there should be a law dictating that national literature is protected against abject mutilation. "shankuntla" on star one is a great insult to even common audience intelligence, leave alone intellectuals and literary aficionados who still are gagging and sputtering over it.

we have resort like setting which is supposed to be ashram of rishi whoever, who finds shankuntla abandoned by her mother apsara maneka and the father renowned vishwamitra…..the highly tacky scene shot in shadows both the parents mouthing inanities…whereas the screenplay should've opened with "gandharv – vivaha" or the seduction of maneka which would've been much more interesting and pray when were bricks and mortar in that era.

then we have the villain who wants the child to be thrown out and the rishi is sniveling and groveling and there are gaggle of modern kids with modern hair cuts milling around and creepy looking women in equally shoddy jewelry and clothing.

shakuntala_02.jpg

the whole exercise is unbelievably shoddy and without any purpose and the grown up shankuntla and dushyant have still to come but going by the promos one can see the moronic plastic modernization with make-up hair in elizabethan ringlets.

please do not distort what is sacred and imaginative do not commission work of such magnitude to people who have no love for such epics. such series need dedication, research, staying true to legend and writing which going by the first episode is not going to be there. it's sacrilege.

wonder what does one gain by doing such things and come to think of it, it was shankuntla's son who was named bharat and our country got that name from him.

preposterous!!!!

i am sure even "kalidas" will agree with us on this and he must be turning in his celestial abode.

shakuntala – monday to friday at 09 : 30 pm only on star one.

i m sorry but i disagree totally with the article...sagaras dont make their show as they wish...they do a proper check of the literature...as for costumes i think they r fine...n the area thts garden ...tht was there near the ashram...even the old shaktunala featuring shantipriya showed the same thing n dress sense...so y the hue n cry on this one...its much better than most of the stupid illogical shows today...a very refreshing serial with good actors.

Kalidas himself made major changes to the story from the Mahabharata, so why would he "turn in his celestial abode"? If anyone should be "turning" anywhere it should be Ved Vyas. He is supposed to be still alive so perhaps he should be suing the Sagars and the soul of Kalidas too! 😆

Yes the Sagars have made even more drastic changes to the story and I do not like everything they do. But then, why should we place restrictions on how these stories are adapted? They are free to adapt the story as they see fit, just as Kalidas made changes to it as he saw fit. If one wishes to learn about the original story then he/she can turn to the original text. We will be throttling creativity if we start placing such restrictions. Let them experiment with these adaptations. Who knows, maybe after 10 poor products we may get 1 good product. 😉

Of course, some day I'd like to see a more accurate adaptation of mythological stories. I'm still waiting for that but I'm not throwing a fit coz someone made a daily soap out of the story. 😊 Live and let live I say. 😉

Shakuntala is a serial with a very fresh look and is shown as a beautiful love story....evn all the actors r really gud looking.
it has been made in the way to suit the taste of the now generation. after all it is a serial to entertain us which it is doing fully.
the settings r quite pertaining to the orginal story....floral jewellery, jungle, animals and birds all remind us of shakuntala and dushyant.
the serial is all about the eternal love story between shakuntala and dushyant wrapped in modern package....wats wrong with that?
at least we r freed of the vicious ektaa kapoor era where lots of vamps with outrageous makeups always scheming and plotting with no other aim in life.
in the era of violence and terrorism all over the world.....such entertaining and refreshing love stories r more than welcome. for once y dont we just relax and enjoy rather than finding flaws in shows which r merely there to entertain us.
most of us know the story of shakuntala....so lets not put the burden of teaching on this serial.

Not all is agreeable whats written in this article
When Mahakavi Kalidas can deviate so much from whats mentioned in Adiparva of Mahabharata then why can't Sagars deviate on the given topic.
Abhigyan Shakuntala of Mahakavi Kalidas is not the original script . It has a lot of poetic imagination of Kalidas, like the curse which Durvasa utters is not a part of Adiparva/MBH

First of all 'Bharat' is not the original name of son of Shaku n Dushy. Its Sarvadaman. He earns the title of 'Bharat' which means 'nourisher' he is a very illustrious and a democratic king who dares to appoint a commoner( Bhumanyu of Bharadwaj gotra) as his successor .
and its highly disputed as to after which 'Bharat' is our country named. There was one Bharat , son of jain king Rishabhdev ,its said that his name is given to our country as Bhaarat.

I am not sure he will agree instead he'll say "Yeh idea mujhe kyun nahi aaya"? "Iss 'twist' ka jawab nahi......."😉😆

its d way Sagars want to make it. even i thot everything looked so artificial, but because they r showing good acting n nice story unfolding, i have shifted my focus from settings n i m getting used to them now.
whr did this insult part came in from??!! one doesnt have to watch it if one doesnt want to. simple. lot of serial airing today r actually insults to creativity themselves. shakuntala serial is fresh n beautiful as it is.
