SYNOPSIS
RANG DE BASANTI is a story about the youth of India today.
A young, London based film-maker chances upon the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police force in India during the freedom struggle. Excited about these memoirs, she makes plans to shoot a film on the Indian revolutionaries mentioned in the diaries. She comes down to Delhi, and casts a group of five friends to play the pivotal roles of these revolutionaries.
However,products of moders India, the 5 youngsters intially refuse to be part of the project, as they don't identify with these characters from the past. Not surprising, considering that they're part of a generation of Indians that believes in consumerism. To them issues like patriotism and giving one's life for one's beliefs is the stuff stuffy text- books are made of. They would rather party than be patriots.
In the filmboth the 1930's British India and the India today run parallel and intersect with each other at crucial points. As the film reaches its resolution the line between past asn the presents blur's as they become on in spirit.

Aamir Khan As D.J

Alice Patten As Sue
Sue is a seeker. SHe is seeking some sort of truth that has eluded her until now. A film maker by profession, she is on a journey of self discovery. Her grandfather's diaries, and the passages on the Indian revolutionaries therein, has touched something deep within her. Through the fire and passion in the words within the diray, she has found the missing piece in her. While researching and grappling with this material, Sue has become and Indophile. She ends up traveling to india on her mission: to make the documentary on these Indian revolutionaries. A lone girl in an alien land, she is driven. Knowing deep within, that she is embarking on a journey that will be life altering.

Siddharth As Karan
Karan SInghania was born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. Quiet,charming and with deep piercing eyes, that echo his intense nature, Karan is a loner. Atul Kulkarni As Laxman
Society sees Laxman Pandey as an extremist. He sees himself as a man fighting to retain the Indian-ness of things in a world that's increasingly obsessesed with all things Western. He embodies that half of India that is resisting surrendering India's core values at the altar of comsumerism. In his fight against what he ses as Western decandence, Laxman Pandey is not averse to using violence as a means to achieve his ends. Politics then, is his platform, and he has reachd the highest rung of the ruling party;s youth wing in Delhi. Unlike his colleagues however, money cannot shake him for his ideals . He is a true believer.

Sharman Joshi As Sukhi
Sukhi is where the heart of the group lies. The group, needless to say, is always rooting for him. What makes him loveable is that he makes no pretences about the way he is. Athletic, and always sporting a million-dollar smile, Sukhi is a Jat from Haryana. He speaks in a typical Haryanvi accent and has no qualms admitting he's not comfortable with English. He's hyperactive, talkative and has a rustic sense of humour, that vindicates him. And endears him to everyone.

Soha Ali Khan As Sonia
Sonia has a chronic case of die-hard optimisn. If her sunny disposition didn;t make people feel deeply welcome, it would almost be tiresome. A traditional Indian beauty with a gace tha would inspire poets and painters alike, Sonia, is both well traveled and well read. Always a hit with both sexes, she tends to hang out with the boys who consider her to "one of the guys". The love of her life is Flt.Lt.Ajay Rathod, ans she claims to be more important to him than the planes he flies- no mean achievement considering his passion for flying. Soani is an idealist, who feels passionately about issues. She is someone you can rely on when the chips are down.

Kunal Kapoor As Aslam
Aslam's dilemma is the one most prevalent in the minorities of India: Fighting the voices of dissent in his orthodox Muslim fmaily. Tall and handsome, Aslam has sensitive eyes and a heart to match. A product of the new generation, coupled with the fact that he nurses the heart of a poet, Aslam is beyond barriers of religion. A point that often brings him into confrontation with his orthodox family who oppose his free wheeling lifstyle. Feeling increasingly claustrophobic in these surroundings, Aslam spends most of his time out of home with his 4 friends. All of whom form his surrogate family.

Ajay is Sonia's better half, and the love of her life. Whenever he's in town,the fun quotient seems to rise considerably.
