Redemption 282

The time was 9.00 pm when Rudran hailed a yellow cab and getting into it, told the driver to head to Brighton beach and settled comfortably into the back seat of the old Benz, whose engine purred smoothly like a cat.

Rudran looked at the driver's cab license that hung over the dashboard and noted that he was a Pakistani and his name was Shaheed Azam and the alert driver who had been tracking his passenger's eyes, politely asked " Sir, not all Pakistani people are bad or born terrorists. Most of us are good and hard-working people who just want to get on with life and have nothing to do with Islam fundamentalists and their views. I have been in America for nearly twenty years and I came here, just months before the twin towers attack and went through hell before I was pronounced innocent."

" I am sorry Shaheed Bhai, I meant no offense when I checked your identity. I do that all the time and is no reflection on you or your country. I have friends in Pakistan, good friends and I also know that most of the Pakistan citizens have no time for India and the other neighbors. It is the army that creates all sorts of problems and whips up the people into a mass frenzy and false hysteria by spreading wrong propaganda about India.
But, that is not going to stop now and will not stop for a long time to come."

Shaheed looked into the rear-view mirror and asked Rudran " Are you from India?" and Rudran answered, " No, from Israel."

The cab driver fell silent and Rudran understood from the silence that the cab driver instinctively hated Jews more than Indians and looked out and saw New York in all its night time glory, ablaze with a riot of colors from all the billboards that sold everything from cars, stocks to a good time with young busty girls.

His mobile rang and he knew it was Renu and answered " Hi baby. Why are you awake at this late hour? "

" Sleep, rest, eat and sleep again is all that I have been doing the past few months. At least if you had been here with me, then you could have kept me and Nikhil entertained and comforted us with your presence."

" Sorry Renu, just a few more days and I will be back, I promise."

Hearing all the traffic noise, Renu asked him " Where are you right now?", to which Rudy answered " On my way to the place, which I hope will be the last stop. But, then you know my line of work and the kind of people that I have to cross paths with and so, I am just hoping and praying that it will be the last halt and that I get what I have come in search of."

After Rudran finished talking to Renuka and had ended the call, Shaheed the cab driver enquired " That must have been surely someone you love very dearly. For, it showed the way you smiled and the way your face glowed while you spoke to this person."

" You are right, that was someone who I love very dearly and she happens to be my wife. We are expecting our child in a few weeks time and she called to say that, both of them miss me very much and want me back home with them."

Shaheed Azam smiled " Yes sir, nothing like the love of a woman to get you going for that is the greatest motivation and energy a man needs to start his day with."

" Sir, my wife's names if Shaima and we have two children. One boy whose name is Maqbool and my daughter is called Gulabi."

Rudran smiled and said, " Shaheed Bhai, I wish you and your family the very best."

Shaheed replied " Thank you, sir. There is nothing more beautiful in this world than seeing your loved ones sleeping peacefully and that is why I start driving every day at 5.30 am and until 10.00 pm in the night."

" That must be very tiring, Shaheed" observed Rudran and the driver replied " Nothing sir. Whenever I feel tired, all I do is look at my children's faces and I am charged and carry on working hard. I didn't have much of an education sir and so my dream is that at least my children should do well and achieve great things in their lives. That is enough for me sir and for that, I hope to drive until I drop dead in this cab."

The cab pulled into Brighton beach and Shaheed stopped the vehicle and turning to Rudran " Brighton Beach sir, any particular address sir?" and Rudran replied " One moment, i am just checking the google map for the exact location of the street that I need to be" and tapped a couple of times on the screen and saw that the address given to him by the Russian mafia man before dying was just two streets from where they were and could be reached in a relaxed ten minute walk.

Getting out of the cab, Rudran stood and casually took in the nightlife and also the generous scattering of Russians all over the place and asked the cab driver shaheed " How much do I owe you? " and shaheed ending the trip, glanced at the meter screen " That will be 40 dollars, sir."

Rudran took out 40 dollars and handed it to Shaheed " this is for the cab" and then placed a thick wad of notes in shaheed's hand " and this is a small contribution for the future of your children from my family."

Shaheed hurriedly looked at the thick wad of notes " Sir, but, this looks like nearly 10,000 dollars sir. Sorry sir, I cannot take so much from you sir. Please keep the money and spend it on the child which is due any moment."

Rudran smiled and gently pushed shaheed's hand away and the cab driver felt like he had just been touched by a bolt of electricity for he felt the surge of energy rushing from the stranger into him and looked on stunned by the stranger's gift and listened as the stranger spoke " This money is from
well-meaning friends of mine who want to do some good and who I met just a little while ago. They will be very happy to know that their money is in the hands of a good man and whose children will benefit greatly from their contribution."

