Khan is the family name it has nothing to do with being a male or female having it, both can have the surname Khan, it's a family name.......

But when to call a male Khan or female Khanum, it's a call name, these r two different things, a female can have Khan surname, coz this is a family name, not calling her Khan as a call name......

About what SRK said, it could be right he said it, but it could be sometimes a media made up, media is known for making stories from their own imaginations and misquote people to get attentions.........

Khan is not only in India, there r too in Pakistan and middle east as well, it's a family name, not a call name........

SRK is absolutely correct! women should use khanum instead of khan. just like the women who belong to syed family use syeda. like im a syed but my name is syeda zaara not syed zaara.  Mostly ppl don't realise this mistake thanks to their ignorance..!

SRK is an ignorant fool.  Yes, Khan is used as a title but that's true ONLY for most people belonging to Afghan and Pathan origin.  It is also used as a surname by others.  Not all Khans are pathans.  Syed is a title, yes, but NOT Khan.

For example, my name is Khan but I am not a KHAN.  Get it, Mr. Khan.  πŸ˜›

Syed isn't a title! its a surname for heaven's sake! and it doesn't matter whether khan is a surname or title, for females 'khanum' is gramatically correct!

I'm not the best with words.  However, I do know that there are Syed families, just like Sheikh.  Khanum is gramatically correct ONLY and ONLY when you are referring to someone from "Pathan" or "Afghan" origin. NOT otherwise. πŸ˜›

If you call a regular Urdu speaking person a "Khan" (how SRK referred to it) being it their surname, they'll actually take offense on being referred to as an 'akhrot'.  πŸ˜›  Mr. Khan is one, isn't he.  However, maybe he has never stepped out into the rest of the world.  πŸ˜‰πŸ˜›

p.s.  Before someone decides to take offense to 'akhrot', it just means 'walnut' and is common slang used.  πŸ˜†πŸ˜†
