Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor starrer Mausam opened to houses ranging from good to very good across India. While multiplexes recorded collections between 50% and 100%, the attendance in single screen cinemas was quite dull.
Mausam has cost Rs. 42 crore (excluding Shahid Kapoor's complete remuneration). The sale of satellite rights has fetched around Rs. 12-13 crore; music rights must have fetched another Rs. 5 crore; this leaves Rs. 24-25 crore to be recovered from Indian and overseas theatrical business to break even.
While the film may just about cover its cost and possibly yield part commission to its distributors, Shahid Kapoor may not be lucky enough to get his balance remuneration because the film will not prove to be a profitable proposal beyond fetching part commission. In any case, Shahid Kapoor and his director-dad Pankaj Kapur own 50% of the negative of the film. The balance 50% is held by producers Eros International and Sheetal Talwar equally.
When a promising film hits cinema screens, expectations soar. And when the film marks the directorial debut of a thespian like Pankaj Kapur, expectations are even higher. Although Mausam failed to charm the audience on its opening day, the three-day weekend collections are expected to cross the Rs 20-crore mark. After a mixed response on from across the country, Mausam almost touched Rs 7 cr net box office collections (NBOC) on its first day.
In Mumbai, Day Two opened with better numbers than on opening day. Ramesh Sippy of BRA Enterprises says, "Mausam opened to a mixed response from the audience and earned Rs 6.5 crore on its first day. The numbers are expected to improve over the weekend and the three-day collections are expected to be Rs 21-22 crore."
However, Delhi was a different story. Sanjay Ghai of Mukta Arts reveals, "Mausam collected Rs 1.65 crore in the Delhi-UP circuit. The film is generating a positive response from the audience. The weekend is expected to close at Rs 25 crore."
In Punjab, Dharam Pal of Paramount Pictures reveals, "Mausam's response was very good on its opening day and will pick up further over the weekend. The film collected Rs 70 lakh in the East Punjab circuit, whereas Speedy Singhs collected Rs 10 lakh on its first day." He refused to comment on the all-India figures but concluded, "Mausam is defiantly going to pick up and will do well at the ticket counter."
However, In Mysore, Mausam failed to match audience expectations. B H Basha of Bahar Enterprises elaborates, "The opening of Mausam was not up to the mark. It collected Rs 30 lakh in the Mysore circuit. Its all-India collections on its first day were about Rs 7 crore. Weekend numbers are expected to improve as the film is gaining momentum at the ticket counter. The weekend might just wrap up at Rs 25 crore NBOC."
In West Bengal, Mausam did not rain in the moolah but fared decent. Arun Mehra of Aum Moviez says, "Mausam improved considerably today from Friday's numbers. There is a 25 to 30 per cent jump in collections. The first day collections for the West Bengal circuit are around Rs 25 lakh."
In Orissa, Mausam was the only film that has released after Bodyguard. Even though Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (MBKD) released after Bodyguard, not many small centers opted for screen MBKD as they stuck with Bodyguard. Expectations were high from Mausam but the film failed to make an impact on the audience.
"For Mausam, Saturday collections are much better than they were on Friday. The film collected Rs 8 lakh on its opening day in the circuit. But it will only make an impact in big centers like Bhubaneswar, and overall Orissa collections will drop," feels Jeetu Khandelwal of Movie Pioneers.
