Chapter 9
"The havan is ready. Please bring the bride and groom," the Panditji announced. Rachita felt her heart thud painfully against her chest. This was it. She was getting married to Rama. There was no turning back now. Only looking forward - to make the best of whatever was going to happen ahead. Just as Rachita stood up to make her way to the mandap, she heard someone say, "Stop! Stop this!" She turned to find Rama's mom and a sense of cold dread crept up her insides.
"This wedding cannot happen!" Rama's mother announced. Everyone went silent in shock before Rama spoke up, "What are you saying Amma?" "I know what I am saying. You stay quiet. This wedding cannot happen!" Sumitra continued. Sneha and Chaubeyji immediately rushed to her side. "What are you saying Sumitraji? Have we made a mistake? Have there been any shortcoming in the arrangements? If so, I apologize to you but please.. Please don't say such ominous things like calling the wedding off," Sneha said, folding her hands in front of Sumitra.
"A major wrong has happened. You have tried to cheat us! And I will not tolerate this," Sumitra said. "What are you talking about Sumitraji? How have we tried to cheat you? And why would we try to cheat you?" Chaubeyji asked. "I've always told you that beneath all that faade of being a respectable and honorable man, you are just a two faced liar. And now I know that for sure!" Sumitra shot back at Gajanand Chuabey angrily. "Sumitraji! Please! Come inside and we will talk things out. Please do not create a scene like this. I am sure it is some silly misunderstanding," Pushpa tried to intervene.
"Why should I come inside to talk? Whatever needs to be said and clarified will be done right here. In front of the whole of Benaras. After all, did you not get my son beaten up in front of all these people? You didn't take him aside and talk to him, did you?" Sumitra asked, glaring her eyes at Gajanand Chaubey. "Amma, we've let all that go now. Why are you bringing it up again?" Rama asked. "You might have let it go Rama, but I never did and never will," Sumitra said angrily. "But Aunty what is the matter? Why are you asking us to stop the wedding? How did we try to cheat you?" Amaya asked.
"Ask your mother," Sumitra replied, "Ask her what it is that she hides behind this pretty, innocent face of hers." Sneha felt her hands and feet go numb. What could she be talking about? Surely she wouldn't know that.. "Auntyji please. I don't know what it is that has got you so riled up, but please do not talk to my mother like that," Rachita spoke up. "Quick to jump to your mother's defense eh? But ever wondered why your mother is standing silently? Because she knows that what I am saying is true. Sneha Mathur.. You've tried to cheat us.. You've tried to dump this illegitimate daughter of yours, Rachita, on our family!" Sumitra yelled.
A shocked gasp resonated through the gathered crowd and all eyes shifted to Sneha who stood looking as if her very life had drained out of her body. Amaya was the first to react, "What nonsense are you talking about Aunty? Just because you are angry at us for whatever Rudra did to Rama jiju, it does not mean you can make any kind of allegation and get away with it. What nonsense is this? Rachi di is dad's, Rishi Mathur's daughter! Rama jiju loves Rachi di. If you cannot get yourself to accept that fact gracefully, then why did you agree to this marriage? How dare you create such a scene now and make such a disgusting allegation?" "Aye ladki! Stop your drama. You know nothing. Ask your mother. Why is she standing her like a statue? Or even better, ask your Nanaji, the honorable, respected Gajanand Chaubey what the truth is. I dare them to refute what I am saying. Sneha? Gajanand? Come on, speak up. If I am lying, tell all these people that I am lying," Sumitra said.
