If we look at the childhood segments, wasn't it Onu who took the marriage seriously quicker than Taani did? Most of the time when Taani was questioning her parents on it and voicing against it, it was Onu who decided early on to act the way he thought a husband should act -- working at the pizza place to get Taani's sari, for instance. Ironically, the same Onu tells Taani later that the marriage was nothing but an illusion that they allowed themselves to fall into. Why would Onu take such a leap when Taani wouldn't? One reason was obviously because it would hurt to remember Taani herself and all he would be missing with her. The other reason, I think, was that Shekhar and Laboni, due to their differences, decided not to take the bond THEY created seriously, and saw it fit to pretend it never happened. To a child of fifteen who has been forced into an early marriage and who grows to love the girl he married, what does that say about the bond of marriage itself?

I think what Onu wants is not just an end to the bal-vivah, but also an end to the cavilier attitude almost everyone has towards his marriage with Taani. At least his marriage as an adult, by his own will, will be taken seriously AS a marriage, not just as something the elders of the family can turn a blind eye to when they feel like it.

Well said, Nads...and while we're on the topic of Nupur -- considering that he was Orindam's ward, and met Nupur as Orindam's ward, I'm guessing there were similarities between the development of his friendship with Nupur and his friendship with Taani. He mentions, the morning after he's told Taani that he loves her but isn't in love with her, that he originally hated Nupur for having a family while he was alone, but ended up friends and then dated her. Which probably means that -- 1. He was forced to realise that he would never meet Taani again, undergo a deep personality change AND found a Taani-replacement in Nupur, 2. Nupur was his way of coping with the fact that his marriage with Taani is of no importance to anyone -- kind of like, if no one cares about it why should I!

I guess he feels that with a real marriage in his hands, people would at least pretend to respect Taani rather than use her when they want to (like at the engagement ceremony) and call her his wife only because they will save face by doing so...and Nupur, Shekhar, Ananya, Orindam and Riteish will not possess the liberties of messing up their relationship like they do now.
