PART-6 UNEXPECTED

Khushi sat there in the darkness, with her phone tucked away behind her, fearing the approaching footsteps. Shyam's face appeared in the darkness, lit by a candle, looking unnaturally eerie. "Khushiji, if you are scared, know that I am here for you," he told her smirking. Khushi, gave disgusted grimace.
"Arey, Khushiji! Why are you sitting so uncomfortably? Come, sit with me," he said tauntingly, setting the candle aside and settling on a chair that seemed to have appered out of nowhere.
Khushi flushed in anger. "HOW do you think you will get away with this? Sooner or later, they will realize at Shantivan that I am missing."
"Poor, innocent and naive Khushiji... I had stopped on the way to inform at Shantivan that you went to Buaji 's place because your Amma called and I Told them that the flight has been cancelled. So-"
Khushi cut him off. "Don't you think, JIJAJI that through Jiji or someone, it will soon come to light that I am missing from both the houses?"
"Ah, don't worry Khushiji. By then, we will be long gone and somewhere far far away"
'We'? Khushi thought. Fear gripped her when she deciphered the meaning of what he meant.
"When I Tell Arnavji-" She stopped as Shyam leane towards her from his chair, evil and lust glinting in his eyes. "Saale saab is in London, and by the time he is here, it would all be over.".
He looked at his watch and smiled. "Maaf keejiyega Khushiji. Bank, humaara matlab, Rani Sahiba hamaara intezaar kar rahi hogi." Then he leaned closer to her, making her flinch."Aap ghabraiyyega mat. Hum jaldi aenge." He chuckled sinisterly and left the way he came, leaving Khushi alone. She began to cry. Hey Devi Maiyya... What was happening with her? Was this it? She had to go away with that SNAKE, leaving behind hate in the eyes of man she loved? Why was- Her thoughts stopped abruptly. 'The man she loved'... She indeed DID Love him afterall didn't she? And him? She saw nothing but anger and hate for her in his eyes...No. Now that she thought about it, she realized that there was something hiddn behind his hatred. Memories revisited her.
*"Tumhari sagayi ho gayi, aur tumne mujhe abtaana zaroori nahi samjha?"... "Farq padta hai dammit!"... "Tumhari nus cut jaati toh?"... "Jo main karunga, woh tum karogi?"... Their almost-kiss on Diwali...A vague memory fom Holi stirred but died almost immediately; but she knew it had been a beautiful moment...The day when she had sat on the temple threshold, when Buaji had sent her away after their marriage... And at the airport when he leaned toward her to stop the flow of people between them...And when she was about to jump off of the building, his desperation to stop her...* She could go on and on, but didn't want to...It hurt too much...She smiled bitterly at life's irony and slowly had a hysteric fit. He loved her too; tears brimmed her eyes as she thought, "Hum jaante hain woh humse pyaar karte hain," she told herself. Then imagining him to be infront of her, she said,"Aapko jo samajhna hai, samajh leejiye. Hume koi farq nahi padta." Then she told
herself sadly, "Hum bhi unse bahut pyaar karte hain." She loved him and she didn't want to let go of him. Right now, she had no choice... she began to grope about in the darkness and finally found what she needed.

