Absolutely LOVED it!!!

Every single character in the movie is memorable. Yes even millimeter and I have to grudgingly include Virus and Silencer 😆

This movie is going to stay with you. Not because it is trying to leave an impact, although 'aal izz well' is not a bad idea to follow. This movie is going to stay with you because it has everything - comedy, emotion, fun, dance, mischief - everything! Every actor involved did a commendable job.

I'm going to have to disagree with some of the posters about the actors looking the age of college students. They don't. Yes, by graduation, they're 22. But when they entered college, they were only 18. None of them looked them young, but you don't realize that as you watch the movie. In fact, I didn't realize it until someone mentioned it, because they play their characters so perfectly. You have no reason to doubt their age, because they're just that convincing in the roles they play.

I'm in awe of Sharman Joshi. This guy is very good in histrionics. No one can cry like him and look convincing. Madhavan is always amazing, and this movie was no exception. I was a little bit apprehensive about Aamir Khan playing a college student, but he was perfect. Same goes with Kareena. She was great. I'm no Kareena fan, but she did perfect justice to her role.

5/5 from me. Loved it.

My Review

Ok so I had tons of expectations, naturally, Raju Hirani and Aamir Khan are a lethal combination. On top of that, having actors like Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, and Maddy were just like the cherry on top, lol
Were my esxpectations met? HELL YEAH! Hahah! I don't think I've laughed this hard in a movie that almost moved me to tears. According to me, this is 2 steps ahead of the Munnabhai series! And bow down to the Ace Khan!
The story was original and very much relevant in our lives today. If you are a student, you know exactly what the characters are going through. Some of the moments were almost too real, and it definitely made me reflect back on my decisions.
What this movie had that was missing in others movies nowadays was this GENGUINE vibe, they showed India, not places abroad with girls in bikinis and beaches and over the top glam and vulgarity. It was a very homely real movie with the right tadka of masala and fun! hug
First half is full on masti and fun with a few emotional moments, but the second half is the one with the full on hardhitting scenes!

The songs were very well situated! I loved Aal izz well and Zoobi Doobi! Zoobi doobi is prolly the cutest "romantic song" I've seen this year. Kiss

But what made this movie were the characters! Special mention to millimeter and silencer! HIS SPEECH WAS HILARIOUS! Hahaha!

Boman Hirani was flawless as usual. Made Virus come to life.
Sharman and Maddy were BRILLIANT! Just super super brilliant! I loved both of them! I cant imagine anyone else doing Farhan and Raju like them. While Maddy was great, Sharman was outstanding. HE stole the show for me in many moments in the film. He totally deserves the best supporting actor award for this movie!
Kareena was PERFECT! Hehe, just adorable! I thought that with 30 mins worth of screentime, she would get lost in there, but she so left her mark. Her dhokla scene got the MOST applause and laughs in the theater! LOVED IT! The girls' comic timing is as great as her dramatic scenes. And her confrontation scene with Boman was powerful. Now bow down to the man himself, AAMIR KHAN! No other actor comes close to this man! A 44 year old playing a 22 year old SO CONVINCINGLY??? Rancho was Aamir and Aamir was Rancho! The bright eyes, the eager smile, the innocence on his face, bravo!
Aamir has proven that he is THE BEST we have in bollywood today. A TRUE actor. Respect Ace Khan, RESPECT!
Aamir and Kareena were really cute together. Just adorable! (Pssstt, she still makes the best pair with saif though, lol!)
So all in all, BEST movie of the year for me. Very rarely is a movie promoted or publicized as what it truly is. 3 idiots did JUST THAT! What a way to end off the year!

9.5/10 👏

I totally agree with you Desu about the fact that it is rarity in Bollywood that a movie is promoted with utmost respect and honesty and it actually turns out to be good. 😆 Only Aamir khan knows how to respect his viewer's intellegence and that is why viewers always trust him! He just never disappoints, he truely is very true to his audience. He seriously deserves the title of a perfectionist. I just have fallen in love with him all over again after this movie. Aamir truely is a gem!

'3 Idiots' (Movie Review )

http://www.masala.com/17489-3-idiots-movie-review-

A tremendously entertaining piece of cinema

by Subhash K. Jha

Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani

Director: Rajkumar Hirani

By now, Aamir Khan has hit so many sixers in his career that we can only wonder what this maestro of marketing intends to do next. For sure, "3 Idiots" is yet another vehicle to showcase Aamir's sparkling ability to be part of a cinema that creates a colloquial yet classy language of thought provoking punctuation, syntax and exclamation.

