Part 8
When Maan came into the room with the medicines he could feel the palpable tension in the room. He felt as if everyone was looking at him with varying degrees of apprehension and concern and he loathed it. Brushing aside the irritation that swept through him, he sat next to Geet on the bed and gathered her resisting form into his arms. He closed his eyes and sighed contently, he finally had his Geet in his arms and now nobody dare even think separating her from him. He would fight the entire world and protect her, if it comes to that! He inhaled deeply, taking in her scent and filling his soul with it. It seemed to fill some void within him and he did not think much about how stiff she sat within his embrace. She must be shy and awkward in front of Dadima, he thought and chuckled to himself. But now that she was with him, it was time to keep her forever next to him and then there would be nothing for her to feel embarrassed about.
Geet looked wide-eyed at Dadima and Vicky when Maan took her in his arms. She almost fought him but was stopped by the pleading look on Dadima's face. Somehow in this very short while she had come to respect and adore Savitri Devi Khurana and if there was anything she could do to help the warm, old lady, she would do it, even if it meant sitting in the confines of a stranger's arms. She tried relaxing herself slightly but when she felt him breathing her in, his hard chest brushed against her back and she stiffened once more. She could not deny the warmth and passion in those arms that surrounded her protectively; instead, she was surprised by it. But the surprise soon turned into shock and a dull fear settled in her stomach when she heard his words.
"Marry me", demanded Maan, tightening his hold around Geet.
"What? No way!", Geet retorted immediately, glaring at him with blazing eyes and refusing to be cowed down by his intensely passionate eyes and hold.
Dadima and Pinky looked at each other stunned. Although Vicky had told them how Geet can be the only cure for Maan and that he would need her constant help in his treatment plan for Maan, they had not even had a fleeting thought of such a situation to arise. But then Maan thought he was madly in love with Geet and had been searching for her crazily for the past 2 years. And when finally he found her, he was surely not going to let her go away from him! Dadima looked at the way Maan was gazing at Geet and felt slightly scared. His eyes were darkly intense and filled with a strange edge. He was looking at her as if he owned her and she was his. She could also see the glint of anger at her refusal that was clouding his eyes and darkening them even more. Dadima looked from the stubborn set of his jaw to the defiant look on Geet's face, who was now glaring at him with her chin high, unwilling to be browbeaten into submission by his will. Dadima knew Maan would finally have his way but she was pleasantly surprised by the fact that there was finally one person in the whole wide world, after her that is, who stood up to Maan unflinchingly. A thoughtful expression occupied her face as she looked on interestingly at the battle of will between Maan and Geet.
"Kya? Kya kaha tumne?" Maan thought for a moment that he had heard her wrong. Was she refusing him? HIM.. Maan Singh Khuarana? Nobody and nobody ever refused Maan Singh Khurana and this petite slip of a girl was turning down his proposal! As anger rose within him, a strange sense of excitement and passion too coursed through him. He gazed at her with a glint in his eyes as a slow smile started to form on his face. Of course she would dare to stand against him! She was no ordinary girl.. this was Geet.. Maan ki Geet! And she had to be someone utterly different and amazingly special. Maybe it was this spirit in her that had captivated him long ago and made him fall head over heels for her, he thought with a smug smile. Life would never be boring with her! He held her tighter when she tried to struggle out of his grip and he realized the little spitfire was arousing him. Her curvaceous body that was twisting in his arms and her fiery temper caused desire to slam into him so suddenly that he momentarily loosened his hold around her to suppress his muffled groan. If only Dadima and the others were not in here he would teach her what it means to defy Maan Singh Khurana and his arousal climbed higher at the thought of how he would make her submit to his wishes. No.. life is never going to be boring with her!
Completely unaware of Maan's emotions shifting from rage to desire, Geet continued trying to pry herself out of his arms and when she finally pulled away she looked at him triumphantly and sat next to Dadima and Pinky on the couch. She was inwardly gloating at her victory, oblivious to the fact that she had freed herself only because he had been distracted by utterly unholy thoughts about her. But she was still fuming at how he had abruptly asked.. no, she corrected herself, demanded that she marry him!
"Huh! What does this man think of himself! Delhi ka sartaj badshah! Lekin mein bhi Geet Handa hoon" she muttered in a low voice, unaware that Dadima had heard her and was silently sniggering to herself. Oh Geet would be perfect for her hot-headed grandson!!
Before Maan could utter another word, Dadima intervened. "Maan hume Geet se akele mein baath karni hai". 4 pairs of curious eyes turned towards her but she knew she was doing the right thing and not just for curing Maan. Maan wanted to protest but he caught the stubborn look that was characteristic of the Khuranas on her face and relented. He threw a warning look at Geet and stomped out of the room, closely followed by Adi, Pinky and Vicky.
