Chapter 1
3 years later
She sat on the window sill, her head leaning on the glass. Carefully she glided her hands on the condensation making a name appear in the blur. The same name she'd been writing for the past 3 years. She never got tired of it. The letters just seemed to come naturally to her. Outside the sun had barely begun to shine. On the far edge you could see a small ray. That was the one thing that made her smile. That ray was her hope; hope that one day she'd meet him again. Did he miss her? She hoped he did but she'd seen him on television; hand in hand with his fiance. He was one of the top businessmen in India and the media never missed a chance to capture photo of him. His fiance was gorgeous. The epitome of sophistication. She closed her eyes but kept her hand on the glass. The window was filled with his name now.
"Twinkle!" her eyes opened immediately. She brushed aways the imprints of his names in a hurried manner. She sighed as she began to walk towards the voice. She could wipe his name from the glass but not from her heart.
"Twinkle!" the voice screamed. Twinkle walked faster, noticing just how angry the voice was. As she approached the door, she breathed in. Before Twinkle could open in, the handle was jerked away and she was faced with a livid Yuvi.
"Kuch chahiye?"" she asked, averting his eyes. They would pierce her. They would accuse her for still not having accepted him.
"Tujhe pata hai mujhe kya chahiye Twinkle," he said grabbing her by the arms. Twinkle winced but Yuvi's grip didn't loosen.
"Yuvi sirf 5 baji hai. Tu so ja please," Twinkle wriggled in his hold. She didn't know why she still tried. It was their usual routine. Him shouting, her flinching and then all of it would end when he'd collapse from the alcohol.
"Kaise so jaon meri jaan? Bed thodi khali si lagti hai tere bin," Yuvi's breath was hitting her face and the smell of beer made Twinkle sick. 3 years of living with him and still she wasn't used to his ways. Suddenly she felt him getting weaker. The waves of nausea were beginning to come over him. Using as much strength as she could, Twinkle laid him down on the bed.
"Mere saath de Twinkle," even in half an unconscious state he was muttering the same nonsense but nowadays it created no effect on Twinkle. She might not have the strength to fight off Yuvi every time he manhandled her but she'd learned how to not lose herself in her emotions. Twinkle brushed away the hand that was still holding onto hers and retired to her own room. This place was her sanctuary; her safe haven. In it she'd stored a million memories. The walls were a soft pink and adorned with images. Twinkle made her way across to the drawers and pulled the keys from the small pouch above it. Gently she crouched to it's level. Pulling out one of the cabinets, she let her hand glide over the smooth surface until she finally felt a bumpy edge. A smile flew across her lips as she took out a star. It was an old star as could told be from the fraying edges. Picking it up with the utmost care, she pressed it against her chest where her heart was meant to be. Closing her eyes, she let herself be sucked into the world of memories.
Up on a hill two children, a boy a and a girl, were lying side by side under the stars. They had come up here by avoiding their parents eyes just to bask in the warmth of each other's presence. They're hands were intertwined and their eyes were fixed on the stars. Their on that hill they'd made for themselves, their own little world. It was a world, much different to reality, without pain and sadness just them and their happiness.
"Twinkle, Twinkle little Star how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high you are my diamond in the sky. Twinkle, Twinkle little Star you will always be mine," the boy sang, making an instant smile appear on the girl face.
"Twinkle main tere liye kuch layi hu," the boy said, jumping up quickly. Twinkle too got up. he reached a hand into his pocket and pulled out a star. It was made of cardboard and covered in light pink paper. There was something engraved in it The boy held it out Twinkle.
"Ek chota sa tohfa meri sweet si Twinkling Star ke liye," he said placing it in her hand. As she took it, he suddenly slipped a kiss on her cheek. Twinkle stepped back in surprise.
"Bye Twinkle," the guy shouted as he sped down the hill.
"Mat jao," Twinkle's eyes opened. Reality had successfully dragged her back into its clutches. She was back in her room, with the star clasped against her chest, Looking down at the star she read the words for the hundredth time. TWINJ, it read. It was combination of their names, a promise of a forver. She missed him now, like she'd been missing him for the past 3 years.
"Kunj," she whispered into the wind, wishing he'd hear .