"3 Idiots" is first and foremost a tremendously entertaining piece of cinema. The boys-will-have-fun atmosphere on an engineering campus is shot with the devious humour and warmth of a joke that has not lost its punch even after years of re-telling.

Some things never change in a straightjacketed society like ours. And really, when Rajkumar Hirani, with help from his co-writer Abhijat Joshi, sets down to criticise the glaring anomalies in our education system, we are compelled to wonder for a few seconds, if flogging the sacred cows of our institutionalised system of governance in cinema is not just an excuse to pull out all stops and let the young heroes have all the fun that their more disciplined counterparts deny themselves.

The thought processes underlining the film's super-vibrant but calm surface are never allowed to seep out and bubble to the exterior of the narrative. If at heart "3 Idiots" is a serious indictment of our education system, at the surface it's a character-driven film played out at an observant and opulent but always-feisty octave.

The sounds of protest against the curbs, checks and downers in our education reach out to us in a cascade of crisply-written lines spoken by characters who have lived out the nightmare that precedes that long journey into the realisation of our dreams.

At times, the narrative is savagely funny. Note the sequence where Rancho (Aamir Khan) and his girl take the critically ill old man to the hospital on a scooter. Hirani has always seen humour of mortality. He has a potent style of storytelling, a mix of street wisdom and cinematic sensitivities that come together in a noiseless tango of social comment and entertainment.

The director is strangely shy of displaying emotions. So he counters the melodrama of his third hero Raju Rastongi (Sharma Joshi)'s life with black-and-white 1960s' self-mocking background music.

Ironically, Hirani's unconventional hero Rancho often goes the other way and sheds manly tears for colleagues, friends and tormented young citizens of modern India who are crippled by a despotic disregard for their natural creativity.

Aamir undertakes his character's journey through the paradoxical labyrinth of an ambition-driven education system - incidentally the loopholes in our education was also the theme of Aamir's "Taare Zameen Par" and Hirani's "Munnabhai M.B.B.S." - with a gut-level understanding of what pains today's average 20-something.

Aamir's transformation into a 22-year-old collegian is so complete you end up wondering if he has been lying about being 40-plus in real life! Like most Aamir starrers, "3 Idiots" too is predominantly his vehicle. Most of the funniest lines and inspiring situations in the script come from Aamir. And boy, does he play the boy-man with restrained relish!

Sharman as the poor middle-class boy driven to near-suicide by his parents' ambitions gets two meaty sequences. He chews on them with careful sensitivity, leaving a lasting impression. Madhavan as the third 'idiot' expresses his smothered dreams through a series of half-expressed thoughts and a fear of unhappiness that reach his eyes without transit.

Kareena as the girl engaged to the tycoon with a penchant for putting a price tag on all his gifts, brings a dollop of sunshine and feminine grace to an otherwise masculine tale. She is so spunky and spontaneous you wish there was room for more of her. There's even less of Mona Singh who's again a spirited free soul.

The two ladies are, fortunately, part of the climax where our three heroes deliver Kareena's sister (Mona Singh)'s baby on the office table - a clear indication that even an all-boys tale has no qualms about embracing maternal responsibilities if the situation arises.

But did "3 Idiots" really need a manufactured child-delivered-in-crisis climax? Did it need those endless toilet-and-bum jokes? Couldn't Boman Irani and the new actor Omi Vaidya have been delineated less hammily?

It's not that "3 Idiots" is a flawless work of art. But it is a vital, inspiring and life-revising work of contemporary art with some heart imbued into every part.

In a country where students are driven to suicide by their impossible curriculum, "3 Idiots" provides hope. Maybe cinema can't save lives. But cinema sure can make you feel life is worth living. "3 Idiots" does just that, and much more.

'3 Idiots' finds success with critics and audiences

Film gives social message in very subtle manner

December seems to be a lucky month for Bollywood star Aamir Khan. The actor's "3 Idiots", which released on Dec 25, has got rave reviews and is going strong at the box office. It repeats the success of his previous hits - "Taare Zameen Par" and "Ghajini" that were released during the same time in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Reliance BIG Entertainment, which is the distributor of "3 Idiots", released the movie with about 2,000 prints and it has already earned about Rs.4 crore through paid previews.

