Madhuri cheers for bahlJuly 25, 2011 12:23:37 AM
At a time when fashionistas and socialites were jostling to get hold of the front row seats, she walked in and stole the show.
Looking drop-dead gorgeous in an off-white voluminous ensemble, actress Madhuri Dixit left the guests stunned as soon as she entered escorted by FDCI president Sunil Sethi. It was Sethi's idea to bring the diva at the opening show of the Delhi Couture Week. "Who could have added more oomph than Madhuri to represent the grandeur and royalty that couture stands for," Sethi was heard telling his friends from the fashion fraternity, who kept walking up to him restlessly, asking for reasons for the hour-long delay in Varun Bahl's show.
Bahl's collection made for just about the right choice for the beginning of couture week. The collection was inspired by the Victorian era and emphasised on puffed sleeves, structured shoulders and well-constructed silhouettes. The collection not just stood apart for the unique pairing of Victorian velvet Jackets with raised collars, quilted sleeves with saris and lehengas, but was also appreciated for its soothing bridal shades like peach and cream. The embroidery on lehengas was done mostly with bronze, copper and other metallic threads. Swarovski crystals encrusted on the embroidery also added sheen to the collection.
Another interesting part of the collection was mojri-style velvet jootis that were paired tastefully with saris, anarkalis, long jackets and lehengas. Most jackets used laces and volumes at the back. The designer, like most of the other times, didn't speak anything about his collection and just smiled for the compliments that he received. But more than the appreciation for his collection, Varun was visibly happy that Madhuri could come down for his show and liked his creations. "I just loved everything. The collection is just the kind I like — very chic and traditional," said Madhuri.
