CHAPTER - 3
Anokhi woke a little early than usual the next day. A continuous anticipation was brewing inside her head regarding the upcoming meeting. She knew she was well prepared, but it was his presence that made her anxious. She heaved a sigh of frustration and got up from the bed with a jerk to complete her morning chores.
After a while she found her in front of the mirror, draping a blue saree.
"Quite a gorgeous couple, aren't we?"
"P.S. Leave me! We are getting late for the opening ceremony. And both of our presence is mandatory in the cultural fest."
They were standing in front of Shaurya's Cabin's mirror. Shaurya's arms, which had embraced Anokhi from the back, were in no mood to leave her. He kept his chin on her right shoulder, making her hands envelope his from the front. They smiled at each other in the mirror.
"You know what. You look stunning everyday. But I must say that blue does some magic on you. You are glowing in this blue saree."
"Ofcourse it does mister. Afterall it's Shaurya Sabherwal's favourite colour." She grinned.
"You're my favorite." He nuzzled in the crook of her neck.
"Okay if you'll not stop your romance right now, you will surely get an earful from Tej Sir, and so will I."
She managed to sneak out from his hold and pulled his cheek affectionately.
" Let's go." She demanded while switching the lights off.
"Why do we have to?" He groaned.
"Be professional, Sir." She giggled, as they stepped out of the cabin.
"Tick" - the noise came as she inserted the last pin to keep her attire in place.
"Maybe he hates blue now." She wisphered to herself.
She quickly wiped her moist eyes and composed herself, as she took her files and made her way to SIAC.
Shaan decided to wish Shaurya luck, who was busy in knotting his tie.
"Shaurya, I'll meet you at noon straight in the meeting room. Hope you are prepared. Good luck."
"Yes dad. See you. I'm leaving."
He inserted the keys inside the car and listened to the sound of the engine, as he momentarily tapped his hands on the steering, lost in his thoughts. Finally he took off, though anxiousness never left him.
Shaurya reached SIAC in no time and entered the meeting room foremost, and started checking over the arrangements. He took out his documents and hastily ran his fingers across the pages, prepping up for the final bits.
A knock on the door gained his attention, as he darted his gaze back to the door, only to find a 'looking gorgeous-than-usual' Anokhi Bhalla standing at the door.
He kept looking at her intently for a moment, his emotions overpowering his subconscious.
"That damn blue saree." He muttered to himself, as he collected his diverted attention and came back to senses.
"Good morning." She said curtly, stepping inside the room.
"Morning Ms. Bhalla." He replied back in the same tone. "I'm amused to see you on time." He let out a chuckle, making her annoyed with his sarcastic remarks.
"It's a pleasure to amuse you. I guess it's not the first time I've done that, is it?"
A cold-war could have begun right there if only it had not been intervened by Suresh, the peon.
"Shaurya Sir. You called?"
"Uh, yes Suresh. I want you to bring me a cup of coffee. And a masala tea for madam-" He stopped abruptly at his last statement.
"Ms. Bhalla, what would you prefer, Coffee or tea?" He questioned her, pretending to be nonchalant to the fact that he still remembers her choices. Ofcourse he does, how could he not?
"Actually, a cup of tea would suffice." She smiled at Suresh, who made his exit after noting their orders.
"Whoa. Pretty cool that you still know about my preferences." She remarked with a slight smirk on her face, not intending to leave his already awkward state alone.
"Well, I'm good at remembering things Ms. Bhalla. Though I can't say the same about people. They keep on changing." He purposely stressed on the last statement, which very knowingly was directed towards her.
"Sometimes changes are good Mr. Sabherwal. People take advantage of those who are naive, you know." She replied, with a venomous calmness in her voice.
They looked at each other, helpless and enraged. Enraged at themselves, enraged at the fate.
Shaan entered the room and coughed, indicating them to end the heated debate.
"Good morning sir." Anokhi wished Shaan.
"Good morning Anokhi." He replied back with a smile.
Soon the whole committee room was filled and the meeting began.
"Ms. Anokhi Bhalla, what benefits do you think will this project do, when it is launched in SIAC?" The chairperson asked Anokhi.
"Sir, I believe that the project EAD - Economics and Development, as the name suggests, will develop and boost up the Economics branch in SIAC. We, a group of 10 economics majors will be providing incentives to the students who have opted for economics, to work in this program. And by the end of 6 months, the impressed students would have received much training to be ready to do internships in the universities listed under the project. As a result, the project will become international."
She concluded in one go.
"Impressive Ms. Bhalla. Could you please elaborate the incentives and stimulus your team would be providing to the students?" Another question popped up in the committee room.
"Sir, we will create awareness amongst them by letting them know how much advancement this project can bring in their career. Secondly we have also thought of categorizing the female students into a different group. We will be dealing with them, and teaching them how they can make their mark ahead. This way, the students would be assured and the program would be beneficial to all."
"Excellent Ms. Bhalla. Mr. Sabherwal, what is your take?" The chairperson asked Shaurya.
