Phone Calls

Synopsis: Rahul and Muskaan have a secret to keep, but when Rahul leaves town they might have trouble hiding it. It's a lot of Medical drama as well

***Monday 10:47 a.m. Muskaan's Clinic***

"Dr. Chadda."

"Hey, Muskaan."

She smiled at the sound of his voice. "Hi, Rahul. How was your flight?"

"Fine; I'm just waiting on my bag. I thought I would call and say I miss you."

She chuckled happily, "You just left this morning."

"Yeah, but this is the first time we've been apart since, you know."

"Since we hooked up?" she finished for him.

"Well, I was going to say since we started seeing each other, but yeah, if you want to get technical."

She could tell he was teasing her. They were still a bit unsure in their new relationship and tended to retreat toward familiar territory; she toward blunt spoken analysis and he toward humor. But, it would pass, neither of them had ever been happier than they had been over the last month.

"I like technicalities."

"Don't I know it," Rahul said with a laugh. "Ok, there's my bag. I'm going to get out of this airport and get settled, I'll call you later. I miss you."

Muskaan was eyeing Anjali who stood in her door. Opening up to everyone around them would be a happy experience, but so far they had told no one about their changed relationship. For a while longer they wanted to keep it their secret. She tried to answer him as clinically as possible. "I understand."

He got the message. "Someone is there, right?"

"That would be correct," she replied as Anjali walked into her office.

Rahul's voice dropped to a conspiratorial tone. "Ok, I'll let you go. I love you, Muskaan. I'll talk to you soon."

She wanted very much to reply to him that she felt the same, but instead she said, "Ok. Have a good trip."

She hung up and Anjali filled the silence. "Was that Rahul?"

Muskaan nodded. "He was calling to check in. I think he was hoping something came up so he could trench the assignment he's on."

It took Anjali only a second to translate what she really meant. "Ditch. He wants to ditch the assignment."

Muskaan nodded, "I guess so. He said this is the type of assignment meant to recognize him as a top Neurosurgeon, but he didn't really want to do it."

Anjali smirked. "That's because he doesn't like to leave you."

Muskaan tried to look like she didn't believe that. "Anjie."

"So what are you going to do while Doctor Handsome is out of town?"

"I have plenty of work," Muskaan answered succinctly, "If my patient Mr.Ajrun is ready for his surgery I'll have to go ahead and schedule all his Pre-Op appointments. I am telling you Anjie neurosurgery is a lot easier than being a neurologist like me. All Rahul does is the cutting and fixing but I am the one responsible for the technicalities…I'll manage without him."

"So, it's no big deal?" Anjali asked disbelievingly.

"Right, no big deal."

***Monday 8:31 p.m. Bangalore Hotel Room***

"Rahul."

"Hi."

His smile was meteoric; her voice did that for him. "Hi, Muski."

"So, how was your day?"

He allowed her to hear his frustration. "A big waste of time! I was interviewed by the big shots of Banglore's Sanjeevani, observed them while they operated. They don't need me here." He sighed, "You know what? I don't want to talk about how I'm wasting my time. Let's talk about something more interesting."

"Like what?" she asked with a laugh.

"Like," he paused for effect, "what are you wearing?" he asked lustily.

"I hate to disappoint you," she said with a naughty smile, "but I just returned from work-out. I'm wearing sweats and I'm all dirty."

"Oooh," Rahul breathed, "don't underestimate the appeal of you all sweaty, Muski. I love it when you have been working out."

She laughed, "You are terrible." She couldn't help but notice the change he was exhibiting. "You know," she observed in her sexiest clinical voice, "you would never have been this forthcoming about your fantasies before."

"Well, its different now," he said and she could actually hear him smiling. "Before, it was weird, you know talking about it."

"Why?"

"Because we didn't have that kind of relationship, Muskaan," he explained.

"But you wanted to," she teased.

"Yeah, but so did you."

"Yes, I think we've had this discussion."

"Hmm, you're right, but if you want to talk about how you were pining away for me before, I'm ok with that."

"Rahul!" she said happily, "you are unbelievable."

"Thanks, Muski."

