8:30 AM

Vapi-Surat

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi

Kaki: Khanak nashta khaayegi? (the guy is serving)

Khanak: Nahi Kaki, sirf chai (checks her purse for chaptsick, her lips are dry)

Leans back on the seat, eyes shut again, Kaki nudges her with tea, the kids are in the back, listening to music on their MP3 players. She smiled, thinking of Sunil's parting words " Bus hamare ghar mein ek cheez ki kami hai woh May 30^th ko poori ho jaayegi"😳👏

Dadi had told her "I bringing some serious dance moves for your sangeet" She had laughed out loud. The trip to the station was uneventful.  The clear roads and the cool morning breeze was putting her to sleep. Ritu and Kaki were asleep 10 minutes into the ride. Mehul was listening to music and Mitali was watching a video on the TV at the back of the seat

Shaan: Are you mad at me?

Khanak: Nahi!

Shaan: Are you sure?

Khanak: Ram told me they might be letting go of one of the architects after the score card review came out pretty bad. Are they doing the "low end" Certosas?

Shaan: you want to talk about work? Khanak?

Khanak: I don't want to fight! (looking out the window) Agar aap nahi aana chahte sangeet par to nahi aayiye. Shaadi par aane ki koshish keejiye

Shaan: Khanak.

Khanak: Mujhe aapse koi baat nahi karni.

Shaan: Mujhe call karo phir!

Khanak: if I do then I want you to call also.

Shaan: (pulling the edge of the red string on her left wrist) Mom said you were totally "outspoken yet extremely quiet"!

Khanak: thanks

Shaan: What color did you pick out? (for the wedding dress)

Khanak: You will have to come see it!

Shaan: Oh! I am just curious to know if it has too many hooks or strings (softly)

Khanak: Not at all! It has a self destruct button! (husky)

He laughs out loud!

She knows he is looking at her, her ears and cheek burn but she continues staring at the TV.

Shaan: Mom said you didn't even tell her! She said you narrowed down three but would not tell her (smiles)

Khanak: I want you to call me for every time I call you (adamant abt her side of the deal) (staring at the TV screen in front playing)

He smiles in response.

Shaan: Will you take me to your school, and walk me around your neighborhood?

Khanak: Ummm... its not very fancy actually, I used to walk to my school.

Shaan: It would be good to see! (tugging hard at the edge of the red string)

Khanak: (gently pulling her hand away) Hmm

Shaan: And I want to make love to you in the room you grew up in (barely audible)

If she were a block of ice, she just melted and formed a puddle

Khanak: Good to know!(trembling, gloriously aroused) (barely audible also). Email me a list, I will see which ones are doable!

He laughs throatily.

Shaan: that one tops my list actually!

His phone rings, he takes the call

Hangs up they are approaching the station.

Shaan:  Do you need more money? Strictly a loan ofcourse (careful)

Smiling "Not really! Thanks! Ritu is too protective" (embarrassed)

Shaan: Not a problem!

He knew she would murder him if he arranged for air tickets or cabs or anything.

He treaded carefully on that path!

Shaan: Do you want to switch to Certosa?

Khanak: I don't know, Ram thinks it would be a good idea. Gosh! I have so much to do! I am taking three weeks off! (shocked)

Shaan: The homes will still be around (reassuring)

Khanak: I love my work.

Shaan: Good! I do too! (firm, setting a small foundation for battles later)

Pause!

Kaki: Are we there yet? (in Gujarati)

Khanak: in 10 minutes Kaki (in Gujju)

Shaan: Are they inviting Sooraj's family?

Khanak looks up at him in shock, he holds her gaze. Hers show worry, grief and embarrassment. His are curious yet clear.

Khanak: I don't know!

The driver turns into the station. Their trance is broken.

They all get off, the driver corners a porter down, the luggage is all loaded.

Pradeep: Main gaadi park karke aata hoon sir!

Shaan: haan!

Pradeep: Achha ! (holds joined in prayer, smiles at her)

Khanak: Aap shaadi mein nahi aayenge?

Pradeep: Aaaoonga, family ke saath, Sir ke ek din  baad.

Khanak: achha (smiles happily) zaroor. Aap ke liye rehne ka saara arrangement Aada kar chuke hain

Pradeep is overjoyed

Shaan is bored "Chalen Khanak?"

Khanak: Hmmm..

They walk inside.

Shaan: khanak, its awful here! Sorry!

Khanak: you don't have to apologize, not take a train if you don't wish to (cool, aloof)

It does not affect her at all.

Shaan:Its so crowded, do you know how to get to your train? (confused staring at the thousands sitting standing or lounging or asleep on the floor)

Khanak: yep, platform number 6!

Shaan: (walking briskly by her) Oh! Wow! (shakes his head, rubs his nose)

Khanak: you should have gone to your work (not irritated but just plain honest)

Shaan: I wouldn't have known what it looks like then (shocked, honest)

Khanak: Yep! (continues walking, her Kaki and the kids are a few steps behind)

Climb up the overhead walk way and step down'''. There is a  look of shock and  discomfort writ all over his face

He finds the coach/car. Asks for her tickets, verifies it, returns

Their stuff gets loaded, he pays the porter

Khanak: its ridiculous! You paid him Rs500? (appalled)

Shaan: yep! (smug, uncaring)

Kaki is seated, wants water, she steps down with Shaan she buys water, he buys half a dozen periodicals for her.

Khanak: Ranbir Kapoor! On the cover? Bhayya mujhe Filmfare de do, Stardust nahi (gushes)😆😉

Shaan looks at her like "Really? Ranbir Kapoor?"😲

Khanak: Hes cute!😳

Shaan: get over him! I am cuter!

Khanak: Nope!

He doesn't go overboard buying stuff for the cousins. He is not very expressive that way.

She buys them gum and some snacks.

Its 6:20 AM

Shaan: I have a meeting at 7 at the Site.

Khanak: oh! You must be late?

Shaan: Its alright! (holds her stuff while she boards, hands it to her and they exchange a look)

They pause and stare at each other.

Khanak: So,  I will see you at the wedding? (biting her lower lip to hide a smile)

Shaan: And afterwards! 😳(husky)

The whistle blows and the steel serpent gently shakes itself out of its reverie and slowly glides forward. She stands by the door and watches him walk away hands tucked in his pockets!
