidden to fall in love, so she tries to resist Doug but ultimately she is touched by Doug's charm and warmth. Tilo decides to throw caution to the wind and embarks on a journey of friendship with Doug.

But as Tilo grows closer to Doug, the Spices start to misbehave and all the people that Tilo has helped are affected. The Spices are now punishing her for turning away from them. Tilo does not want to hurt anybody; all she wants to do is be with the man of her dreams. Will Tilo obey the spices and give up the only man that she has loved? Will Tilo sacrifice the lives of her friends and all the people she has helped? Will Tilo relinquish the rights of this beautiful magical gift for the gift of love? Can Tilo manage to hold on to both the things that are extremely close to her heart or will she have to choose only one?

Aishwarya as the enchanting Tilo has that beautiful ethereal quality that is required for the Mistress of Spices. Ash is first shown as a simple girl and later on, she has a more glamorous and appealing look. This is Ash's second Hollywood film after Bride and Prejudice. She will also be seen in Hollywood films Provoked and The Last Legion. The Mistress of Spices will release on April 28.