"Sir I believe that whatever Ms. Bhalla said is what we intend to do in this program. I'll be checking whether the duties are performed correctly or not. We shall have Ms. Bhalla as the team leader though, talents like her should lead, I believe." He remarked making Anokh astonished at his statement.
"You're right Mr. Sabherwal. Ms. Bhalla, we hope you put an extra effort so that we make this program a success." The chairperson further assigned her.
"I will be more than happy to do so sir." She accepted delightfully.
The discussion was dismissed after one hour, after all the paper work was decided and the duties were distributed.
The committee room became empty in no time with just Shaan, Shaurya and Anokhi left in it.
'Shaurya, Anokhi, I will be leaving now. I have some urgent work. See you soon. Goodbye."
"Bye dad."
"Bye sir. Have a good day."
The door slammed shut, purposely by Shaan. Maybe it wasn't a good idea, but who knows what could happen between those two. They are totally unpredictable.
"The meeting was good. What do you think?" She initiated the conversation, though her eyes were fixed on the documents she was pretending to read.
"Yes. This project is important for SIAC. It has to be a success." He replied back, lingering over the window, intentionally not facing her, to avoid her stunning 'OOTD'.
"The fact that I'm approached for this tells how important it is." She chuckled and he chuckled back in response.
"By the way, thanks for appreciating me, today in the meeting." She blurted out, closing her files and piling them up.
"You deserve that." He said, gazing back at her.
She looked at him too. Their eyes could tell how much they wanted each other.
"I guess I'll leave. See you." She assembled her files in her hand, and tried to look away.
"See you." He said softly.
She took little steps, moving towards the exit.
"Don't do it Shaurya. Don't do it." His subconscious repeated to him.
She opened the door.
"Anokhi!" He yelled.
Her heart skipped a beat.
"Yeah?" She looked at him.
"You look good today." He confessed.
"Thanks." She gave a slight smile, enough to make her dimples visible, and finally stepped out.
~
Anokhi thought of informing Shaan before leaving the college premises. Fortunately, she met Shaan in the staircase.
"I'm leaving Shaan sir. See you tomorrow."
"Anokhi did you get any house till now?"
"Not yet sir. I'm still searching."
"Actually I have a house in my mind. If you please, I could show it to you."
"Sure sir. Who is the landlord?"
"Actually the landlord is a childhood friend of mine. He is out of town but I have the keys of the house. I'll show you the house tomorrow."
"Sir.. how would I have to pay the tenure?"
"You can pay it to me Anokhi. I'll convey it to him. Let's see the house in the evening? I'll text you the location"
"Sure sir. See you then. Thankyou so much sir."
"It's a pleasure Anokhi."
Anokhi finally stepped into the cab, with a slight smile on her face, knowing that it had not been a bad day after all.

CHAPTER 4
~Anokhi~
I reach my hotel room. I freshen myself up and take out a kurta from my wardrobe. I stand in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection decked up in the saree, as I had done previously in the morning. Only this time, there is a smile on my face. My mind recalls the compliment given by him. A crimson hue seems to appear on my cheekbones.
But almost immediately the realisation dawns upon me. "Why the hell are you smiling Nikki!" I mutter, giving a frivolous rebuke to my reflection.
I quickly compose myself and change into the cotton kurta and matching pants. I get comfortable in my bed and drift into a nap.
~
A phone call breaks Anokhi's slumber in the evening.
"Hello!, Yes?" She says in a sleepy voice, eyes still not prepared to open up.
"Anokhi, It's me. I have sent you the location of the house."
"Oh yes. Alright Shaan sir. I'll meet you in 10 minutes." She said, fully awake now.
"Alright, see you!"
The call ended. Anokhi dressed herself a bit, took her bag and stepped out to reach the location.
After 15 minutes, she found herself in front of a house, which looked dull but still was spacious and clean. She pressed the bell.
Tring.
"Oh, come in Anokhi!" Shaan's voice came from inside.
She stepped inside and looked around, scanning the rooms and observing the furniture. Shaan guided her through the layout, while they both checked the electricity and the water supply.
"Wow Shaan sir." Anokhi excalimed, her eyes still wandering over the walls. "This is perfect."
Shaan smiled, looking at the contentment on her face.
"I wonder how it is so tidy, even when the landowner does not live here!" She passed another remark.
Shaan's eyes displayed an unusual nervousness at that remark. He shrugged the disguised question off.
"So, I'll let you know all the formalities of the tenure by tomorrow." He said to her.
"Sure sir. When can I shift?" She interrogated out of desperation.
"You can shift by today itself Anokhi. No troubles." He passed a smile at her.
"Today?! Thankyou so much sir. I don't know how to express my gratitude." She clapped her hands out of excitement.
"No need Anokhi. I'll send the Rickshaw puller, then you will be able to easily shift here. I'll have to leave now. Take care and assemble everything. Don't hesitate to call me in case you need anything." He instructed politely.
Anokhi's eyes moistened at his gestures. She couldn't resist and embraced him.
"Thankyou Shaan sir. You always help me unconditionally."
Shaan patted her back fondly and wished her a good bye.