Shaheed was too stunned to react or say anything and just mumbled " Sir, I will pray to Allah to bestow his blessings on you and your family and you will always be remembered in our daily prayers. Thank you so much sir and I hope that your work is successful tonight."

He gently touched his right hand to his forehead and whispered " As-salamu alaykum "(peace be upon you) and Rudran returned the greeting by saying " waalaykumu salam " (and peace be upon you) and turning away quickly walked into the lights, leaving behind shaheed the cab driver, who thought to himself " Was that an angel sent by Allah himself or was it Allah himself who came to bless me with this gift of money."

They walk among us, angels and gods, taking the forms of our loved ones for in the end they are messengers and our guardians who are always besides us in form and in thought, reminding you that even though God could not make it, he has still sent you his staff members to look after you and help you.

The boy who went into the dark and came back as light.

Mortality, the mortal nature of who you are, is the basis of all fear. If you were not mortal, there would be no fear in you because even if you were cut into pieces, you would still not die. But what is there to be afraid of? Death is a wonderful thing; it puts many things to an end. Right now, because of the way you are, you may think it is a terrible thing, but if you were to live for a thousand years, you would see death as a relief. If you are here for too long, people will wonder when you are going! So, death is a tremendous relief; it is just that it should not happen untimely. We do not want to fall dead when we are still able to create, contribute and make things happen.

The dead bodies of birds, insects, dogs, and human beings are just soil being put back to the soil. It is not some great drama; it is a natural process. What you picked up you have to return and recycle. You may attach much significance to your birth, life, and death, but as far as Mother Earth is concerned, it is just recycling. It pops you out and pulls you back in. You may assume too many things about yourself, but what you have gathered you must return, it is a good habit. Whatever you take from anybody must be returned at some point. Death is a good habit; believe me. Sadhguru, Jaggi Vasudev

Raman stood staring down at Vijay's handsome face, ruined by death that had come calling in the shape of a bullet. Without even realizing it, Raman gently swept away the thick, strand of hair that lay on his forehead and tenderly pushed it back and whispered, lovingly " I am sorry, my little brother. I am sorry that I could not be there when you most needed me and when death came so untimely for you and for your lady friend."

The tall turbaned Sikh, stood in the shadows and away from the reach of the bright light, watching Raman's every movement and keenly listening to his every word.

Raman slowly bent closer to Vijay and the tears that came from the wound in his soul, fell heavily like raindrops on his dead friends face and trickled away carrying with it, traces of blood that had clotted on his cheeks and he swore angrily and bitterly " I will not stop Vijay and I will not hold back anymore, not until I have finished with the bas***ds who were behind your murder."

The Sikh who was quietly watching Raman was stunned when the subject of his investigation turned suddenly and leaning against the metal table that held the late Vijay stared at him and roared " Don't you think that you have wasted enough time trying to know me and my motives and also my involvement in this murder that you are investigating. Come closer and look into my eyes and see my soul shining and then you will know who I am and that I am not the person you are after and most definitely not the person who murdered his own friend and his first love."

The only response, from the tall, elderly Sikh was a hint of a ghostly smile and then he slowly walked towards Raman and now both stood in the light, facing each other and seeing each other.

The stranger offered his hand " Mr. Raman, I am General V.K.Singh, Additional secretary, office of joint operation, RAW."

Raman shook hands with the general " Since, you know my name already, then I am quite sure that you also know my entire life history. But, if you still have any doubts, then ask away and I will answer them as best I can."

General V.K.Singh thought for a second and then asked Raman " Someone else in my place may have asked many questions but as for me, I am going to ask but just one question and which is the most important question, right at this moment."

Raman calmly waited and seeing the V.K.Singh's hesitation spoke " What was the reason and purpose behind the last call that Vijay made to me, just before his death? "

General V.K.Singh nodded and acknowledged Raman's words " It is no wonder that you are one of the top lawyers in Chennai working for one of the most highly rated brains in the business."

Raman waved his words away " What I just said was by no means a great observation on my part and any criminal lawyer or even a layperson with average intelligence would have thought that and said the same."

He moved closer to General V.K.Singh and with an unwavering stare " I will help you with this case but on one condition sir," to which General V.K.Singh without any doubt say " Okay, Mr.Raman, I accept and I hope that you are what you appear to be and that is an honest man and will hold true to your name."

" I will, but before that, I need to know when you will release Vijay's body and also promise me that you will help me take it back to Chennai quietly, very quietly."

