[ Thank you Tinoo for your brilliant explanations and "voice over" messages. We learnt much about Indian culture and tradition. Now we better understand the position of women in your society.

Unfortunatelly it is not the case only in India. Women in many societies are underestimated and humiliated. Their role is reduced to the role of housewife, mother, wife, daughter in law ... Everyone has the right to demand anything from her, only she has no right to ask anything for herself. She suffer much, working hardly sometimes even without one big THANKS for her sacrifice. But, time bring changes... who knows, sometime these chnanges does not mean any improvment of women's life, it means more obligations and more works, as she always will remains hausewife, mother and all elase...

Hi Gocilija:
I really want to appreciate what you have written -- that time brings changes, but sometimes these changes does not mean any improvement of women's life, at times it means more obligations and more work ... yes, sometimes, instead of progressive changes, there are many regressive changes. This is so true!!
I want to clarify that this is not the case for all women in Indian society -- we are talking only about the particular rural village communities which are portrayed in balika vadhu --in the urban city bred communities in India, women have many rights and are very vocal about exercising them -- and parents too are very keen on girls education and girls working and being economically independent as well as having their own identity. Unfortunately, within India, there is a large urban-rural divide and many disparities in the position of women. So in the villages girls education still suffers and girls are still in secondary positions.
I dont feel comfortable commenting on social structures, because I myself am not Indian, but have lived in India for 20 years, so have studied the language and am acquainted with the way of life ... but am not equipped to give in-depth commentary on many social aspects, because at times it still seems alien to me, even after spending time here ... I feel like an "outsider looking in"... so please dont base your perceptions of overall Indian society based on any of my translations per se ... because I do not have the perception of "insider" looking out.

hi guys -- yesterday there was lot of confusion because of lack of clarity what was said in the precap.

Today, the longer scene clarified it.
Tomorrow will be the 'baithak' for bhago -- this is more of a prayer ceremony.
Then after that anandi and her father will go alone to haredwar (holy city) to scatter bhago's ashes in the Ganga (holy river). They will make a sort of pilgrimage.
Then, after one year, it is hindu tradition to have the annual memorial (called barsi)... and in this one year between now and the barsi, no happy events or celebrations of any kind can take place in the family.
But khajan says that they will not mourn bhago for one year, he will hold the barsi within 15 days... and after that, they will be free to have happy events again -- the primary event being anandi's remarriage, because he says that he wants bhago's last wish to be fulfilled as soon as possible -- otherwise her soul will know no peace. Only if she is married will bhago's soul be peaceful.
Anandi refuses for this initially -- she tells khajan "I dont think we should change rituals and traditions -- Please dont think that I will change my mind. I will still marry shiv after one year. I will keep my promise to my mom"
But Khajan says to anandi "No, anandi, it has to happen now, we will not wait for one year."
Dadisa and Bhairon are shocked because this breaking of tradition (of not keeping one year mourning is unthinkable)... but dadisa is very pleased that khajan has gone ahead of her, and she says that as soon as they get back to Jaitsar, she will call the priest and set a date for the wedding. đŸ„ł
(In the scene afterwards, shiv phones anandi and asks anandi if he can come with them on the religious trip to scatter bhago's ashes, but anandi says no, she wants private time with her father, and wants to be alone with him.)
While he is talking to her, a man comes and offers jalebi (sweets) because of good news in his family. Shiv decides to have the jalebi ... but before putting it in his mouth... he remembers how anandi had refused his jalebis when he had gone to the school... saying she doesnt like jalebis anymore and will never eat them (because it reminds her of jagya, he used to give them to her).
so he puts down jalebi and says to himself "I will only eat jalebi after anandi resumes eating jalebis. I will wait for her to eat jalebis again".