At Shantivan-
Anjali stood at the staircase, unsure about what to do when she saw Chhotey and Payalji fighting. She could hear them conversing, but was it the right time to interrupt? As she wondered what to do, Payalji made the decision for her; Payal's eyes widened in shock, and Chhotey turned around few seconds later. Both stood frozen to the spot.
"Di, I was just asking Payal-"
Anjali nodded her head. "Don't lie to me Chhotey." Anjali knew she could avoid this conversation, but she also jnew it was time to sort things out...She knew the conversation would hurt her, but she had to have this conversation for the sake of her Chhotey. And for the woman he loved, but suppressed those feelings inside him with all his might. Her little, egoistic, Chhotey... He had always thought that his Di was fragile... Well, she was not... She took his hand, and asked Payal to follow her. The trio went to Anjali's room. Arnav sat next to his Di and Payal took a chair. "What's the matter Di?" Arnav asked warily.
Anjali breathed deeply. "Hume sab sach batao Chhotey..."
Arnav felt ripped. He knew his fragile Di wouldn't be able to bear it... "Aur jhoot bolne ki sochna bhi mat Chhotey," Anjali warned him.
Arnav flinched with guilt and looked at Di, trying to convey through his eyes that he couldn't tell. Anjali pursed her lips. "Payalji, aap bataaiyye... Khushiji hoti toh hume bata deti, per woh toh-" She stopped and sighed. "Payalji, aapko Khushiji ki kasam."
Payal's face looked torn. Arnav looked at Payal, a warning in his eyes. "Hum...woh..." Payal stuttered.
Anjaki frowned. "Arey haan... Hum toh bhool hi gaye the ki aapko bhi nahi pata." Both Arnav and Payal looked at Anjali. She turned to Arnav. "Sach toh sirf Chhotey aur Khushiji ko pata hai! Aur Khushiji yahaan nahi hai... Tum batao Chhotey, aur sach batao."
"Di? Kaisa sach?" Arnav asked... He really didn't know what Di was talking about. He tried to remember what it was that no one except he and Khushi knew, but failed to remember.
"Hum aakpe aur Khushiji ki shaadi ke baare mein baat kar rahe the Chhotey. Aapke shaadi ke sach ke baare mein."
Arnav stared at his Di in disbelief. Anjali looked at Payal, whose eyes were moist with angry tears. "Woh? Di, maine aur Khushi ne... Maine Khushi ko..." Arnav started, unable to finish.
"Inhone Khushi ko dhamki di," Payal finished for him. She added angrily, "Ye keh ke ki agar Khushi inse shaadi nahi karegi, toh woh HAMAARA aur AKASH ka rishta tod denge."
Anjali displayed no emotion, but underneath, she felt a wave of pity and sadness for Khushi and felt cross with Arnav for not giving Khushi a chance to speak. Something snapped inside Arnav. "Di, maine yeh aapke liye kiya tha! 6 mahinon mein aapki delivery tak ki baat thi aur haan, maine Khushi ko dhamki di thi ki usko 6 mahinon tak meri patni ban ke rehna hoga aur contract ke according-" Anjali groaned, "Hey Bhagvan!" and Payal yelled at him, "6 mahinon tak?" She said incredulously, "Arnavji, aap shaadi ko koi khel samajhke baithe hai kya?!" Arnav hit himself mentally when he rememebered that they didn't know about the contract. "Di, woh main-"
"Contract? Chhotey, ye business nahi hai! Zindagi hai! Tum jaante bhi ho tumne Khushiji ko kitna hurt kiya...? Yehi baat toh hamaare samajh mein nahi aati thi... Dekhne mein tum dono khush the, per Khushiji ki aankhon mein ek ajeeb sa dar aur dard tha... Jaise ki unhe kuchh samajh mein nahi aa raha... Aur surprise...woh kitni surprise hoti thi jab tum unse acche se baat karte... Ab hamaari samajh mein aa raha hai... Hum yakeen nahi kar paaye jab tum Khushiji ko uss raat ghar ke aaye aur woh kisi ko jawab nahi de rahi thi... It all makes sense now! Kyun Chhotey? Kyun itna hurt kiya tumne unko?"
Payal was crying silently. Arnav told her softly. "Aapke liye Di."
"Humse ek baar poochh liya hota?"
"Di, aapko pura sach nahi pata... Maine ye sab aapki bacchi aur aapke shaadi ko todne se bachaane ke liya kiya tha!"
"Nahi Chhotey. Hum pura sach jaante hain... Aur jahan hamari shaadi ki sawaal hai, woh toh pehle hi toot chuki." Arnav and Payal looked at her feeling dazed. Did she know even know what she was talking about?
Anjali did not notice,. She just went on. "Haan, hume dukh hua tha...lekin ab hum itne kamzorenahi hai Chhotey. Humne nahi bataya ki hum jante hai... Kisi ko nahi... Inke liye hume chuo rahna pada.." She lovingly held her belly, "Hum apni RajKumari se uske Papa ko kaise chheen sakte the? Aur waise bhi Chhote, hume koi farq nahi padta. aaj jo hua, uske baad mai apni rajkumari uske Pita se door hi rakhna chahungi... Sachme Chhotey, hume koi farq nahi padta..." She stopped to look at Arnav, who felt as if he had been electrocuted. A stor emotions drowned his heart. He asked in a choked voice. " Di, aap janti thi?"
Anjali smiled sadly... "Haan Chhote."
She leaned to hug him and hit a glass of water, which fell to the floor, scattering across. "Oh God! This is a bad omen!"
"Hum Hari Prakash ko bula laate hain." Payal sniffled.

PRECAP- She was tired of lying... That she didn't care... Ki use Koi farq nahi padta... Farq padta tha, padta hai, aur hamesha padega... She knew without him, she was incomplete...Her ego never let her believe that... No more lies... She looked around, making sure he wasn't there, she closed her eyes, and in a swift movement, brought down the shard of glass down on her wrist. A sick pain spread through her hand, as she felt a warm and silkily wet touch spurt onto her hand...
