Chapter 11

flashback continues

Next morning

Devraj received a call from his boss who was very angry and worried.

"Tum is kaam ko seriously kyu nahi le rahe ho? Kuch andaza bhi hai tumhe ke kitne log is information k peeche pade hai? Kal agar us aadmi ko vo papers mil jaate to humara kitna bada nuksaan ho jata? 1 baat kaan khol kar sun lo- Agar ye kaam nahi hua, to mai tumhe aur us ladki, dono ko jaan se maar dunga."

The call was disconnected. Devraj fumed with anger and threw his phone across the floor. This was going nowhere. It seemed like there was no way out.

He drove to her office few evenings later and waited outside. She came out after an hour or so, looking worried. Devraj observed her carefully as she made her way towards her car, oblivious to him. He quickly walked upto her and called her. She truned around and smiled at him, but he did not miss the suspicion in her eyes. Taking care not to utter anything shady he went to meet her.

"Kya baat hai Devraj, mai jaha jati hu, tum mujhe vahi mil jaate ho!"

Devraj:"Mai bhi yahi soch raha tha...Kya baat hai aaj office me kaam zyada tha kya?"

Aasma:"Nahi kaam zyada nahi tha, bas waise hi kuch problem ho gai thi. Magar ab sab thik hai.Achcha to yaha kaise?"

Devraj:"Shopping. Raaste me tum dikh gai, to socha mil lu."

Aasma:"To shopping ho gai?"

Devraj:"No, not really. Yaha par bade malls me sabkuch hai siwaye jo mujhe chahiye. Tumhe koi jagah pata hai jaha mujhe thoda simple samaan mil sakta hai?"

Aasma:"Well, ek kaam karo, malls chodo aur yaha k local market me chale jao. I think that will suit you." she gave him the directions.

Devraj:"Well, thankyou so much. Do you think abhi ye market khula hoga?"

Aasma checked her watchand shook her head.

"I think tumhe kal tak wait karna padega."

Devraj smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

"Coffee?"he asked suddenly.

Aasma stared at him and said

"No i think I would prefer dinner."

Devraj:Ok to ghar chale ya restaurant?"

Aasma:"Ghar. Aur hume alag alag jana chahiye , I have my car too."

Devraj:"thats pretty obvious."

They drove to their flats parallel, smiling and waving whenever they caught each other's eye. But after sometime, Devraj noticed something. Somebody was following him. Or rather them. He glanced at Aasma's car which was ahead of him and then his stalker. He slowed down and let Aasma move ahead. His stalker moved past him- so he was following her. He saw the man who was driving- it was his boss' man. So he hasn't given up yet, he thought angrily as he took out his phone and dialled Aasma's number, instructing her to take other route to her house- the one which usually had traffic jams.

Aasma:"Devraj, ye tum kya keh rahe ho? Waha se jaane me to adha ghanta zyada lagega."

Devraj:"Aasma please trust me and do as I say.Shayad koi tumhara peecha kar raha hai."

Aasma obeyed him and took the crowded road. Devraj sped up and smiled as Aasma zoomed through the signal just before it turned red. The follower was left behind waiting at the signal. Devraj drew his car next to the man and knocked at his window. He rolled down the glass and Devraj smiled at him dangerously.

"Kya baat hai bhai, ladki ka peecha karne me bada maza a raha hai?"

The man was caught off guard and stared at him before drawing out his gun subtly so that others could not see it. But Devraj's smile widened.

"Mere paas bhi hai." Just then the signal turned green and they both sped off. This stretch of road was complaritively less crowded and they raced off without much obstructions. And then before the man knew, Devraj decreased his speed a little and gently banged against the left tail light of the man's car. The car rolled and crashed against the railing. The driver was mildly hurt. Devraj turned and saw Aasma's car ahead of him. She stopped it and came back to check on the man who was unconscious now. One look at him and she laughed.

"Mai kabse isey dhoondh rahi thi. Mera andaaza sahi nikla..."

Devraj arranged his featured into a puzzled expression. She looked at him and laughed again.

"Information mili thi k shayad koi mujhpar nazar rakh raha hai."

Devraj:"Par koi tumpar nazar kyu rakhega?"

Aasma bent down and pulled the man out of the car and walked around the car to note down its number.

"Tum khud hi soch lo. Thats twice you have saved me. Tumhe ye sab kaise ata hai?"

She suddenly stopped and looked up at him. He was still standing there only. He had expected this question and had his answer ready.

