TV stars€™ reel ad-vantage

Navya Malini, TNN Feb 20, 2013, 12.00AM IST
(Rashami Desai in an ad with…)

Ram Kapoor, Sakshi Tanwar, Shweta Tiwari, Hina Khan, Rashami Desai €" TV's current superstars are now emerging as favourites in the celeb endorsement space too. Only this time around their ad appearances seem to be banking heavily on their screen characters and not the individual actor's real persona.

Of course, this is not the first time that a TV character has made an overwhelming impact on the consumer. From Smriti Irani, Hussain Kuwajerwala and Juhi Parmar to Hiten Tejwani-Gauri Pradhan Tejwani and Avika Gor €" TV stars had their share of glam moments in the ad space following their telly characters' popularity.

Explaining the popularity of TV characters, producer Sudhir Sharma says, "TV actors get into the audiences' hearts via their characters. Character recall plays an important role because audiences emotionally connect to the characters." Producer Rajan Shahi offers his perspective. "Advertisers prefer popular TV characters who strike an instant connect with the consumer to endorse their brands, instead of depending on their star power." Seconds Sharma, "It takes a lot of time for TV stars to build their brand identity. TV actors become popular because of the characters they play."

Adman Prahlad Kakkar agrees on the popularity quotient of the TV stars, unlike Bollywood which relies more on the star power. He says, "Bollywood actors are bigger than the characters they play, barring exceptions like Amjad Khan, who was remembered as Gabbar Singh. But TV stars don't enjoy that kind of popularity. That's why it works better for brands to use their television image in ads. It also gives them the liberty to do away from establishing what a character in an ad signifies."

So, how much brand value does a TV star really bring in when he/she endorses a product? Producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary says, "TV shows run for years and the character gets etched in the viewers' minds. A TV star needs to consistently deliver to achieve an individual brand equity." Actress Adaa Khan gives credit to her ad space visibility to her telly stint. "It's because of TV that I am doing ads."

By the looks of it, reel characters of TV's biggest stars, overshadow their real brand equity .

TV stars on International Women's Day
Happy Women's Day
Women's Day is round the corners and our small screen actors are too excited to share their views on Women's Day. Here we go...

Rupali Ganguly: I don't believe in these days dedicating in a year like Mother's Day, Father's Day, Women's Day etc, especially after the recent cases of Molestation happening in the country. It's very sad to hear that Females are not safe at her own place. The Only way to change this crime is to educate girls not only from School but also there has to be a change in Women's thinking. The system has to be very strong. It will take time but Parents should start respecting their own daughters. Early marriage, feticide etc. should have to be stop. If a woman will change herself then only she will be able to change the world.

Small screen€™s kid stars take exam fever head-on

Amrita Mulchandani, TNN Mar 7, 2013, 12.00AM IST
(Avika Gor )

It's that time of the year when most young adults have to sweat it out and do their best at the final exams. Television's child actors are also literally on their toes, doing a fine juggling act between shooting, attending coaching classes and appearing for exams. Time management is not easy, but these youngsters are not letting the exam pressure bog them and are busy preparing for the exams in between shots as and when needed.

While Avika Gor (Sasural Simar Ka) and Avinash Mukherjee (Sanskaar...) are preparing for their Class X board exams; others like Ashnoor Kaur (Jai Jag Janani Maa Durga), Bhavesh Balchandani (Veera), Sparsh Khanchandani (Parvarrish), Ahsaas Channa (Devon Ke Dev Mahadev), Bhavya Gandhi and Kush Shah (Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah) are all appearing for their annual examinations too.

" With so many kid stars on a short break due to exams, producers have to plan major overhauling of the storylines which can impact the show. How do they cope with such situations? "It becomes difficult for us sometimes, but since we are informed about the exams in advance we prepare accordingly. We change scripts according to the artists' availability and include other tracks. The kids are also very bright and they manage their time efficiently. We have arranged for special study corners on the sets," says producer Deeya Singh of Parvarrish €" Kuchh Khatti Kuchh Meethi.

It might be busy time for these children, but the show must go on, and so it does.

Rupali, the noble soul

Stuti Agarwal, TNN Mar 15, 2013, 11.59AM IST
(Rupali Ganguly )

Rupali Ganguly, who plays Pinky Ahuja in Parvarrish - Kuchh Khattee Kuchh Meethi, is a noble soul. And the person she has married €" Ashwin Verma €" is equally so.

Did you know that if the couple ever ate a five-star restaurant, they keep the same amount of money corresponding to the bill, to distribute among the poor and deprived. "That ways we don't suffer from guilt. However, five-stars have no fascination for me. I am equally happy eating a vada pav from a roadside stall.

The opportunity came recently when hubby Ashwin took her out to dine out in JW Marriot in Mumbai just before the Valentine's Day. The couple had a hush-hush wedding on February 6 this year. "The whole first week of marriage, there would be one unexpected gift €"sari, jewellery, roses, chocolates €" waiting for me. I also love the fact that Ashwin is compassionate takes care of stray dogs, just like me," she said.