General V.K.Singh stared at Raman " so many demands and yet I will fulfill them, young man, for I know that I can solve this case only with your help and that too with your total agreement and co-operation."

He turned slightly and both the army doctors ran to his side and looking at them, " Gentlemen, I want mr.vijay's body processed as fast as possible and readied for release to his family, tomorrow morning. That is not a request but a command."

He then turned to Raman who held up his right hand " please just give me a moment while I go and check on Vijay's sister Kavita and then I will come back and we will talk in length."

Kavita saw Raman through the glass doors and stood up and coming out, he told her " Kavita, there are some things that I need to talk and work out with the doctors and the other officer. It will take some time, so, I think it is better that you go wait somewhere else rather than this morbid place which will keep reminding you of Vijay."

" Ram, do you think me being somewhere else will take my mind away from Vijay. No way, not until I have breathed my last breath will I forget my brother."

She looked with intent at the man who stood inside, talking with the doctors and told Raman " I will be here, right here and will wait until you have finished with your work. Don't worry about me for I have Corporal Rajeev here for company, and for my protection."

Raman gently held Kavita by her shoulders " you, really are a very brave woman and I am very proud of you and I am sure that Vijay is feeling the same about you."

Our dead are never dead to us until we have forgotten them. George Eliot

Redemption 283

This prelude in itself is a foundation for an epic story, that may come to life, sometime in the distant future on this forum.

Valentina was whispered to be 70 years old and yet she did not look a day over 30 years and this was the most popular subject of discussion among her regular clients and visitors who had been coming to her for advice on their stars and fate. Many of her women customers had begged her and constantly kept offering her, huge sums of money to make her tell them the secret of her youth. But their efforts were all in vain. For, Valentina just smiled her angelic smile at them and whispered in ghostly tones " Child, the price you will have to pay in return is very huge and I don't think that you can afford it", and sent them on their way.

But, rumors had it that the famous Hollywood actress, Sylvia Morgan had been secretly helped by Valentina for the aging actress who had been down and out on her way out to oblivion had suddenly come back with a hit and after that there had just been no looking back, for her career hit the sky and even above it. Sylvia Morgan had come back more beautiful than before and had then boldly proceeded to act in a few nude scenes that had her co-stars going ga-ga over her shapely body, skin and her young and bouncy breasts.

And to add spice and hurt to all the other aging and jealous actresses in Hollywood, a very famous plastic surgeon had gone on prime time television and had declared that, Sylvia Morgan was all natural and Botox-free and that she had not visited him in over a decade.

Hounded constantly by the press and Television reporters, Sylvia Morgan had finally confessed that it was just a new secret health routine and an Indian diet that were behind her beauty and rejuvenated health.

She was the owner of the most famous Tarot and palm reading center in New York, which carried her very own name and people thronged to her for help and advise on how to ward off bad luck and evil spells cast on them by their enemies and very often by their own friends and family members.

But, all the reading and healing were done strictly by appointments only and only after a 10,000 dollar deposit had been made into her account. Valentina ran a very strict and legit business and even though she had been investigated many a time by the IRS and other Govt agencies, nothing bad or illegal had been uncovered in her place of work and finally she had been left alone with the Govt people telling everyone who cared to hear them that " The gypsy was making filthy amounts of money just by holding out hope and hocus-pocus illusions for all the rich people who flocked to her."

Brighton Beach, New York was a place meant mostly for Russian Immigrants and their businesses and it was strange that a Gypsy could run a Tarot place right amidst them and yet she had been doing so and for many years now.

There had been some trouble associated with her when she had first arrived in Brighton beach when a few local Russian thugs tried to muscle in on her earnings and demanding protection money. Strangely, those men and their entire gang went missing over the next few days and after that, Valentina had been left alone and nobody had ever bothered her again.

There were two reasons for her power and why people feared her and the first reason was that she was not an ordinary gypsy but a powerful witch and the second reason was the scarier one and that was, she was being protected by her only son who just so happened to be the scariest Russian mafia leader in the world and his name was " Boris Vanya."

She had given birth to Boris, very late in her life and although people whispered that she was 70 years old, Valentina, in fact, was nearly 100 years old. She had been a virgin all through her life and she had been nearly 60 years old when Boris's dad had raped her and had nearly killed her.

Mishka Pavlo, the man, who through his seed had given her womb a son, Boris Vanya had died a few days later although his death had not been in vain for she had sacrificed his life before the Goddess of Death, Kali and had purified herself and had gotten back her powers. She had planned the same with her son, Boris when he began to fill her stomach but then, her powers had warned her not to kill her child for fate had its own plans for the soon to be born Boris.