"Geet beta" Dadima began slowly after a few minutes. "Hum aapse kuch maangna chahte hai. Kya aap hume woh de sakte hai?"
"Jee? Mere paas kya ho sakta hai jo aap ko chahiye?" Geet was confused what Dadima might want from her. She was an orphan and had just enough savings to buy a couple of nice sets of salwar suits for herself twice a year and get some chocolates and play things for the kids in her Home.
"Geet, hum aapse aapka haath maang rahe hai. Maan ke liye"
Geet knew in a corner of her heart that Dadima might ask her this but still she was stunned when she heard it aloud. Maan asking her to marry him was different since he thought they were in love. But Dadima asking for the same thing, when she knew the whole truth, confused her.
"Lekin Dadima.." she quickly trailed off and looked at her expectantly, "mein aapko dadima bula sakti hoon na? Aapko bura to nahi lagega na?" Dadima cupped her cheek lovingly and smiled serenely. "Hume tab bura lagega jab aap hume dadima na bulate hai"
Geet's eyes filled with tears at the overwhelming love in her words. She was suddenly reminded of her Ma who would cup her cheeks the same way and speak lovingly whenever she was down. She hugged Dadi tightly and allowed her tears to slip from her eyes for a few seconds before she collected herself and wiped any traces of sorrow from her face.
"Dadima, aap jaante hai na. Yeh aapke pota ka sirf veham hai ki woh mujhse pyar karte hai. Then how can I get married to him?"
"Jaante hai beta. Lekin hum Maan ko teek hote hue dekhna chahte hai. Aapne suna Vicky ne kya kaha? Sirf aap Maan ko waapas lauta sakte hai. Only you can do it. Aap hume swaarthi bhi keh sakte hai lekin hum chahte hai ki aap humari bahu banker uss ghar mein aaye. And help us in curing Maan. I want you to come with us to Delhi and stay with us at Khurana Mansion. And I will not allow anyone to say anything bad about you or the Khurana family. Isiliye aapko Maan se shaadi karna padega. Hum aapse haath jod kar vinnati kar rahe hai.."
Dadima knew she was being selfish in asking Geet to get married to Maan when Geet knows nothing about him and he is only a stranger to her. But she also knew that bringing Geet into Maan's life was probably the best decision she could have made. Agreed Geet's help was needed to help Maan with his illness but if Savitri Devi had wanted, she could have taken Geet along with her and nobody would have dared point a finger at her family. But she had to trick Geet into getting married to Maan since she was the best foil for her temperamental grandson and that was the truth even if Maan was not ill and was perfectly fine. She would have still wanted someone like Geet to be Maan's jeevansaathi. Someone who will not be bull-dozed into agreeing to every little of Maan's whims and someone who can give back as good as she got! And now, this was the only way to have Geet close to Maan and her experience and wisdom told her the two will fall in love with each other, if not today but some day.
"Please Dadima, aap mujhse bade hai. Please don't fold your hands before me" Geet caught her hands and looked at her with teary eyes. "Dadima, I don't have anyone to call as my own and my very own cousin is intent on selling me for my ancestral house. Father Manchanda is a good man but I cannot be a burden on him. Mein bilkul akeli hoon iss duniya mein aur agar mere waje se ek insaan teek hosakta hai to mujhe koi aitraaz nahi hai. Mujhe yeh rishta manzoor hai"
Dadima broke out into a wide smile but before she could embrace her grand daughter-in-law, Geet interrupted swiftly. "Lekin aap ek baath ko bhool rahe hai. Aaj Maan iss shaadi keliye ready ho sakte hai lekin kal jab woh teek hojayenge tab kya? Agar tab unko yeh laga ki mein unhe ek unwanted bandan mein kaid kar rakhi hoon, to? What if he wants to separate from me then? Jab woh teek hojayenge hum unhe sab kuch batha denge and the decision will belong to him then. None of us will force him to accept me and if he doesn't want to, you will have to let me leave. Kya aapko yeh manzoor hai?"
Dadima smiled nodding her head and proceeded to hug her bahu tightly. Now I am 200% sure I made the right choice for my Maan. Lekin aapka yeh condition kabhi sach nahi hogi Geet kyunki aaj nahi to kal aap aur Maan ek doosre ko itna chahne lagenge ki aap yeh shart bhool jayenge aur Maan yeh bhool jayega ki kabhi woh aapse pyar kiya bhi nahi. Aur yeh Savitri Devi Khurana ka vaada hai.., she thought to herself.