"Well, Maine kafi self defense aur NCC camps attend kare hai."

"Really?" her eyes narrowed.

"Haan. Action sequences ka kafi shauk hai mujhe. Actually mai defense join karna chahta tha...par meri eyesight me thodi problem ho gai. Its nothing major, I dont even need spectacles, but it was enough to disqualify my form." he shrugged.

"Oh." her expression cleared up and she called up the HQ to come up and get the man who was slowly stirring. Unnoticed by her, Devraj also sent somebody a message.

Aasma:"So Raj tum chaho to ghar ja sakte ho. Hq se kuch log atey hi honge."

Devraj:"Nahi sath chalte hai. Mujhe jaane ki koi jaldi nahi hai." he winked at her and she laughed. They tied the man to the car and leant against the railing, gazing at the dark sky. Devraj was feeling very strange- had he saved her because he wanted to, or because he wanted to use her? He wondred why she of all the people had to come back in his life.

"Raj" he came out of his reverie and turned to her.

"Haan bolo."

"Tum mujhe mere 1 dost ki yaad dilate ho..."

Devraj looked away and bit his lip. No, he would not do that.

"Achcha?"

Aasma smiled dreamily."Pata hai, jab mai choti thi, tab mera ek dost tha...Raj naam tha uska. Tumhe dekhkar mujhe uski yaad aati hai."

Devraj gulped and looked away.

"Vo bhi kafi kuch tumhare jaisa tha. Shayad ab agar vo mere saamne aye to mai usey pehchanu bhi nahi."

Devraj:"Tumhe pata hai k ab vo kaha hai?"

Aasma:"Nahi. Maine koshish ki thi usey dhoondhne ki, magar koi fayda nahi hua. Log to kehte hai k kuch saal pehle vo jaha rehta tha, us chaul me aag lag thi, shayad usi me...par mai nahi manti. Mai janti hu vo thik hai."

Devraj clutched the railing tightly and closed his eyes. When he opened them, he saw an army jeep coming towards them. He straighetened up as it pulled beside them and to his surprise a young boy leapt out of it and hugged Aasma. He looked in his teens and had twinkling eyes.

"Sam! tum yaha kaise?"

"Didi mai ghar gaya to aap mile nahi to socha office me hoge. In logo ne kaha k ye apke paas hi a rahe hai, to mai inke sath hi a gaya."

Aasma:"Lekin mai abhi mission par hu. This is dangerous Samarth tum meri koi baat mante kyu nahi?"

"Dangerous hai to aap yaha kya kar rahe ho?"

"Bachche ye mera kaam hai...Ab chalo ghar chalte hai."

Devraj was observing all this very carefully as the officers bundled up the man in the jeep. Aasma turned to him and said "Raj, ye mera bhai hai, Samarth. Sam, ye mere flat k saamne hi rehte hai."

Devraj held out his hand and said in a friendly tone, "Hi Sam."

Sam looked excited and shook his hand. The officers called Aasma and asked her permission to take the man for interrogation.

Aasma:"Haan isey HQ le chalo. Aur inki(Devraj) car ko mechanic k paas chod ayo."

Devraj:"Nahi mai manage kar lunga."

Aasma ignored his comment and continued turning to him, "Please do 1 more favour. Sam ko meri gaadi me ghar tak pahucha do. Mai inke sath HQ jaati hu."

Sam:"Nahi Di aap ghar chalengi. mai itne dino k baad ata hu aur apke paas mere liye time hi nahi hai?"

Aasma:"Sam samjha karo, kaam hai."

Devraj:"Im sorry to interfere par vo sahi keh raha hai. Kaam to kal subah bhi ho sakta hai na, ye admi subah tak mar thodi na jayega?"

Aasma looked confused but she finally decided in Sam's favour and got into the drivers seat with Sam and Devraj in her car.

Sam was chattering non stop about his school while Aasma and Devraj listened silently.

"Aur apko pata hai, vo jo motu Rajesh hai na, usko kal pt teacher ne ghuma k ek maara aur vo sidha jake swimming pool me gira..."

Aasma laughed and Devraj's phone vibrated, unnoticed. He gave it one look and placed it back inside his pocket. After a few minutes, Aasma's phone rung. She received the call and her expression changed instantly to being shocked and she stopped the car with a screech. Devraj and Sam spoke together.

"Kya hua?"