Gajanand looked towards Sneha who stood looking pale and shattered. "Stop it Auntyji! Please! I know you don't like me but that does not give you the right to insult my family and my mother so. And what do you think? You think you'll come here and say something as ridiculous as this and we'll all believe you? What proof do you have?" Rachita asked angrily. "Proof? You are asking me for proof? My biggest proof is your mother's silence. Ask her! Ask her why she isn't speaking a word when you and this sister of yours are screaming at the top of your lungs that I am lying?" Sumitra retorted. "Our mom does not need to say anything to prove herself to you or anyone. She is right and will always be!" Amaya jumped to Sneha's defense. "Fine! Your mother is a virtuous angel and I am wrong. But for the sake of us lesser mortals, ask her to just say once that what I am saying is a lie. I swear on my son that I will never speak a word in my life after that if she does!" Sumitra announced. "Sneha? Come on. Oh you aren't even looking at me! Come on, if I am lying, look me in the eye and tell me that I am lying!" Sumitra challenged Sneha.
"Sneha! This is a question of Rachita's life. Speak up Sneha! Say something! Tell everyone that Sumitra is lying," Pushpa urged Sneha. Sneha stood there stone-faced, not responding and a heavy cloud of silence and doubt settled on the crowd. "Mom! Why are you quiet? Why aren't you saying anything? Am I.. Am I not dad's daughter?" Rachita walked towards Sneha and grabbed her by the shoulders. Sneha did not speak a word. "Mom please say something. Please.. Just.. Tell her that its not true and that I am dad's daughter! Come on Mom! Say it! Say that whatever she said is not true!" Rachita said hysterically shaking Sneha to get her to say something. When Sneha did not respond despite Rachita's pleadings, Rachita fell to the floor crying. "Mom! You don't need to prove yourself or answer to anyone. None of us even for a second doubt that Rachi di is dad's daughter. But your silence will only be misconstrued Mom, lets not give them a chance to do that," Amaya tried reasoning with Sneha but Sneha still said nothing and simply cried into her pallu.
"Sumitraji, please, I beg of you. Lets go in the room and talk things out," Gajanand said, folding his hands in front of Sumitra. "I told you Gajanand Chaubey that whatever needs to be said and done will be said and done right here! And as it is, there is nothing left to be said. We will not accept an illegitimate girl as the daughter-in-law of our family! Come Rama.. Lets leave!" Sumitra said as she turned towards Rama.
She was stopped by something tugging onto her feet. She turned to find Sneha at her feet, crying, "Please.. Please Sumitraji. Don't do this. Please don't break this marriage. Rachita loves Rama. Please.. Don't punish my daughter for my mistakes. Rishi always always considered Rachita his first born. Please.. Don't do this.. Don't break my daughter's heart." Everyone gathered looked on in shock at Sneha's confession. Rachita felt as if her whole world had come crashing down. Sumitra paid no heed to Sneha and kicked her away making Sneha fall to the ground and hit her head. Amaya and Jazz rushed to Sneha's aide.
"Do you not have the least bit of shame? How do you expect me to accept your sin as the Lakshmi of my house? After knowing how characterless you are, how do you expect me to still accept your daughter as my son's bride? You are characterless to begin with and this illegitimate daughter of yours, she has shown the true colors of her bad blood by enticing my son. This entire family is dishonorable! Who would want to have an alliance with such a dirty family?" Sumitra continued insulting them as Sneha cried and pleaded with her.
Mantu had been a silent spectator to the happenings but seeing Sneha Aunty who had been like a mother to him in this state, he could no longer keep quiet.
"Rama, say something. How can you keep quiet like this? You love Rachita, don't you? Then how can you just stand and listen when she is being insulted?" Mantu asked Rama. "Why are you interfering in this Mantu? I am not insulting her without reason, am I?" Sumitra interrupted Mantu. "I am only saying the truth. How can we and why should we get Rama married to this girl who does not even know who her real father is?"
Mantu turned to Rama, "Rama, you fell in love with Rachita because of the person she is, right? It did not matter to you then whose daughter she was or what family she belonged to, then why should anything change now?" Mantu tried desperately to talk sense into Rama who stood there mute. "Mantu! Stop it! Its very easy to say such big big words. But when it comes to walking the talk, it isn't that easy. Forget Rachita! I don't think any respectable guy would be willing to marry any girl from this family! Arey, when the mother herself is so characterless, the girls would be worse off than their mother!" Sumitra continued.
