Hearing the Basilisk

I just finished re-reading COS for the hundredth time and thought of something. Harry is the only one who can hear Tom Riddle controlling the basilisk because he is a parsel tongue. When the dueling club is started he tells the snake not to attack Justin. Everyone hears a hissing sound from Harry's mouth. They do not understand what he is saying, but can tell he is talking to the snake. Shouldn't the basilisk be the same way? Tom was speaking to it but only Harry could hear it. Everyone else should be able to hear a hissing sound like they did with Harry, but not understand it. They can hear parsel tongue from Harry but not understand it, yet they cannot understand Tom Riddle using it to command the basilisk. I figured people should have heard a hissing sound when the basilisk was in the pipes.

Nice point.
That may just be a possible error in the story!

I think when Harry heard the basilisk via the pipes, it was more of the thoughts of the basilisk.. I'm not sure though.

They probably heard it and dismissed it as something weird going on with the pipes

I agree in a huge castle like hogwarts there is a lot of noise everywhere so i don't think anyone could have heard any hissing but since harry could actually understand the words being spoken they stood out......

I think when the Basilisk was in the pipes- the basilisk was talking so no one understood or heard because you can't hear snakes talk whereas harry being a Parseltongue did- but when Harry spoke- it was snake Language from a human mouth so everyone heard him say it.

no one said that everyone else knew that snake was talking to harry, they just knew harry was talking to the snake..or rather, AT him..
i guess the snake/basilisk cannot be heard(except by parselmouths)..but harry can be heard, because he's still talking(and its also visible by moving lips)..just in a different language

But didnt Harry ask Hermione and Ron whether they heard something and they had said no. even professor lockhart was sitting with Harry and he didnt hear anything, when Harry asked him, prof. simply said that its very late Harry. Prof didnt hear anything either
