Thank you for sharing knowledge about Navratri days :) Can you answer my question? I heard reading durga saptshloki is as effective as reading durga saptashati..is this true?

Lakshmi Puja is another Bengali festival that is celebrated in every household. Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth is worshipped just after Durga Puja. Lakshmi is one of the daughters of Durga who symbolizes wealth, peace and prosperity. On a full moon night people worship her at their homes and pray for her bessings. All the rites performed during the Lakshmi Puja are followed with utmost care and

The Lakshmi Puja time schedule is also maintained well by the devoted. Delicious Bengali Recipes on Lakshmi Puja night are cooked and are then given to Goddess Laxmi as an offering. It is considered that Goddess Lakshmi visits homes of the devotees and replenishes them with wealth.

The Myth

Goddess Lakshmi is generally represented as a beautiful golden woman, usually sitting or standing on a lotus, her symbol. She is also known as 'Sri' and attained importance as the consort of Vishnu.

Goddess Lakshmi has generally been thought to have existed first as the daughter of the sage Bhrigu and to have taken refuge in the ocean of milk during a period when the gods were exiled from their kingdom as a result of a rishi's curse. She was reborn during the churning of the milk ocean as Lakshmi, one of the fourteen precious things. The Goddess of Wealth, emerged from the ocean forth fully grown
and radiant, bearing a lotus in her hand. Goddess Lakshmi was then married to Vishnu and has a clear share in Vishnu's activities as preserver, and this reinforces her earlier character as goddess of fortune and giver of wealth.

Lakshmi Puja in Kolkata is celebrated both by the Bengali community and the non-Bengali community. The Bengalis celebrate Lakshmi on the full moon day that succeeds Maha Dashami. Maha Dashami marks the end of the Durga Puja. Goddess Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, prosperity and peace. It is basically meant for housewives, who pray for the well being of their family but nowadays Lakshmi Pujas are also done in Pandals. On most occasions, the public Lakshmi pujas are done in the pandal, which was previously used for Durga Puja. The non-Bengali community conducts Lakshmi puja during the diwalis.

Description of the Idol of Goddess Lakshmi

The idol of Goddess Lakshmi is painted yellow and has four hands. She is draped either in 'Daker Shaj' ora sari and crown. She holds a lotus in one of her hands, a vermilion case in one hand, the ripe wheat flowers one another hand. Her bearer is the white owl.

Lakshmi Puja in Bengali Homes

The priest conducts the Puja and at times, the housewife herself conducts the rituals. The Ouja take place in the evening or night nut within the specified time span. The homes are decorated with 'Alpana'. The white color of the alpana is made from ground rice and water. Small, face to face 'S' shapes are drawn all over the homes to symbolize the footprints of the goddess. In some homes, symbols are used instead of idols. The symbolic representatives includes ripe wheat and containers or painted mud plates. The priest performs rituals and ararti. The unique feature is that they unlike other Indian pujas no musical instruments are played. Only the shell is sounded.

Debi & Urmi

Thanks for the elaborate descriptions.

I dunno whether this is the right thread for questions, but I'll ask it here, since it's otherwise a bit idle - which is the Bong literary source that has Ma Lakshmi as Ma Durga's daughter?  In other words, she & Ma Saraswati are Mahadev's daughters?

The most often cited description of Lakshmi's origins are in Kurma avatar, where she is one of those who's brought up by the Samudra Manthan, and marries Vishnu.  The other source I've read about is her being the daughter of Rishi Bhrigu.  In case of Saraswati, she was created by Brahma, and it's debated as to whether she's Brahma's wife or not (given that Saraswati images in Durga Puja have her wearing sindoor, she's regarded as Brahma's wife here).

So do the Bengali sources that have Durga as the mother of Lakshmi & Saraswati (is it Krittivas, btw?) deny that Lakshmi emerged during the Samudra Manthan, or that Saraswati was created by Brahma in a manner analogous to Eve being created from Adam?

Finally, thanks for populating this thread w/ full descriptions of all the days of the puja - would be a good one to re-open every year around Durga Puja.

Oh, and wish everybody who's celebrating it today a very happy Lakshmi Puja.

P.S.  One thing I wonder - for the Durga visarjan, they immerse all the 5 statues, but Lakshmi puja follows less than a week later.  So why not have two visarjans - the first after Durga puja of Durga, Kartik, Ganesh and Saraswati, and after Lakshmi puja, do the Lakshmi visarjan❓

Aradhana, Actually we are not so familiar with the names- 'Durga Saptasahi' or 'Durga SaptaShati' in Bengal.  I tried to find the info by searching the net and LOL! What did I find!  That 'Durga ShaptaShahi' is actually 'Shri Shri Chandi'/ 'Devi Mahatmya', a text of 700 verses, which is read in each and every puja mandap during Durga Puja, only we call it with some other name! πŸ˜Š

Sapta Shloki with meaning:

Some sites do have the opinion that reading these 7 shlokas with devotion can get us the same result as we get from reading the whole text of Durga ShaptaShahi. Only this much info I can give you right now. Later, if I come across some person having the knowledge about the same, will definitely  mention about that to you.

@ Vrish, again, Thanks for encouraging words! Loved you participation here.  πŸ˜Š

Very True! We can have such Threads to celebrate the various festivals! ⭐️  And yes, it can be re-opened, good Idea! πŸ‘πŸΌ

LOL! About the visarjan of Ma Lakhsmi Murti, I guess that is the tradition, don't have any 'logical' answer right now.

Now about your qs about Ma Lakshmi and Ma Sarawasati- I have also thought about the same when I came to know that Ma Saraswati is considered the wife of Brahmaji in north India. I was surprised. That was a new info to me also that time. Yes, in the same way, there is the confusion  about Ma Lakshmi's origin... Right now, I cannot add anything more to it, there must be some Source of this info, will try to find the answer and come back to you soon.

About Aaradhana's qs and Vrish's qs- if any other member/s have any info/ details- please share it with us here.

Lots of Best Wishes for all! πŸ€—  πŸ€—

Now about a chief feature of Lashmipuja- the beautiful concept of 'Kojaagari', (which I missed while posting info about Lakshmipuja in page 3 ),  from Parina's Post ('Sharad Purnima' Thread) –

Also known as 'Kojaagari Punam,' the festival is celebrated on Aso sud 15 - Purnima. Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth moves around in the night sky, asking 'Ko jaagarti' searching for people below who are 'awake'. In Sanskrit, 'Ko jaagarti' means, ' Who is awake?' And to those who are awake she gifts wealth.
