She readies to go take a shower, the house quietens down the 11 and 9 year old are asleep, since they left home early this morning, Sonali is making a list of things she needs before she gets to Mumbai. Not for school, fashion accessories, clothes, shoes and such! Khanak will be funding most of it. For now the man upstairs is creating an alternate reality for her. A reality where Kaka's Doc visits, Kaki's Xrays and home repairs and Sonali's registration fee and Dadi's hip replacement surgery do not feature.

The "reality" albeit shortlived is about being considered desirable, intelligent, allowing her to be flirtatious, frivolous, flaky and childish. He will coax her to let her guard down, pull her out of her shell, encourage her to talk, just listen or plainly observe her, totally fascinated by everything she does.

Fa, his cousin, and Aada are in her parents room next door, the women and kids are laying down in the living room, snack making halted temporarily.

The women were awake chatting about life and times until most of them fell asleep, the men didn't talk much anyway so were happy to be in a room with a cooler.

Bai and Aada were awake, not believing Khanak's good fortune. Tossing and turning, too excited to believe all this was happening for real.

Bai wondered if Khanak filled more water in the cooler in her room, did she take a bottle of cold water for Shaan? Does he take naps? Smiles to herself when her thoughts drift. Her immediate thought that follows is grand babies.

Returns 20 or so minutes later face cleanly scrubbed, looking fresh as dew. Shivers when the cold cooler air hits her.

Finds a bindi on the Godrej mirror that matches and centers it between her brow and smiles at her reflection, and before the smiles goes away, checks to see if he is looking, he is, he sets his laptop exactly at the spot she set it before lunch and walks up to her.
