What Is Stoicism?

I made a prosperous voyage when I suffered a shipwreck. — Zeno of Citium, founder of Stoicism, as relayed by Diogenes Laertius, Lives of the Eminent Philosophers, 7.1.4

Stoicism is an ancient Greek/Roman philosophy built largely upon a virtue ethics framework. It was founded by Zeno of Citium in 300 BCE. Prior to founding Stoicism, Zeno was a merchant selling a dye known as “Royal Purple.” This dye was so expensive that it was used exclusively by the wealthy elite to stain their clothing, primarily as a way of signaling their wealth and status.

While Zeno was en route to deliver a batch of this dye to the Athenian market, the ship that he was traveling on was caught in a storm. All cargo was lost to the sea, but Zeno survived. This turn of events left him a penniless immigrant, homeless on the streets of Athens with no obvious financial prospects.

Faced with the challenge of enduring this new reality, and unsure of what to do next, Zeno journeyed more than one hundred miles, on foot, to visit the Oracle of Delphi — a woman renowned for her prophecies and wisdom. The Oracle advised Zeno to “take on the pallor of the dead.” After some reflection, he interpreted her advice to mean that he should “study the wisdom of the ancients.”

Upon his return to Athens, Zeno stopped at a small bookshop and, so the story goes, began reading Xenophon’s Memorabilia (a work that is mostly a defense of the Greek philosopher Socrates). As Zeno read, he was struck by the greatness of those mentioned in Memorabilia and, turning to the shopkeeper, asked, “Where can I find men like these?” It just so happened that another famous philosopher, Crates the Cynic, was passing by at that very moment. “Follow that man,” replied the bookshop owner, pointing at Crates. Zeno did as he was told. Crates the Cynic became the first of many mentors to provide Zeno with the pieces of a puzzle that would eventually lead to his founding of Stoic philosophy.

It was important to Zeno that his philosophy be accessible to all. He decided that the best way to go about it was to teach from beneath the cover of the Stoa Poikile (meaning “Painted Porch”). This porch is what gave Stoicism its name. The Stoa Poikile was a public walkway and portico connected to a marketplace where all — the rich and the poor, the free and the enslaved — went about their daily business. Therefore, all of them could, as they walked past, listen to Zeno’s radical message: anyone who is capable of reason, and who has a genuine desire to strive for a good character, can flourish. By this Zeno meant that they could aspire to live a life worthy of being lived (in other words, they could achieve eudaimonia); that no matter their gender, financial status, place of birth, or family standing, they could become good people.

What does it mean, to “become good”?

The ancient Stoics had a unique understanding of the word and concept of “good.” Contemporary peoples tend to understand and conceptualize “good” (and goodness) very differently from the ancient Stoics. Consequently, this brings us to the first of many important nuances that newcomers to Stoicism tend to overlook. And so, the ancient Stoic understanding of “good” provides us with the perfect starting point in our exploration of what Stoicism actually is.