What? Kali, Goddess Kali being worshipped by a Russian gypsy witch, you will think and scream aloud.

Yes, our own Goddess Kali was and is the deity of the so-called Gypsy people who actually prefer to be called
" Romany, Roma, or Romani" and their story began with the Ancient civilization of Mohenjo-Daro, nearly 5,000 years ago.

The Romani people, once known as "gypsies" or Roma have been objects of both curiosity and persecution for centuries. Today, some 11 million Romani, with a variety of cultures, languages, and lifestyles, live in Europe and beyond. But where did they come from?

Earlier studies of their language and cursory analysis of genetic patterns pinpointed India as the group's place of origin and a later influence of Middle Eastern and Central Asian linguistics. But a new study uses genome-wide sequencing to point to a single group's departure from northwestern Indian some 1,500 years ago and has also revealed various subsequent population changes as the population spread throughout Europe.

To begin the study, a team of European researchers collected data on some 800,000 genetic variants (single nucleotides polymorphisms) in 152 Romani people from 13 different Romani groups in Europe. The team then contrasted the Romani sequences with those already known for more than 4,500 Europeans as well as samples from the Indian subcontinent, Central Asia and the Middle East.

According to the analysis, the initial founding group of Romani likely departed from what is now the Punjab state in northwestern India close to the year 500 CE. From there, they likely traveled through Central Asia and the Middle East but appear to have mingled only moderately with local populations there. The subsequent doorway to Europe seems to have been the Balkan area, specifically Bulgaria from which the Romani began dispersing around 1,100 CE.

Every evening, just before the sunset, plunging the world into darkness, Valentina sat before the small figurine of her ancient Goddess and meditated, chanting powerful Sanskrit shlokas and mantras and so, she sat in meditation and closed her eyes and immediately a sense of foreboding filled her soul.

She had been sensing a strange fear of something that the goddess had not yet revealed to her and so she had waited patiently for her visions to guide her as to what the future held in store for her.

Valentina, opened her eyes and stared hard at the goddess and watched in panic and fear as the sword fell from the goddess's right arm and next fell her trident from her left arm and she knew instantly that something terrible was going to happen.

Getting up quickly, she ran to her tarot table and whispering her son Boris Vanya's name, began pulling out cards and placed three of them face down on the table.

It was dark outside her place and inside, she sat at the tarot table with just a few candles burning away around her.

Valentina's fingers shivered in fear as she reached for the first card and turned it so that it could show her what it held and she swore the moment her eyes fell on the card for it was the Knight of Swords.

The Knight of Swords shows a young man in his armor riding a powerful white horse into the midst of a battle in the distance. The white color of the horse symboliZes the purity of the intellectual energy that motivates the rider. The sky behind him is filled with storm clouds and the trees are tossed wildly by the wind. The horse's harness is decorated with images of butterflies and birds and the knight's cape is also decorated with birds. He charges forward with great momentum and apparently without any regard to the dangers he may encounter

Valentina knew what the next card would be and just to confirm it, she reached and turned it over and the card lay now facing her and it was the Four of Swords.

The 4 of Swords is the card of stillness. This card predicts a time in your life when you feel as though everything has paused. You will feel as though everything in your life has come to a complete stop. The plans which you have made previously will not come to fruition. Projects will not get finished and work will not be done. You will not want to spend time with other people during this time; you will choose to or will be forced into isolation.

Valentina knew without any doubt what the final and third card was and she got up and ran towards where her mobile phone was and dialed a number that only she had and was meant only for her and her son, Boris Vanya.

Boris answered after 6 rings, but not in his usual, scary and creepy voice for his voice strangely was tinted by a hint of frustration and fear.

" Mother, I am very busy right now. I will call you later."

" Boris, Boris, Please don't end the call for I have something to tell you."

Boris fell silent for it was quite unusual for his mother to sound so vague and panic-stricken and sensing that all was not well, replied " Okay mother."

" Boris, listen to me. You are in grave danger. The cards just revealed that something is approaching you and it could be
life-threatening to you and your men."

Boris Vanya knew his own strength and weaknesses and also knew how powerful a witch, his mother was and that she was not one to panic or lose control. So, it would be wise on his part to heed her words and not throw caution to the wind.

" Okay mother, I will take steps to protect myself. Thank you for calling me and warning me. we will speak more tomorrow morning. Good night mother."

Boris Vanya, the most dreaded Russian gangster waited a few moments for his mother Valentina to say something, wish him a good night and when none came from her, he asked her " mother, mother. what is it, what is going on?"

