This year will certainly go down in history as the year of aamaran anshan (fast unto death). Anna Hazare got his way out and managed to extract some assurance from the Government on the Lokpal bill. Ex Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan decided to use the same weapon demanding nationwide ban on the endosulfan pesticide. And now yoga guru Baba Ramdev is the latest entry in the ever-growing list of celebrities who are keen on fasting in order to wipe out corruption from this country.
We asked TV stars if they would go on a 'fast' track to fight corruption or offer any other innovative and effective way to deal with the menace.
Rajeev Khandelwal
I might or might not fast. I may also come up with my own innovative ways. However, I must add that the entire fasting campaign has brought the country together, and has shown how media can play a positive role in tackling corruption. Any campaign, as long as it is harmless, non-violent and appealing, is good enough to deal with any issue in this country.Ragini Khanna
I don't think I will fast. Personally, I believe in self-awareness more than mass-awareness. If every individual takes the responsibility to behave properly and abide by the laws of this country, automatically all problems will get solved.Sushant Singh
To each is own, but I don't think fasting can solve the problem of corruption. There are laws and bills that people easily flout. The key to development is education. People should be educated at all levels, which will help to create more awareness amongst the masses.Ashita Dhawan
Fasting is a good gesture, but I don't think I would adhere to this option if I had to fight against corruption. I think every one should develop a sense of responsibility and avoid taking or giving bribes. There is a democratic set up in this country, which is divided into various departments, with its respective heads. If work is done properly and legally at all levels, majority of the problems should get solved. Furthermore, the need of the hour is to come up with some concrete laws to deal with corruption at a larger level.Dilip Joshi
Fasting is certainly not an option for me. You could see how Baba Ramdev made a fool out of himself. It is difficult to fight against politicians, who are not only powerful but master manipulators of laws and ethics. Furthermore, the youth has also gone too insensitive on issues that require some degree of contemplation. I think one should take the legal course of action to fight corruption and try to generate more awareness among the masses.