"Enough Aunty! Enough! You have no right to talk about my mother like this! You know nothing about her.." Amaya tried to give it back to Sumitra. "I know all that I need to know about her. Who knows, maybe your mother's characterlessness is the reason why your father committed suicide!" Sumitra said. "AUNTY!!!" Amaya, Rachita and Jazz shouted in unison. "Arey waah Sneha, you've taught your daughters well eh? They won't hear anything against you even if you are in the wrong. And that is precisely why I said, no one will want to marry one of these girls after knowing their history," Sumitra continued.
"Rama, how can you not have anything to say?" Mantu asked his best friend, "Say something Rama!" "Arey what will he say? Even he is equally shocked. Understand now my child, that this love shav was all nonsense. You are innocent. This characterless girl enticed you and you are so innocent and nave you fell into her trap. Now, lets just go," Sumitra said grabbing Rama's hand.
"Rama, think about it once. If you leave from here, you will be making the biggest mistake of your life. You will be wronging the love that you have for Rachita," Mantu tried to tell him. "What nonsense are you talking about? Love, love, love! There was, is and will never be any love. Who will marry from a family where you don't even know who the girl's father is for sure? Let me ask the crowd gathered here. Is there anyone? Anyone at all who'd be willing to marry any of these girls after knowing the truth about their family?" Sumitra challenged the onlookers.
"Yes!"
The voice came from right behind her. She turned to find Mantu looking at her determinedly. "Mantu?" Sumitra asked. "I said yes!" he paused and looked at Amaya for a brief second before looking Sumitra in the eye and saying, "I love Amaya and nothing in her past, nothing about her family makes absolutely any difference to me. I still love her and have no problem at all marrying her. Not that I need to prove anything to you at all, but still.." Mantu turned and headed towards Amaya in long, steady strides. He paused right in front of her for a second, his eyes conveying his love for her as he held her gaze steadily. He then caught hold of her arm and took her to the mandap. "Panditji, please read the mantras for the wedding," he instructed the Pandit as he lifted the dupatta of Amaya's lehenga and placed it over her head. He handed Amaya a wedding garland. Amaya simply stared at him. It was as if their eyes were having a conversation that the outside world could not hear.
"Is this real Mantu? Is this right?"
"It is Amaya! Trust me!"
Amaya placed the garland around his neck, and he placed one around hers. He took her hand in his and they walked seven circles around the holy fire. When he was done, he tied the mangalsutra around her neck and filled the parting of her hair with sindoor. "Now auntyji, I have married Amaya. Do you need any more proof for the power of true love? Do you need any more proof on how much faith I have in the one I love and her family? And what about you Rama?" Mantu asked.
"See! This is what I said. Both the girls are characterless. The older one does not know who her father is and look, the second one has trapped Mantu with her charms. She has been having an affair with Mantu right beneath everyone's noses and yet no one knew about it," Sumitra continued. "Enough Auntyji! You are forgetting that Amaya is my wife now. And I will not let anyone insult her," Mantu intervened. "But.." Sumitra was interrupted by Rama who finally spoke up. "Mantu is right Amma. Please stop."
Sumitra turned to Rama, "Rama?" "The only reason I was quiet for so long Amma was because.. I was amazed.. I was amazed that my own mother was capable of so much hatred. I agree that what happened was wrong. Rudra beating me up was wrong. But I thought my happiness mattered to you and that's why you agreed to this marriage. But no.. You were doing this all along only for your revenge. Amma.. Does my happiness not matter to you? How could you insult Rachitaji and her family so? Mantu is right Amma. I did not fall in love with Gajanand Chaubey's granddaughter or Rishi Mathur's daughter. I fell in love with just Rachita ji. It does not matter to me that Rishi Mathur is not her dad. The only thing that matters to me is whether she loves me or not and she does."