She laughed out loud. "When are you coming back?" she asked, changing the subject.

"Not soon enough. I have to make a good faith effort here, that's going to take a few more days."

She sighed. "Ok, I miss you," she admitted silkily.

"Me too. Tell me about your day."…

***Tuesday 1:17 p.m., Pathology Lab***

"Hey, Rahul."

"Hey, Muskaan. Listen I need to know how long it takes for cyanide or chlorine to dissipate from the air and then how long before traces are difficult to detect in a body particularily the brain."

"Rahul, there are a wide range of factors to consider in each of those scenarios. Do you have any real facts?"

"No, just generally speaking, Muskaan. Can you give me a ballpark?"

"You know I don't do that."

"Muskaan, what's the big deal? Just do the math in that super smart brain of yours and spit out some numbers. It will take you like 2 seconds."

"Why do you always do this to me? You expect me to short cut the biology of medicine so you can jump to some conclusion."

He sighed. "I'm just trying to make a point to some people here. I'm not trying to base any evidence on it, I'm just having a discussion." He changed his tone, "Please?"

She smiled, hoping Riddhima, who was working nearby, didn't notice. "Alright," she relented. "I'd say generally speaking in the air 20 minutes for chlorine, 20 hours for cyanide. In terms of tissue detection, most labs would have difficulty determining existence after 2 years in the brain alone, but we could find it almost indefinitely."

"Thanks." He paused, she could tell he wanted to say more. "I'll talk to you later."

"Yeah, ok."

She hung up and turned back to her table.

Riddhima looked up. "That was Rahul, I could tell from the lively conversation. How is Banglore?"

"Fine, I guess." Muskaan replied already focusing on the brain tissue of Mr.Arjun before her. "He said he was trying to prove a point, but I question his accuracy."

***Tuesday 11:06 p.m. Muskaan's apartment***

"Hello?"

"Oh, I woke you, huh? I'm sorry."

She rubbed the sleep from her eyes. "No, that's ok I must have dozed off. I was lying here, expecting you to call." She smiled, "I'm glad you did."

Rahul climbed into his own bed and covered his half naked form with the sheet. "I was invited to dinner, didn't feel like I could say no, but man, it went on forever." He propped his head on extra pillows, "thanks for the trivia help earlier today."

"You are welcome, but it wasn't very accurate, you shouldn't try to prove anything with that information."

"I was just trying to make a point to the surgeons here; to explain the benefits of our approach."

"We have an approach?"

"Sure, you plus me? Unbeatable combination, remember? Guts and factual medicine."

"Guts and factual medicine, is that all we are?"

He laughed softly. "Not anymore." He changed the subject, "so, you're already in bed there, Muskaan?"

"Yes, I went ahead and got ready so I wouldn't be in the middle of my routine when you called. I lay down, guess I fell asleep waiting for you."

"Get caught up on the sleep now, Dr. Muskaan, because when I get back to that bed you aren't getting much sleep for awhile."

His obvious desire made her smile. Even from a seven hundred miles away he could make her feel special, warm and safe, and very much desired. "I'll hold you to that, Neurosugery specialist Dr. Rahul Garewal."…

***Wednesday 9:03 a.m. Sanjeevani Bangalore***

"Rahul"

"Rahul, it's Riddhima, I have you on speaker phone."

"Hey, Ridz, what's up?"

"I've tried to reason with her, but I'm going to have a situation on my hands if you can't do a better job."

"Ridzi, what are you talking about?"

"She doesn't want me to assist Mr.Arjun's Surgery," Muskaan interjected. "But I have no choice, we can't work this way, Rahul!"

"Will someone please tell me what is going on!"

Riddhima took a deep breath. "Dr. Chadda is irate, and I don't blame her. The surgeon they have covering for you just violated about 30 steps in the normal neurosurgery protocol."

"Rahul! He didn't notify me, I did not finish running all the pre-op formalities, he just started cutting in to Mr.Arjun's brain without running it by me first. I can't work this way, Rahul!"

"Yeah, Muskaan, you mentioned that."

"She's 100% correct, Rahul," Riddhima agreed, "we have to control the fast paced surgeon or the results won't be pretty for Mr.Arjun or his family."

