"Thapkiji?" Thapki and her little brats turned as one and looked inquiringly at the person who had hailed her , Bihaan.
"Thapkiji , do you mind if I come along with you guys?"
"We don't mind at all, Bihaan. In fact your company and expertise would be most appreciated."
Thapki smiled broadly and Sankar felt arrows of jealousy pierce her heart as Bihaan responded with a dimpled grin of his own. In the ten years Sankar had known him, not once had Bihaan bestowed on her that famous dimpled wala smile of his and yet every look he gave Thapki was accompanied by it. Bani extended a welcoming hand to Bihaan and he warmly clasped it whilst Tina extended hers to Thapki. Sankar wanted to scream with frustration. The little family she had done so much to pull apart stood with clasped hands giving each other joyful and loving looks.
"Ummm. Where exactly are we going?" Bihaan inquired after interminable minutes of admiring stares at each other.
"We are going to the orchard to get mangos for these two mango crazies, what else, Papa?" Bani calling Bihaan her papa had slipped in so naturally for a moment no one realised what she had said till she did herself. She bit her tongue , "Sorry, I called you Papa. It just slipped out."
"Why be sorry? Papa from your lips sounds really good to me. You are both my daughters after all aren't you?" Bani and Tina looked at each other and nodded their heads in unison. It seemed like the most natural thing in the world for Bihaan to enfold his two daughters in his arms. Tina turned to Thapki creating space for her in their group hug.
"Maa?" It was both a proclamation as well as an invitation to join the family. Thapki's eyes locked with Bihaan's and there was no denying the invitation in his own eyes. Two quick steps and she too was enfolded in their loving embrace . Thus it was the assassin known as "The Doctor" got his first glimpse of the supposed target who would take his kill tally to a century. The "Doctor" had been sitting in the sweltering heat of his car for nigh on two hours at that point and was feeling hot and irascible. What he witnessed though melted his heart. Self-consciously, the little family disassembled from their family hug and smiling happily started walking towards the back gate. Through his binoculars the doctor looked at the woman smiling lovingly at the man walking a couple of paces from her and then looked at the photograph he had been given to identify her by. The photograph had not done her any justice because in reality she was far more beautiful than it appeared in the photo, but there was no denying that this was the supposed interloper . The doctor's thoughts went into overdrive. His instincts screamed that the relationship between these two was deep and abiding and of many lifetimes. There was no way in hell this woman was the interloper. As he heard screeches of excitement coming from the back where the man and woman and the two little girls had disappeared, the assassin found himself driving his car to the back to park and watch the enthralling little family interacting once again. As for Sankar, still up on the balcony, she had wanted to tear her hair out when she saw the little impromptu family hug. It was only upon remembering that she had hired a professional killer that she had let herself relax.
"Go ahead Thapki. Enjoy. I am not gonna begrudge you these small last moments of happiness. Very soon your life will be over . Khatam. " Sankar laughed happily and walked jauntily down the balcony steps humming happily to herself. She had to go and pack her bags and announce to everyone that she was leaving for the village. When Thapki's body was found every single one of those stupid Pandeys would definitely point fingers at her so to obviate that little trouble Sankar was gonna make herself scarce. A quick little jaunt to the village to inform Kosi of the upcoming funeral of their archnemesis Thapki and perhaps a invite to her own son's nuptials would make Kosi's day.
