AMIDST EVERYTHING
"So Ma wanted to marry you when she was six itself, Pitaji?", asked Angad, wide-eyed.
"Yes she did", said Lakshman, smiling at the memory.
"And did you want to marry her too?", asked an eager Chandraketu, excitedly staring at their father for an answer.
"W-well", stuttered Lakshman.
"He did", said Ram firmly. "But then, he went into denial about it, and decided not to accept it. Lakshman loves denial when it comes to this"
"Bhaiya", whined Lakshman.
"Lakshman", said Ram, eyes twinkling with laughter.
"Pitaji, why did you go into denial?", asked Chandraketu.
"I was young, and I didn't realize what your mother meant to me", said Lakshman, evasively. Not wanting his elder brother to tease him further, he said, "Don't you two want to know the story? Or shall I stop?"
"No no. Tell us Pitaji"
The two boys looked eagerly at their father.
"Lakshman", said Ram, in a fake stern tone.
"Bhaiya?", asked Lakshman, innocently staring at his brother.
"Wait wait. You will pay for this. Be it this yuga or next yuga", whispered Ram to Lakshman, who smiled innocently, and turned back to his sons.
Ram shook his head, and readied himself to tell the story in turns with Lakshman.
Lakshman was astounded by the speed of the change of events that had happened in the last day. Brahmarishi Vishwamitra had come, asking for Ram Bhaiya. Their father, Maharaja Dasharath had not agreed at the beginning, but after Ram Bhaiya had spoken to him, did agree. Then Lakshman had gotten permission from his parents. Sumitra Ma had immediately understood him, and said yes. Kaikeyi Ma took a little longer to convince, but knowing his dedication to Ram Bhaiya, she had agreed to send him away. Kausalya Ma, however, wanted him to be there with her, claiming that even if Ram is not there, seeing Lakshman, she would feel like she was seeing Ram.
And his father? His father was the most difficult to convince. As it is, to send Ram Bhaiya with Brahamrishi was difficult; but to send Lakshman too? Dasharath wouldn't hear of it, till his Sumitra Ma convinced him, and showed him what the two brothers meant to each other. Brahmarishi was too glad to take him in, and praised Lakshman's love for Ram, saying that that was Lakshman's salvation.
Now, they were all riding to Brahmarishi's Ashram at full speed. Finally, they reached the peak, south to which the Ashram is located. At the peak, Ram and Lakshman stood, looking down at the happiness of the Ashram vaasis. For people who were attacked by Rakshasas, they seemed happy. At the centre of the circle, they spotted four figures, richly dressed.
"Bhaiya, they must be princesses", said Lakshman to Ram.
"I thought so too, Lakshman", said Ram.
"Ram, Lakshman"
the two brothers turned, and bowed down to their Guru.
"It seems like there is someone here who is making the children happy", said the Brahmarishi. "Anyway, what are you two planning?"
"Gurudev, if you accept, I thought Lakshman and I could go to the top point of the peak, and look after any threat that tries to near the Ashram", said Ram, hands folded.
"As you wish Ram", said Brahmarishi, raising his hand to bless the brothers, before trekking down to his Ashram.
The two brothers made their way to the peak, but not before catching the swish of a yellow and blue choli.
That evening...
Lakshman was walking down the slope to go feed his horses, and get them water. He suddenly heard a scream. The scream of a woman!
"Stay away from me, you Rakshasa!", said the voice.
A woman was struggling against a Rakshasa. Lakshman increased his running speed, and reached the destination in seconds. He saw an ugly Rakshasa, advancing on the princess wearing the yellow choli, who was walking back.
Seeing the Rakshasa about to pounce on the princess, Lakshman shot an arrow at the Rakshasa's leg, making him fall down.
"Fight with someone your size!", yelled Lakshman, glaring at the snarling Rakshasa. He heard a gasp from the princess, who had now turned to face him.
Ignoring the gasp for the time-being, he met the furious eyes of the Rakshasa. He raised a challenging eyebrow at him. The Rakshasa gave a roar of fury, and moved forward to attack Lakshman. Lakshman moved forward in equal speed, and took out his sword. A fierce duel took place, causing the Rakshasa to be mortally wounded. The Rakshasa fled to the safety of his tribe. Lakshman let him escape, though knowing that this was going to increase in either the frequency of attacks or result in intelligent strategy from the Rakshasas, for which he had to go alert his Ram Bhaiya and his Gurudev. But first, he had to make sure the princess got back to safety.
