Johnny Depp to star in next Wes Anderson film

Wes Anderson films are notorious for relying upon an elite club of actors, and Johnny Depp is about to join them: According to theHollywood Reporter, Depp has been cast in Anderson's next film, "The Grand Budapest Hotel."

He may be joined by Anderson's regulars, which include Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and the actor without whom no Wes Anderson film is complete — Bill Murray — though the rest of the casting hasn't been set. The film will be Anderson's first time shooting in Europe, but no other details about plot or Depp's character have been released.

"The Grand Budapest Hotel" will go into production soon, and if you're feeling a bit of deja vu, you aren't the only one: It will be Anderson's second hotel-titled film. Anderson's film "The Darjeeling Limited," another travelogue, came with a short called "Hotel Chevalier," starring Natalie Portman and Jason Schwartzman as lovers who reunite in a Paris hotel.

It seems like a good move for Depp, and one that will allow him to get some of his hipster cred back. In recent years, he has become a human cartoon character in his popular roles as Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter — which, when you think about it, are all sort of the same character, but with different hats. Working with Anderson could bring back the Depp of yesteryear, who did films that did not come withpromotional Happy Meal toys.

Johnny Depp Teams Up with Damien Echols at Toronto Film Festival

Johnny Depp
waved to fans, looking calm and casual as he made his way down the red carpet last week at the Toronto International Film Festival

It could have been just another premiere – another work obligation, another red carpet – for the actor, except he wasn't promoting himself or even a movie he worked on.

By his side: someone who is not a celebrity, but has been thrust into the spotlight nonetheless. In the same week PEOPLE printed a first-look at his new memoir, Life After Death, Damien Echols, one third of the so-called West Memphis Three, stood beside Depp at the Canadian premiere of the Amy Berg-directed documentary, West of Memphis, which Echols produced with his wife, Lorri Davis, about the the 1993 murder case

"We sat next to each other and watched the whole thing because he wanted to watch it from beginning to end just to see what the crowd's reaction was going to be and what parts they reacted to the most," Echols, 37, who was released from death row last August after 18 years of incarceration, told PEOPLE after the screening. "It was pretty amazing."

When the prosecutor would talk about their guilt in the documentary, he said, "There were people sitting behind us saying, 'F--- you' to the screen. It was just what we were hoping."

Adds Echols: "Everybody loves Johnny, so he just thought if he could come and bring more attention to the movie by being there, then that's what he would do."

But Echols himself almost didn't make it to the event – entering Canada with a murder record proved to be a challenge. "I had to go through extraordinary measures that others don't," he told The Hollywood Reporter

A Permanent Mark

Depp's dedication to Echols's cause began in the years following the 1994 conviction of Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley in the brutal murders of three 8-year-old Cub Scouts. (The West Memphis Three were released from jail following a sticky "Alford" plea bargain that allowed them to maintain their innocence while pleading guilty.)

Now, Echols and Depp have another permanent reminder of their bond.

After they finished the second day on the media circuit, a Toronto tattoo artist was called to Depp's hotel room to ink matching black crows on the back of the duo's right hands; it's the fourth tattoo they've gotten together. (Also inked: songwriter Bill Carter, who wrote a score for the documentary.)

The art is a nod to the 1994 movie The Crow about a man who is murdered, but comes back to life. It's a theme Echols says he explores in his book, where the story of his life after death row unravels.

"[In the movie], they talk about the mythology of how [the crow] is considered to be something that transports souls from the realm of the dead to the realm of the living," Echols tells PEOPLE. "When somebody comes back to life, it's the crow that brings them back to the living."

Ride 'em Johnny: Shirtless Depp shows his saddle skills atop a horse in Lone Ranger

Johnny Depp wrangled his trusty steed while shooting scenes in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Dressed as the character Tonto, the actor was seen riding a horse in full costume, baring his toned arms while shirtless.

Depp shot while aside co-star Armie Hammer, who plays the lead in the new Lone Ranger film.

Brave: The actor looked confident as he straddled the towering animal

Depp, 47, looked confident as he straddled the towering animal. The scene appeared to show Tonto mounting his horse before charging off.

The film will follow the adventures of a masked ex-Texas Ranger who is aided by his Native American companion Tonto to fight injustice in the American Old West.

Shooting on the film started in February in New Mexico, and is set to wrap at the end of September.

Pensive: Johnny says Tonto is a multi dimensional character

Bonding: The actors prepare for the scene

The Lone Ranger first appeared in 1933 in a wildly popular radio show which spawned an equally popular television show that ran from 1949 to 1957, as well as comic books and movies.

Depp has previously revealed he has Native American heritage.