~
Anokhi had had everything mustered up by the night. She heaved a sigh as she sat on the couch, exhausted but content after finding a lodging.
She thought of having a walk in the backyard, to get some swift air.
She walked around the lawn, barefoot on the grass, as she gazed at the moon light, lost in her thoughts.
A few minutes later, it started to rain, and soon the clouds poured down every drop of water they had been containing till now. Anokhi's mood brightened up, and a smile appeared on her face, as she opened her tresses up and started dancing in the downpour, too oblivious to her surroundings.
Suddenly the lights went off, breaking her reverie of joy. She took her wet body inside the house, which had become completely dark till now, after the sudden power cut. She walked around in search of a candle, still unfamiliar to the rooms of the house.
A moment later, she bumped into a solid physique and a shriek escaped her mouth.
The lights went on.
"You!" This time both the shrieks came simultaneously.
"Shaurya! What are you doing here?" Anokhi yelled, too astonished to spot Shaurya in the house.
"What are you doing here Anokhi?" He questioned back at the same pitch.
She moved forward towards him, to begin the interrogation session. Unfortunately, a piece of shattered glass, that had not been cleaned before pricked inside the gentle skin of her foot.
"Omph!" She exclaimed at the sudden pain.
"Anokhi, What- Oh god!!" He reacted almost the same way.
"Wait, don't move." He instructed forward, extending a hand to her for support. She denied his help making him roll his eyes.
He knew how stubborn she was. So, without any delay, in another fragment of second, he swooped her feet off the floor, and carried her drenched body in his arms. She became tongue-tied at the sudden turn of events.
Mil ke bhi hum na mile, tumse na jaane kyun.
Meelon ke hain faaslein, tumse na jaane kyun.
Anjaane hain silsile, tumse na jaane kyun.
His hands covered her wet waist gently, while hers swooped around his neck automatically. Their eyes didn't leave each other for even a moment.
Tu jaane na,
Tu jaane na.
He placed her tenderly on the bed, like a porcelain doll. He vanished from her sight for a moment and then came back with a box of antiseptic, and sat beside her injured foot.
He placed her foot on his lap and took the antiseptic and cotton out of the box.
"Shauâ"
"Sshh."
And just like that, he ssu-sshed her again, like he always used to do, out of pure concern.
He began applying the disinfectant on her wound, carefully wiping the blood with the cotton. Anokhi shivered at the sudden touch, and dig her nails into his muscular biceps, making him squeeze his eyes for a second.
He carried the process for a while, and when he was finished, his eyes met hers, while she was already looking at him intently.
He placed her foot back on the bed, in a position where she could be comfortable and covered her with the duvet, to provide warmth to her body. He was about to turn around, when she tugged him back with her hand.
"Shaan sir offered this flat to me yesterday. He told me that this belonged to his childhood friend, who wanted to put it up for rent. So, I agreed and told him to discuss about the tenure and formalities the next day." She explained the situation in one go, clearing away all his doubts.
"This is my flat. Dad must have decided to offer it to you as you weren't able to seek a house." He spoke softly.
She hummed at him. None of them were startled at Shaan's actions, as they were aware of what Shaan had always been up to.
"When did you buy this house?" She asked him honestly, as he hadn't bought the house when they were together.
"3 years back. I often come here to spend some quality time with myself. Or to segregate my messed up thoughts. Or to calm my anxiety down." He confessed.
"I'm sorry Shaurya. I didn't knew it. I'll move out tomorrow."
"You don't have to Anokhi. Until you find a house."
"Shauâ"
"Please Anokhi. This is not a favour. You can pay the rent to me."
"Butâ"
"Please." He kneeled down, infront of her bed. Please - just a single word. Yet it affected her heart so bad, that she couldn't help but melt in front of his gestures.
She nodded, making him know that it was an affirmation to his offer.
"Goodnight. And please change into dry clothes before you catch a cold." He gazed at her while stepping out.
"Goodnight Shaurya."
Tu jaane na
~
Shaurya was making his bed comfortable in his room, when Shaan barged in.
"Shaurya, I was thinking that maybe you should put you house up for rent." Shaan said very nonchalantly, unaware of the encounter that Shaurya had just had.
"Too late dad!" Shaurya sighed while setting his alarm in the phone.
"What do you mean by too late?" Shaan asked out of anticipation.
"I went to the house tonight dad. You should've atleast informed me." Shaurya replied.
"Oh god! I'm so sorry. Shaurya, did you meet her? Please don't tell me that you asked her to leave." Shaan said in a rush.
"I convinced her to stay dad." Shaurya replied in a little frustrated tone. "And she has decided to stay."
"Thankyou Shaurya. I'm proud of you." Shaan heaved a sigh of relief.
"Goodnight Dad!" Shaurya muttered while switching the lights off.
~Shaurya~
I toss and tumble in my bed, recalling the present day's happenings.
When I complimented her, her face lit up.
When I took her in my arms, I felt the same solace, again.
When she agreed to stay, I felt happy.
Please give a direction god. To both of us. I beg.
