Muddled story Inside Man Cast: Clive Owen, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, Willem Dafoe Director: Spike Lee Showing at: E-square, Fame Adlabs, Inox Inside Man opens with a startlingly familiar track. A R Rahman's chhaiyan chhaiyan overlays the credits as New York scenes rush by, building up to a bank heist, and you think, oops, a sound mixing mistake. Two minutes more, the score swells louder, and then you know. This is a Spike Lee movie, and his films speak in tongues. The robbery takes place in a Wall Street branch of a respected bank. Dalton Russell (Owen) heads a team which takes over the bank, and holds the customers captive at gunpoint. In-faint-disgrace detective Keith Frazier (Washington) and his partner arrive on the scene to negotiate the safe release of the hostages. Soon though, something about how Russell is reacting to the situation as well as to power lady Madeline White's (Foster) overtures, makes Frazier suspicious. This is not one of Lee's sharply critical Blacks-are-also-people films. Inside Man gives you people and actions and twisted motivations and a dark secret buried in the bank's vaults. The film makes digs at the expense of its characters. Washington has a white superior who doesn't do racism, but boss-ism; he also has a girlfriend whose brother is a lowlife creep. He loves the girl, not the brother, and he doesn't know quite how to say it. Nothing in Lee's world is black or white: everyone has an agenda, and everyone muddles along—the bank robbers, the cops and the negotiators. Even though it drags its feet here and there, Inside Man is smart and funny, both on account of its delicious cast, and a story which lets you do some thinking.

Walter D. Asmus directs Samuel Beckett's own English version of his play. Austin Pendelton (Oh Dad, Poor Dad..., The Diary of Anne Frank) assumes the role of Estragon for this BAM Theater Company production. 1979 Liv Ullmann won't be forgotten as she headlines at the Majestic Theatre in I Remember Mama. The Richard Rodgers-Martin Charnin musical with book by Thomas Meehan is directed by Cy Feuer. It will play 40 previews and 108 performances before closing Sep. 2. 1984 John Malkovich and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago bring Lanford Wilson's Balm in Gilead to New York City at the Circle Repertory. Terry Kinney, Tanya Berezin, Gary Sinise and Glenne Headly star in the play set in a Broadway coffee shop under the direction of Malkovich. 1998 Natalie Portman, making her stage debut as the star of the Broadway revival of The Diary of Anne Frank, leaves the production at the Music Box Theatre to return to her movie career and be immortalized as Princess Leia's mother in the Star Wars "prequel" films. Natalie Paulding replaces her as Anne. 2002 Performances begin in London for Bombay Dreams, the musical set in the world of Indian cinema. The composer is A.R. Rahman and the producer is Andrew Lloyd Webber.

2003 The Light in the Piazza,, a new musical by Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel, makes its world premiere at Seattle's Intiman Theatre. It will open on Broadway in spring 2005 and win Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Actress in a Musical. http://www.playbill.com/news/article/69919.html