"Let me work on it," he agreed. "Muskaan, don't call anyone else, I have this."

"I need access to that surgery right now, Rahul," she warned.

"I heard you, Dr.Chadda. Who's the witty head of Neurosurgery?"

"Witty head, very funny," Riddhima complimented him. "but right now it's Dr.Armaan."

"I should have known," Rahul growled. "Ridzi, thanks for calling. Muskaan, I'll call you back in 5 minutes with everything you need. Don't call the boss!"

"I heard you, Rahul. Just fix it."

***Wednesday 10:04 Mumbai Sanjeevani***

"Armaan."

"Armaan, it's Rahul. Are you an idiot, or are you just trying to make a fool of yourself?"

"What the hell are you talking about, and watch the tone before we have a problem."

"We already have a problem you moron," Rahul snapped. "The boss hands you a team with a nearly perfect close rate. All you have to do is cover the plate while I'm out of town. And, in ten minutes you manage to completely eliminate any chance you have at success. So, are you a moron?"

"Are you talking about this case?"

"Yes. Try to keep up Armaan. Am I going too fast for you? Should I use little words? Stop whatever you have going, do not touch that patient and wait for the Neurology team! You've already made their jobs more difficult. I can't believe you are screwing this up!"

"Look, Rahul, I'm not some green recruit. I know how to execute my surgery."

"No, you know how to execute a regular surgery. But, if your patient is so far gone that you need my Squints then you can't follow standard protocol. Dr.Chadda's standards are incredibly high and you are missing the bar."

"Whatever."

"No, not whatever. Listen, Armaan, you are a place holder. All you have to do is follow Dr. Muskaan's instructions to the letter. That way you don't completely ruin this."

"So, that's your secret to success, Rahul? You just do whatever an unspecialized neurologist says?" he mocked.

"No, but that's all you are going to do. Just follow her lead until I get back there and fix this."

"I can handle a Metastaic patient, Rahul!" Armaan said angrily.

Rahul laughed at him. "But you can't handle Muskaan. Trust me, you have no chance." He switched gears, tired of the argument. "What's your deal?"

"What?"

"Try to keep up, Armaan," Rahul said as if speaking to a child. "Tell me about the spread of the disease. Where is it?"

"It's spreaded towards the abdominal cavity; Mets are into the lungs as well."

"What does the scans look like; any decay or all growth?"

"It's hard to say, it's pretty gross. I guess some decay, but mostly growth."

"Any complications?"

"Yeah," Armaan clearly did not understand the questioning. "Look, Rahul. I'm shipping all the reports and scans to Path lab, your neuro-team will get all the time they want to poke at it."

"No!" Rahul cried into the phone. "Don't touch anything. Don't ship anything. Just stand there and guard it until my people arrive. You need all three, Riddhima, Atul and Muskaan. They'll be there in 15 minutes."

"Why three, wouldn't one suffice?"

"You just told me you needed all three. Shut up." Rahul's voice took a threatening tone. "Armaan, this is a direct order. Do not touch anything. And when Dr. Muskaan arrives you do exactly what she says."

Armaan sighed, "Yes, Sir."

***Wednesday 10:07 Muskaan's Office***

"Dr.Chadda."

"Hey, Muski. Armaan is an idiot."

"Yes, I know."

He chuckled. "I have him on strict orders to sit tight until you arrive. Sounds like you should take Atul and Ridzi too."

"I'm planning on it; and several techs since it's now a compromised case to wrok on."

"Don't shoot Armaan."

"No promises," she said smiling slightly. "Thanks for the help. I wish you were here so we didn't have to deal with this."

"Me too. Go, I'll call you later."

***Wednesday 3:53 Pathology Lab ***

"Hey Rahul."

"Hey, you get what you needed from Armaan?"

"Yes, let me put you on speaker." Muskaan handed her phone to a tech who connected it to the system. "Rahul, can you hear me?"

"Loud and clear; what do we have?"

"Male, 18-25. I'm still working on an exact root of the tumor's spread."

Armaan chimed in from behind her. "I'm going to go out on a good guess and say that tumor orginated in his head."