He said: 'My great-grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. Makes sense in terms of coming from Kentucky, which is rife with Cherokee and Creek.'

The actor recently revealed why he wants to play Tonto, saying he aims 'to mess around with the stereotype of the American Indian that has been laid out through history, or the history of cinema at the very least especially Tonto as the sidekick.'

There were two previous attempts at Lone Ranger films in 1981 and a TV movie in 2003, but they weren't received as well as expected by fans.

The film has been a long time coming; Columbia Pictures and Classic Media announced their intention to make a Lone Ranger film in 2002.

After years stuck in development, Disney announced in 2008 they had cast Depp to play Tonto.

The film is expected to be released in 2013.

Yee-haw! Armie Hammer looks rather skilled as he does his own stunts

Johnny Depp to launch publishing imprint after 18 literary films

In "The Rum Diary," based on Hunter S. Thompson's novel, Johnny Depp (above, driving, with Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Rispoli) plays an itinerant journalist who leaves New York to write for a newspaper in Puerto Rico, where he drinks heavily and gets mixed up with a beautiful woman.(Peter Mountain / Film District / October 16, 2012)

October 16, 2012, 9:16 a.m.

Johnny Depp will launch a publishing imprint with Harper, a division of HarperCollins, called Infinitum Nihil. That's the same as his production company, which has had a hand in the films "The Rum Diary" (adapted from the novel by Hunter S. Thompson), "Hugo" (adapted from the children's book by Brian Selznick), and "Dark Shadows" and "The Lone Ranger," both film remakes of old television shows.

Since graduating from "21 Jump Street," Depp has chosen roles that are a mixture of pop culture and literary adaptations. Here's his book-based ouevre:

"What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (1993). Adapted from the novel by Peter Hedges.

"Ed Wood" (1994), partially based on "Nightmare of Ecstasy," a biography by Rudolph Grey.

"Donnie Brasco" (1997), based on the memoir "Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia" by Joseph D. Pistone and Richard Woodley.

"The Brave" (1997), based on the novel by Gregory MacDonald (author of the Fletch mysteries).

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (1998), based on the book by Hunter S. Thompson.

"The Ninth Gate" (1999), based on the novel "El Club Dumas" by Arturo Perez-Reverte, in which Depp played a rare book dealer.

"Sleepy Hollow" (1999), based on the story by Washington Irving.

"Before Night Falls" (2000), based on the memoir of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas.

"Chocolat" (2000), based on the novel by Joanne Harris.

"Blow" (2001), based on the biography by Bruce Porter.

"From Hell" (2001), based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell.

"Secret Window" (2004), a thriller about a novelist, based on a Stephen King story that appears in his collection "Four Past Midnight."

"Finding Neverland" (2004), based on the life of "Peter Pan" author J.M. Barrie.

"The Libertine" (2004), based on the life of 17th century poet John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), based on the children's book by Roald Dahl.

"Public Enemies" (2009), partially based on Bryan Burrough's history "Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34."

"Alice in Wonderland" (2010), based on the books by Lewis Carroll.

"The Rum Diary" (2011), based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson.

Now Depp can make books themselves, in addition to movies based on books. He's announced the first two books to be published by Infinitum Nihil: "The Unraveled Tales of Bob Dylan" by Doug Brinkley and "House of Earth," an unpublished novel by folk singer Woody Guthrie.

In a statement, Depp said, "I pledge, on behalf of Infinitum Nihil, that we will do our best to deliver publications worthy of peoples' time, of peoples' concern. Publications that might ordinarily never have breached the parapet. For this dream realized, we would like to salute HarperCollins for their faith in us and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship together."

At the red carpet, when asked about the PCAs coming to India, Salman Khan said, "It's happening for the first time, right? It's about time. It should have begun long time ago. Many people would have gotten a lot of awards. It's People's Choice. It's online, right? If I have to give someone an award, I will give it to someone who has no interest in awards. Like Aamir (Khan). I am not here to accept any awards. I am here to watch the awards function, and later to perform in it."

The digital presence of People's Choice Awards India is managed by Bulldog Media & Entertainment. When we asked Akash Sharma, co-founder and managing director of Bulldog, about the Favourite Movie Actor winner, he remained tight-lipped. "Johnny Depp has truly been the People's Choice of the US show for the past many years.

And rest assured, the people worldwide have spoken and chosen a Bollywood star with as much love and affection. In the US, last year we received over 230 million votes from fans globally. In India too, we have received millions of votes for the first year itself. What's interesting is that PCAs India nominees have overall received almost 49 per cent response from fans outside of India, including countries like US, UK and Canada."