He turned to the princess, only to find her eyes already on him. His breath was stolen. The princess was utterly beautiful. She was fair, tall, yet not too tall. She was the perfect eyes. But what attracted him were her eyes. Big, round eyes, almond-shaped, which were widened, and pouty lips. He knw those eyes. Those eyes had gotten his three brothers wrapped around the princess's little finger.
Deciding to have a little fun with her, Lakshman asked her, "Do you still go around hugging people, Princess Urmila?"
"Rajkumar!", said Urmila, indignantly.
"It definitely is you", said Lakshman, smirking. "No one else would get indignant when I speak the truth"
Urmila 'hmph'ed, and glared at him, crossing her arms.
Lakshman shook his head. She was still the same, yet different. For though he knew she would grow up to be beautiful, he didn't know she would become this beautiful.
"What are you doing here, anyway?", asked Lakshman. "The forest isn't that safe for women"
"I came to see Ram Bhaiya. And I can defend myself!", said Urmila, indignation rising again.
"I know you can. But that doesn't matter", said Lakshman. "Have you been trained to fight against Rakshasas?"
"No", said Urmila, understanding where he was coming from.
"As you weren't trained to fight against Rakshasas, you would not be able to defend yourself properly", explained Lakshman. "Now, do you want to come and see Ram Bhaiya, or should I escort you back to the Ashram, Devi?"
"I want to see Ram Bhaiya", said an excited Urmila.
"After you, Devi", said Lakshman, showing her the path to the top of the hill.
As they climbed the hill, Lakshman was awed at the agility of the Mithila princess. Urmila had an air of confidence, which encouraged others. Lakshman was still awed by the growth he was seeing in her. She seemed mature and childish all at the same time.
When they reached the top of the hill, they saw Ram. However, he was not alone. Along with him, the princess wearing the blue choli, and Brahmarishi Vishwamitra were present. The princess was looking worried, as if she was searching for someone.
"Sita Didi"
Urmila rushed to the princess in blue choli, giving Lakshman a startling realization. A smile spread on his face. This was his Sita Didi! He turned away from the now hugging sisters, only to see Ram Bhaiya looking at Sita Didi with an impressed look. Lakshman smirked, and filed it away for teasing his big brother later on. His eyes met his Gurudev's who was looking between both the brothers with an inscrutable face. He bowed down to his Gurudev, who blessed him.
"Ram Bhaiya!", said Lakshman, moving towards his brother.
Ram looked at him, and gestured the sisters with a look in his eyes. They turned to listen to Urmila explaining the events to Sita.
"Her imagination has toned down, I must say, Lakshman", whispered Ram, smirking at his brother.
"Bhaiya!", whispered an indignant Lakshman. "Why do I always get your mischievous side?"
"You prank everyone else, so I prank you", whispered back Ram, turning back to the sisters. Sita was giving Urmila a look, almost ready to give a lecture, but Urmila stopped her by profusely apologizing. Accepting her apology, Sita turned around to thank Lakshman.
"Pranaam, Lakshman Bhaiya. Thank you for protecting and saving my sister", said Sita, smiling at the prince whom she had considered her brother since she first met him.
"Pranaam Sita Didi", said Lakshman, almost reverentially. His eyes automatically moved to her feet. "It was my duty to save Princess Urmila. I did my duty. Please don't praise me for it"
Sita smiled at the humility Lakshman showed, while Ram couldn't help the proud, loving smile cross his handsome face, seeing his little brother's humility.
"How is it that you four know each other?', asked Brahmarishi Viswamitra, his eyes twinkling.
"We met when we were children, Gurudev", said Ram. "Lakshman and I, along with our brothers, met Rajkumari Urmila at Guru Vasishta's Ashram when we were young. Later on, Rajkumariyon Sita and Urmila came to Ayodhya, along with their parents. Our parents know them very well. In fact, Urmila had everyone at Ayodhya under her thumb, including father and Gurudev"
"Bhaiya!", said Urmila, protesting, though going scarlet.
"It's only true, little sister", said Ram, smiling affectionately at her.
The Brahmarishi was astonished to see the loving sibling bond around Ram-Urmila and Lakshman-Sita. In his heart, he wished that this was the case always.
"Let's go, daughters", he said.
"Ji Brahmarishi", said the two girls.
"Pranaam", said the two grils to the princes.
"Pranaam", siad the two princes.
Ram smiled, meeting Sita's eyes, while Lakshman and Urmila stared at each other, before they turned back to trek down.
Ram turned to see an awestruck Lakshman. He smirked. Lakshman did like Urmila after all!