"The response has been overwhelming. We had our first show on Thursday at 6 p.m. and, despite the cricket match, the occupancy was great. The film has earned approximately Rs.4 crore through paid previews," Kamal Gianchandani, head of domestic distribution of Reliance BIG Pictures, told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Aamir's directorial debut "Taare Zameen Par", released on Dec 21 in 2007, hit the jackpot. It was the story of an eight-year-old child who suffers greatly until a teacher identifies him as dyslexic and helps him.

According to reports, the film earned Rs.37 crore.

It was followed by his superhit "Ghajini". Released on Dec 25, 2008, it was an action-thriller about a rich businessman who suffers from short-term memory loss following a violent encounter in which his love interest is killed.

A remake of a Tamil film with the same name, it created history by taking over the mantle of the biggest domestic earner so far, leaving behind "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge". It earned Rs.2 billion ($41 million) in less than two weeks.

If Aamir's "Taare Zameen Par" and "Ghajini" set the cash registers ringing, his "3 Idiots" also seems to be treading the same success path.

Aamir, however, had denied any superstition about releasing his films in December.

"I hope to be third time lucky with '3 Idiots', but the release date is more of a coincidence than a planned move. I am not superstitious. 'Ghajini' was supposed to be an October release, but it had to be postponed to December because I was injured," Aamir had said before the film's release.

"3 Idiots" criticises the glaring anomalies in our education system but it doesn't become too preachy. Critics and audiences have lauded Aamir's transformation into a 22-year-old college student as well as director Rajkumar Hirani for putting forth a message in an entertaining format.

"The best thing about the film is that it gives a social message in a very subtle manner. It makes parents realise that they should never force their children as far as their profession likings are concerned. Aamir has done a great job. Even though he is above 40 years, he looks completely convincing as a 22-year-old," said Aarti Saxena, a film buff.

Said Ajitesh Raina, a student: "The film is high on humour and that's the best part. Everyone's comic timing is great. While Aamir's work is commendable, Boman Irani has also portrayed his character to the fullest."

Made by the "Munnabhai" fame director, "3 Idiots" also stars Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor and R. Madhavan. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra has reportedly spent Rs.35 crore on the film, which is doing well in big cities.

"The film is meant for metropolitan cities and that's why it is doing well in bigger cities. But in tier II and III cities the collections are not very promising. This is unlike the case with 'Ghajini', which did extremely well even in smaller cities. Let's see what happens in the smaller cities," said Joginder Mahajan, a Delhi-based distributor.

I totally agree with the article above! Cinema might not be the answer to imp issues but its not a bad medium to raise issues. I was very shocked to hear about the suicide ratios of students and I know gov has done stuff to revive the cirriculum in India many times but it was nice to hear someone raising these issues through a mass medium like hindi movies. I loved the things that they talked about in the movie, like life is not a race and there is more to education than memorizing bunch of stuff.. but its about looking beyond stuff! Its about loving what you do, enjoying it and studying stuff which you have passion for and not just because of some pressure! I think the movie was very kewl and they managed to talk about imp stuff without sounding boring and preachy (which I have always believed is trademark of Aamir movies!)
Sorry guyz I just can't stop talking about this movie.. And to all my peeps in India is Bhendi?? aka lady finger aka okra really 12 rupees kg??? haha! And panner ma fav how much does it cost in India now?? LOL..
And the SHAADI SCENE.. It reminded me of my bachpan.. cauz I have attempted a stunt like this as a kid.. My didi forced me and my cousins into a wedding.. it was kinda like a bet.. and we did go to an uninvited wedding and had a blast eating everything from starters to dessert... Gosh embarrassing and cute memories..

@ Adios...yes it looks like a very simple story at the face of it but the writers must've taken ages to figure out how to do it....
about the mixed reviews...well I think people were expecting a replay of the Munna Bhai magic...but this is different , it is a new style of filmmaking and a new area of story telling...It isnt all smooth ...the switch between comedy and seriousness... but that is the beauty of it...isnt life like that...U are gong thru tough times and suddenly someone cracks a joke and you smile :)

I saw an interview of Raju hirani and he was saying that he takes about 2 to 3 years to write scripts for his movies.. but because this script was inspired from a novel.. he just took about over a year to script it.. I have heard that it is quite different from the novel.. not sure though.. cauz I haven't read it! But imagine taking more than a year to script a movie.. sound exciting.. 😆 The movie appears to be simplistic from the outside.. but manages to talk about significant issues with ease and is very skillful and smart. And they have used humor in a very nice way! Really it is just a very refreshing take on things.
