Sam first:
Sam is fast reaching the stage where she truly believes she is the hottest thing since .... . IMO, her insta fashion posts are about objectification and not a celebration of a gorgeous female form or self-expression. In this, I find her curiously regressive. Note, that this is not a comparison with other actresses. I can't fathom why Tollywood would have been unhappy with her YMC avatar. She rocked! Just to be clear, her plastic surgeries precede YMC. Look at her ads pre YMC (the videos, not the photos). Possible explanations I can find for her ongoing plastic surgery (someone on the net counted 10 stages in her transformation, linking it to her appearance in particular films):
a. body dysmorphia or
b. the pursuit of the resting-actress-face i.e. a default emotional expression even when one is not emoting.
She wore the same face in "U-turn" and in her instagram posts. The script in "U-Turn" offered very little opportunities for coquettishness or cuteness.
No doubt Sam is intelligent. I don't find her personality attractive anymore.
Chay.
He beats Sam hands down as public speaker when he decides to speak ... which it seems he has now resolved to do. I think it is he who has been liberated by the break-up, not Sam. His recent interviews and appearances seem focused and purposeful. He seems to have reached a point of equanimity, treating success and failure the same. Apparently, he was always like this. I didn't see it in his public persona before. Then again, I didn’t care too much.
Counterpoint to this are Sam’s very public posts of her spiritual retreat. Different strokes for very different folks.
In hindsight, Chay's big problem has been the dilution of moments of very good acting in a sea of overacting. He needed to find a way to sustain the former and avoid the latter. The break-up scene in “Rarandoi Veduka Chudham”is so good.
Here’s a thought: the general consensus is the Sam is ambitious (good!)
and Chay comparatively "lazy" / not as driven based (largely) on the number of movies they have done.
Sam did very few of her own dubbings while Chay did most of his. How much of time does dubbing take?
While Sam moved onto her next movie, Chay may have been doing the dubbing for the current movie. How does that translate into productivity?
This brings to mind a criticism of Chay’s performance in “Love Story” that his Telangana accent was not as good as Sai Pallavi’s. Contrast that with Chinmayi having to be roped in to dub for Sam because her older self had a Godavari accent. Seriously?!!
It is beyond time some perspective is brought to Sam’s talent. She is talented. Is she a great actress? No way!
I am going to make a prediction: once one strips away the PR and SM following, it is Chay who will go down in Cinematic history as the greater talent, not Sam.
I am curious to read your thoughts on this.
Loved reading your view on this.
In my opinion, Sam in YMC was pure and honest (both look and acting wise). She just lived the character and dominated Chay in every single frame.
P.S - Sam in YMC and Chay in Love Story will always be my favourites. They played these two characters with certain honesty.
Despite her success why Sam decided to go for surgeries, one after another, is a mystery. I can't help but conclude that it is nothing but her obsession with perfection. (It could be one of the reasons for their separation as well)
she wants everyone to look up to her. Through her SM account she wants to come across as some role model.
On the contrary, Chay seems completely opposite. In all his interviews so far, he has highlighted the mistakes that he made in terms of his career. Even in his earlier days interviews , he came across very straight forward and a guy who does everything with a proper preparation.
(Chay, Rana appeared in an interview together hosted by Lakshmi Manchu, that interview says a lot about him)
But he hardly opened up about his personal life, all his interviews with Rana are great source for the viewers to see the glimpse of his personality. (And definitely about Sam, he was surprisingly vocal. I guess he was very confident about his relationship) He is anything but fake. I fail to see any drastic change in terms of his personality that he has gone through recently. Yes, he comes across more focused than before and sincere in terms of his career.
Doing extra has always been his problem when it comes to his acting. I hope with Majili and Love story he has found a way to deal with that.
General perception depends on professional success. Chay, only recently has started doing the right kind of flims. He is more suitable for realistic flims than larger than life roles. Prediction will come true only if he chooses the right kind of scripts and roles. This is high time he should explore the non-telugu world. (I think Tamil Malayalam films are more experimental than Telugu) Love story has made a way for him. It will be interesting to see what he chooses to do next.
What I find tragic in this whole divorce episode that it was only recently I thought they have started changing for good. Sam, in the last few interviews, before her divorce, came across more humble than earlier and Chay looked more focused and sincere and opened up more than before. I thought as partners they might have influenced each other.
Having said that, after divorce Sam has seemingly gone back to her earlier space, read one of her Flimfare interviews. Her PR is leaving no stone unturned to flaunt her FamilyMan success and to prove that she is a superstar in south. (She has gone on spree doing everything that she couldn't do as Akkineni)
How Chay is going to react to this divorce, how he's going to channelize it, will be interesting to see. I may be reading too much between the lines but Sam looks radiant in her latest pictures, more glamorous than before ( may be because of make up) while through out flim promotion and in recent pictures he came across visibily dull.