"Shut up, Armaan," Rahul answered. "She means the exact origin. Squints don't guess and they never assume."

"He has been listening," Atul joked.

"Funny, Atul," Booth acknowledged, "what do you have, nerd man?"

"Particulates suggest the tissue was damaged, I have blood samples, tissue cultures and MRI results that show the exact spread in to the cerebral hemisphere of Mr.Arjun's brain. I'll know more in an hour or two."

"Ridzi?" Rahul asked.

"Muskaan is still doing her initial examination, but I have plenty to work with. I can have the tox screens before the end of the day."

Rahul grunted in understanding. "Anjali?"

"Waiting on the head. I'll stay tonight until I have a procedure protocol to carry out with the patient."

"Muskaan, what's taking so long? You usually don't take this long for an initial review."

"Everything was compromised due to the unnessesary incision of Mr.Arjun's brain this afternoon, I'm having to be very careful."

"Understood. Do what you have to." He raised his voice as if he were actually there to call across the room. "Armaan, make yourself useful. Run all the necessary scans on Mr. Arjun and get all his reports including the blood work from last month."

"Why?"

Rahul sighed. "Were you not listening? Atul gave you that info at the start of this call."

"I thought that was just a guess."

Five voices answered in unison. "We don't guess."

"Honestly, Rahul," Muskaan said as Armaan stomped off the platform, "how long do we have to put up with this?"

"I'm hurrying, Muski. I should be back soon; if I have my way, no later than tomorrow."

Her voice softened just a bit and the other scientists exchanged a knowing look, "Ok, just hurry."

"Whatever you say, Dr. Chaddha. Work the case, I'm coming."

***Thursday 6:35 Muskaan's apartment***

"Hello?"

"Good morning, Beautiful."

She stretched, still holding the phone to her ear. "Hmmm, I miss waking up with you."

"There will be no more of that. Tomorrow morning I'll be there."

She smiled, thrilled that he was coming home to her. "When are you coming home?"

"Can you pick me up at Mumbai's Airport at 11:15 I'm on Continental 857, Gate 11."

"I'll be there. I'm sorry I didn't call you back last night, but it was so late when I left the lab I was afraid I would wake you."

"That's ok. Did you make any headway with the case?"

"Anjali found a cause; Accidental injury when he was in his late teen, about 4 years a go and a seizure for which he was admitted sometime back. But then Armaan had some different theory to go along with"

"Hopefully he can just handle taking care of the patient until I get there."

"I wouldn't bet on it," she disagreed wryly. She glanced at the clock. "If I'm going to pick you up I need to get into the lab."

"Ok, I can't wait to see you."

She smiled as she climbed out of bed. "I'll see you soon." She started to hang up and then pulled the phone back, "Rahul!"

"Yeah, Muskaan?" he asked with concern.

"I," she paused, "I just wanted to say I love you."

His voice thrilled her when he answered, "I love you more, Muski."

***Thursday 11:17 Mumbai Airport***

"Hey Muskaan."

"Hey Rahul, where are you?"

"I'm headed your way. What are you impatient to see me?"

She smiled. "You know I am, I think we covered how much I was missing you when we talked the other night."

"Hmm, refresh my memory."

"Well, you said you missed holding me as we went to sleep and I said I was missing what we did before we went to sleep."

"That does ring a bell," he said his lips brushing her ear.

She whirled around, surprised to find him standing behind her. She gave him a surprised grin and slid her arms around his neck. As she kissed him hello she pressed the key to hang up her phone. She really wasn't satisfied with just a simple welcome home kiss so she pulled him tightly against her and deepened the kiss into something much more intimate.

When she finally released him Rahul pulled away just enough to flash her a goofy grin. "I think someone missed me." He hugged her to him, his arms wrapped possessively around her waist.

She traced a finger along his jaw enjoying the feel of his rough skin. "I missed you more than I thought possible." She pulled him down to her and kissed him again, gently. "I don't like conducting our relationship via phone."

As if on cue her cell phone rang. Rahul caught her hand as it reached for the phone. "Let it ring." The kiss he gave her discouraged any other plan.
