Rajesh Khanna knew that his time had come

Rajesh Khanna's cancer was diagnosed a year and a half ago. In this period, Akshay Kumar had a key role to play. Having lost his own father to cancer a few years ago, Akki reached out to his pa-in-law like a true son. He ensured that every member of the family rallied around the ex-superstar, the yesteryear icon. We've learnt from sources that RK, who was battling the dreaded disease, wanted to live it up to the very end.

A recluse by nature, his last days were made happy by his older daughter Twinkle. Often she and her father would have lunch together at her residence. Akki even got the family to celebrate RK's birthday (December 29) in Goa last year.

Besides the family, two others who were a constant by Kaka's bedside were his old aide Balakrishna, who is addressed by everyone as 'Balaji' and also Anju Mahendroo, who made it a point to keep Dimple company by Kaka's bedside. Anju and Dimple kept vigil by rotation. Twenty days ago Kaka realised that his battle for life was a lost cause.

He told his family, "The medications are not working. I know my time has come." His last wish was to have a grand funeral. And the family ensured that he left his residence like an emperor on a flower decked truck followed all the way to the crematorium by the Police, the fans, the media and a heart-broken industry. Such was the impact of the illness that Kaka had become physically frail in his last days, honestly even his spirit was broken, but we still say —Anand mara nahin. True legends don't die.

At 10.15 am yesterday, India's first superstar's funeral procession left from his home Aashirwad. Rajesh Khanna was laid in a transparent casket in a vehicle adorned with white flowers. Dimple Kapadia and the family stood by the casket. Family and thousands of fans bid adieu to Indian cinema's king of romance, as his grandson Aarav lit the pyre. Anju Mahendroo stood by Dimple's side all through at the crematorium. The condolence meet will be held on Saturday.

she was with him for his money🥱I guess RK too sensed it and thus the patching up with his wife in front of the media. And if she was just his friend then she has no claim in his property.

Reminds me of the famous Nina Wong of Honkong. She was the richest woman alive in Asia and when she died she left assets running into thousands of crores.

And despite being such a shrewd businesswoman, she had actually not left a will!

The dispute over her property and other assets continued for years and years, till the court finally took a stand on it!

The battle for her property and wealth was one of the ugliest in Hongkong's history, with so much of slandering and personal secrets tumbling out on a daily basis. Nina was painted as such a trollop and not one person in her family was spared!

Coming to Rajesh Khanna, even if hasn't left a proper will, I think everything will go to Dimple Kapadia, cause she is still his legal wife...even though estranged, they never formalized their divorced. Indian Property law is pretty straightforward this way...everything goes to the wife and children. Live-in relationship's aren't even recognized under our law! Especially not, if the wife and children are still around!

@Poppy: You are right about the Indian laws. Thats why as per a news item I read today Anita Advani has sent a notice to ensure she isnt evicted from his house. @Rowdiest: Thanks for posting the article. One thing is good to know that atleast in his last few months Rajesh Khanna was always surrounded by his closest friends and family.

yah ... got to know abt it yesterday only ... i had doubt when i read Mumtaz's article that how they discussed abt their cancer treatments when she met him in June in the hospital

but now its confirmed by this article

There are conflicting reports on his health actually.

Some say that he had Cancer while others talk about his liver failure...due to excessive drinking. Some reports say that the family did not talk openly about the reason of RK's death, because they did not want to tarnish his image...because his death was due to his alcoholism.

According to some old magazines, when Rajesh and Dimple got seperated, the rumors doing the round were that it was mostly due to his alcohol addiction which happened because of his inability to handle the failure of his films.

Speaking to PTI in London, Mumtaz said she was "crying the whole morning", but was happy that she had met the ailing Khanna - 'Kaka' to his fans - in Mumbai last month, when the two discussed their respective battles with cancer.
