I read somewhere that the original choice for the roles of rekha was parveen babi and for jaya it was smita patil.. but when yash raj showed amit the leading actresses he suggested that jaya and rekha should do it and since AB and rekha were alredy hot topic of BW yash chopra agreed and amitabh himself went and asked rekha and jaya to be part of it... and for the question of why jaya did this movie.... could be many motives to it.....or just simply money and ignorance
and i also read that the ending that yash chopra wrote was that in end amitabh goes with rekha at end but since it was contemporary zamana he was affraid that the audience wudnt accept it and it turned out to be their real life story...