"You are saying all of this to me?" Sumitra asked Rama, "They beat you up and left you to die in the middle of the market and insulted me and you are on their side now?" "Its not about taking sides Amma. Its about what is wrong and right. What they did was wrong. But neither Sneha Aunty nor Rachita ji asked Rudra to beat me up. In fact Rachitaji was trying to stop Rudra all along. Then why does this to them? Weren't you the one who said Chaubeyji himself came to apologize and fix the marriage? An older, well-respected man came to your doorstep and apologized and you couldn't find it in you to forgive them? I know its because you love me so very much Amma and you are terribly hurt and pained by everything that happened. But in the end, if you love me so very much, shouldn't my happiness matter to you? You are a woman too Amma. Shouldn't you know what a woman's respect and honor means to her? Then how could you malign Sneha aunty's honor like this in front of everyone? How could you have so much hatred in your heart Amma? All they gave me were a few physical wounds, to protect their daughter and those are all healed. But the kind of wounds that you have given them today.. not even time can heal those Amma." Rama said.
"You have gone mad. You can never be happy with this girl. And I will never accept an illegitimate girl as my daughter-in-law. Never!" Sumitra yelled. "Don't get so blind in your love for me Amma that you don't see when you end up losing me," Rama said. "Rama!" Sumitra looked at him shocked, "What are you saying?" "Exactly what you heard. I love Rachita ji and I still want to marry her.. If she can find it in her to forgive me and you for all the pain you've caused them. If you can accept this relationship and give us your blessings, fine. If not.. I will still marry Rachita ji," Rama declared.
"You will go against your mother and marry this characterless girl?" Sumitra asked disbelievingly. "Amma, for the last and final time, Rachita ji is not characterless. If one of us has been characterless in this relationship, its been me. I was the one constantly looking for ways to be near her and around her. I was the one who followed her to her coaching classes. I was the one who proposed to her. And what do I have to offer her? I don't even have a proper job! She is so educated. She can get any job she likes and can stand on her own two feet. You should be grateful that she is willing to marry me. Its my good fate Amma that Rachitaji agreed to marry me. Like Mantu said, love isn't just about saying I love you. It is to stand by your loved one too. And I am thankful to Mantu for making me realize it. It is my duty to ensure that I take care of Rachita ji, protect her, honor her, respect her and keep her happy. Not just her.. Her family too.. And I fully intend to do that once we are married. If that cannot be done with you around.. Then.." Rama paused. "Then what?" Sumitra asked. "Then I will simply move elsewhere with Rachitaji," Rama announced.
"You will leave your mother for her?" Sumitra asked disbelievingly. "If I have to," Rama replied calmly. "Enough Sumitra! Enough of your nonsense! You've created enough and more of drama. I am not willing to lose my son because of you! Apologize right now to the Mathur-Chaubey family and let this wedding happen or our relationship is over. I will gladly welcome my son and daughter-in-law into a house without you," Rama's dad finally spoke up. Sumitra felt devastated that both her son and husband had ganged up against her. She looked at her son who turned away from her and she left the hall without a word.
Rachita sat feeling numb all over when Rama came towards her. She saw him touch Sneha's and Gajanand Chaubey's feet and apologize to them before he came to her. He crouched down beside her and said, "Rachitaji.. I know a lot has happened. I would like to apologize to you on behalf of my mother. She loves me a little too much and her need to avenge me blinded her. I don't know if you can find it in you to forgive us - my mother and me but, I am sorry." He sat in front of her with folded hands. Rachita looked around at everyone gathered. Suddenly, she felt as if she was in the midst of strangers. Rishi Mathur was not her dad. She did not know who her dad was. All her life, she had lived a lie. Her own mother had hid the biggest truth of her life from her. And in the midst of all these strangers, the one person who had been true to her always was Rama.
She felt broken from within. She didn't even know who she was anymore. But Rama was standing by her even after knowing the truth. She was angry, she was upset, she didn't know what to do and she needed someone to hold onto in this darkness that was closing in on her. And the one person who she knew would do that was in front of her right now. Rama had nothing to do with her past and she needed someone like that. She sobbed as she placed her hand in Rama's. Rama led her to the mandap and the two of them got married.