"Vo...us admi ko maar dia kuch logo ne. Dammit." she banged her fist against the dashboard while Devraj hid his smile. Sam looked a bit scared but covered it up pretty well.

"Aap chinta mat karo Di, mai apko kuch nahi hone dunga." he clutched her arm tightly. She smiled and ruffled his hair.

"Mujhe kuch nahi hoga. Chalo ghar chalte hai."

She started the engine again and acclerated. Her eyes caught Devraj's once or twice through the mirror and she saw reassurance and worry in them. He knew she might doubt him. But it was best to appear ignorant. they went to their respective houses without any further talk.

Same night, 2 hours later.

Devraj was sitting in his living room, watching television when the bell rung. He had been expecting this and opened the door to find Aasma.

Aasma:"Raj ek aur help karoge please."

Devraj:"agar tum itni formally puchogi to bilkul nahi karunga."

Aasma laughed and said,"Mai HQ ja rahi hu, mera waha hona zaruri hai. Tum ye ghar ki chabi le lo aur agar mai subah tak vapis nahi ati, to Sam ko baar dekh lena. Vaise use kisi help ki zarurat nahi padegi but still..."

Devraj silenced her with a gesture of his hand and said, "Ma samajh gaya. Tum apna kaam karo aur apna khyal rakhna. Mai baaki sab sambhal lunga, ok?"

Aasma smiled and handed him the key. He saw the emotions in her eyes. He knew was terribly lonely but would never let anyone peep inside her heart. Her eyes were the windows to her soul and he placed a hand on her shoulder reassuringly. She turned away and went away.

Devraj did not had to check on Sam as she came back before dawn.

Next day

Aasma came to meet him with breakfast ready as according to her he had had enough trouble because of her and she was in a mood to cook. So Devraj, Sam and Aasma had breakfast together.

Sam:Di aaj mujhe Essel world jana hai."

Aasma:"Hmm...thik hai. Taiyar ho jao, aj hum dono poora din ghumenge."

Sam:"Di,Love you for this. Hey-" he turned to look at Devraj so as to what to address him. Devraj smiled and said

"Raj"

Sam:"So Raj aap bhi humare sath chalo na."

Devraj looked confused from Aasma to Sam. This was aperfect opportunity for him to mingle up but an amuse ment park? Aasma's voice shook him.

"Raj, tum humare sath chal rahe ho.Final."

Devraj gave her a helpless look and she laughed. He joined in.

They all left for Essel world. Sam dragged them to every insane ride he could think of.

When they reached the roller coaster, Aasma swore loudly.

"Sam please ye nahi. i sick of it."

Sam:"Kyu Di aap darr gaye?"

Aasma:"Mai aur darr jau? Mai army officer hu bachchu!"

Sam caught Devraj's hand and pulled him.

"Aap to darpok nahi ho Raj, chalo hum chalte hai."

Devraj laughed and stretched out his hand to Aasma. She took it and went for the ride. All through the ride Devraj and Aasma were holding hands.

Devraj's phone rung again bringing him out of his past. It was Karan.

"Dev Naina ne tujhe bataya na k vo party k baad uske room me jayegi?"

"Haan. Uska phone aya tha."

"Dev tu thik to hai na?"

"Haan. bas is din ka bahut intzaar kia hai yaar. Aj is mauke ko hath se jane nahi de sakta. Aj yaha se ya to mai zinda niklunga ya Maxwell."

"Mai janta hu tu ussey itni naftrat kyu karta hai...par gusse me kuch aisa mat karna jissey baad me pachtana pade."

"Nahi karunga. Itne saalo me kuch sikha ho ya nahi, acting zarur sikh li hai."

Karan laughed and disconnected the call. Devraj cradled the gun in his hands and his eyes shone dangerously. He said to himslef

"Maxwell, jo tumne kia, ab tumhe uski saza dene ka waqt a gaya hai."

In other corner of the hotel

Niana disconnected the call and stared at her cellphone for a few moments. His words wer still ringing in her ears and it was hard to believe that she was actually getting into all this. She sat down on the bench in the corridor and hid her face in her hands. After some time she sighed and straighetened up, her face determined and set. She got up and left for her room.

"Ye kya ho raha hai mere sath...aj kisi bhi haal me nakamyab nahi hona hai mujhe."

She took out her gun and checked if it was loaded again. Her eyes fell on the logo it was bearing and he threw it away. From the window of her room she could see the path leading to the underground parking lot,where Devraj sat and her heart thumped against her ribs.