"So that's how Ma and you met after so many years", said Angad, smiling widely, hearing his father talk about how his mother had impressed everyone.
"Yes", said Lakshman, feeling his smile widen, matching his son's. "Ram Bhaiya was also excited to see his little butterfly"
"Of course I was", agreed Ram. "See, Angad, Chadraketu, haven't you noticed your mother's ability to attract the entire room to her, like a moth to a flame?"
"Haan Bade Pitaji", said the two children.
"Who am I to not fall for that? The second I met your mother, I knew that she and I will always share a sibling bond", said Ram. "And that is true. Even after all these years, Urmila and I have a sibling bond as strong as Bhagwan Vishnu and Goddess Vimala"
Lakshman smiled at his elder brother lovingly.
"Then what happened, Pitaji? Tell us", said Chandraketu excitedly.
"Shouldn't you both be sleeping?", asked Lakshman.
"Pitaji, we want the story. Bade Pitaji, tell Pitaji know", said Angad, turning to look at Ram.
"Lakshman, look at them. Continue", said Ram.
"Okay okay. I will", said Lakshman.
The next day evening...
Lakshman was relaxing under the tree, yet looking around for Rakshasas.
He heard a rustling sound, and turned around sharply, only to see a girl dressed in a blue choli to step in to the area. His eyes widened, when he realised that Urmila had come.
"Princess!", said Lakshman.
"Pranaam Rajkumar", said Urmila, smiling at him.
"What are you doing here?", asked Lakshman, perplexed.
She held out blankets. Lakshman was awed, and a little angry. Urmila had come all the way to give them blankets. But, it was evening. Who knows what Rakshasas were roaming around?
He took the blankets from her, and asked, "You came all the way to give blankets, Rajkumari?"
"Yes", she said, looking adorably confused.
"Do you know how dangerous it is, Rajkumari?", said Lakshman.
"I do?"
The answer came out more as a question.
"Rajkumari, there are so many Rakshasas, and beasts here. Whom knows what would have happened to you?", said Lakshman, his anger and worry coming forth.
"I..", started Urmila.
Lakshman continued as if he hadn't heard.
"What were you thinking? What about your parents? And Sita Didi?", asked Lakshman. "Your two cousins?"
"What are you talking about, Rajkumar?", asked Urmila.
"What am I... What am I talking about?", asked Lakshman. "I am talking about you coming all the way up the hill when it is dark"
"But..",said Urmila.
"Don't do this, Urmila. Do you know what could have happened to you? I was so worried, seeing you just walk in like that", said Lakshman. "You are not going to give me such worry after our marriage"
He suddenly went silent. What had he just said? After their wedding? He turned to look at Urmila, whose mouth was agape, and a pink blush was forming her cheeks. She looked down at the ground, and looked up at him with a 'Why did you just say that' look?
Lakshman smirked, hiding his discomfort, and said, "What? You don't want to marry me now? Didn't you say you are going to marry me when we were young?"
Urmila stood there, gaping like a fish. When had Rajkumar Lakshman gotten such sharp wit? She couldn't believe it. If Mandavi heard this, she wouldn't hear the end of it.
"I just... I should be leaving now, Rajkumar", said Urmila, turning to go.
"No wait, Rajkumari Urmila. You can't go alone", said Lakshman. "Let me accompany you to the Ashram"
"Lakshman, Urmila"
Ram came in.
"Pranaam Bhaiya!", said both of them, together.
"Urmila, what are you doing here? This late?", asked Ram.
"Bhaiya, I came to give you blankets", she said, pointing at the blankets in Lakshman's hands.
"You shouldn't be here all alone late at night", chided Ram. "Wouldn't your elder sister be worried?"
"Yes, she would be", said Urmila, feeling guilty.
"Don't feel guilty", said Ram. "Return to your sister"
"Can I go leave the princess at the Ashram, Ram Bhaiya?", asked Lakshman.
"No Lakshman. I will go", said Ram.
"Bhaiya?", asked Lakshman.
"You stay here on guard", said Ram, firmly. "Come on little butterfly. Let me take you to the Ashram"
"Ji Bhaiya!", said Urmila. "Pranaam Rajkumar"
"Pranaam", said Lakshman, meeting her brown eyes. Was that disappointment he saw in them? Before he could decide, she left, following Ram Bhaiya.
Lakshman sighed.
"Then Pitaji? Then?", asked the two children, bouncing.
The two brothers exchanged looks with one another, smiling, thinking of the happiest time of their lives.
"Mithila!", said the brothers, in unison.