In Brighton beach, Valentina stood holding the phone and felt the strong energy waves of the man who was casually approaching her Tarot place and she whispered to her son " I am sensing the danger approaching my place. Let me call you back after I find out more."

Valentina slowly made her way back to the entrance of her place and found a tall, lean man with his back to her standing and staring at a painting of Goddess Kali that hung on the wall and somehow sensing her presence, without turning around spoke to her " what are the chances of finding this ancient painting of the goddess Kali and that too in a Tarot place in Brighton Beach, New York?"

The man turned and looked at her and Valentina immediately realiZed in her soul that this was the danger that had come for her son and with a smile masking her thoughts and fears welcomed the man " Welcome stranger, I am Valentina."

The man smiled " I am Azrail Binyamin."

Valentina smiled " Stranger, from an ancient land. Even more ancient than the land, whose name you carry and yet the meanings of all your names is the same and stands for one thing and one thing only."

She came closer to the stranger and looked into his eyes that sparkled with green lights and asked him " What is your real name stranger for you have come from the land of the goddess that I and my people worship."

" I am Rudran."

Valentina looked at him confusedly " Usually, people go " My name is so and so and it is strange that you introduce yourself thus."

She took his hands and looked at his palms and after reading them for a few moments, looked at him " Who are you, stranger? what are you? For you do not walk alone, as another walks along with you in your shadow casting his own shadow with yours. Where is he, this other person who I sense but cannot see?"

Rudran looked at her calmly and then suddenly turned his palms and now it was he who was holding Valentina, who tried hard to wriggle out from his grip that felt like coils of death around her soul.

The stranger looked at her with a curious smile and closing his eyes for a second, threw his mind and entered hers and stepped back slightly startled and whispered " You are his mother. The mother of the man, I have come in search of " and Valentina stepped closer with a loving and a pleading look and then with a speed of a snake striking at its prey, pulled a long, thin knife and plunged it into Rudran's chest.

But, Valentina saw to her shock and surprise that the man moved faster than her and caught her hand which held the knife meant to kill him and then spoke in a slightly different voice " You just asked where the other shadow was and so here I am and let me introduce myself to you. I am Bhairav and I am not Rudran and unlike him, I don't judge but only execute."

Saying this, Bhairav, effortlessly twisted Valentina's hand that held the knife that had been meant to kill his brother and pushed it in anger and the long steel pierced her chest and sank deep into her heart and she sank to the floor dead and still holding the knife that lay buried in her chest.

Bhairav whispered " Rudy, I am sorry that I had to put you to sleep for you would have hesitated to do what I just did and that would have been the end of both of us. Sorry, kid brother for i cannot let that happen. Not now, not ever and definitely not until our work is done."

Genesis

Their bond was forged in the darkness of the womb. Their love began with their first heartbeats and they heard each other and sensed each other. They lay facing each other and mother nature etched every part of them and shaped in the exact mold as the other. Their very souls were connected all though they were in different bodies and although they were not conjoined twins.

He was feisty and adventurous while he was calm and rarely moved. One kicked while the other lovingly stroked his foot and touched his face. Thus where their bonds made in the atomic level where god bathes each new life with his powers and blesses them with his breath.

They were inseparable and always stayed close and never from each other's eyesight. He as in the womb took the first step while he watched and followed two steps behind his brother. They grew fast and they spoke their own language of gibberish words that others could not understand and they also spoke in their minds.

They were like two stars in the house and they shone brightly where ever they went and it was one in the front and the other one step behind him. He didn't mind being his brother's shadow for his brother shed light on him even in his shadow.

Dear friends,
I could not post a chapter yesterday, like i have been regularly doing for many a year now, for i have gotten busy by taking up work in a Television serial.

This serial is called " Kalyana Parisu", and airs on Sun tv, daily from 2.30 PM to 3.00 PM.

So, coming back late from shooting is taking away most of my energy , leaving behind nothing for our stories.

But, when time permitting, i hope to write and post and continue onwards with our stories.

I share with you, a link of my entrance in this serial and please do not be shocked with the character or its age.

I have always stated that an actor has no image and should boldly take up any roles that he likes, regardless of its shade or age.

Like a flowing river, what has gone will never come back. Quote from Ramayana

General V.K.Singh, Additional secretary, office of joint operation, RAW and Raman sat in a small cabin, facing each other. One sought the truth. The other was truth itself.

V.K.Singh looked at Raman " This investigation of the deaths of both Poornima and Vijay Bhaskar is being personally handled by Prime Minister Modi himself and let me tell you that, he is not a man to be trifled with and not someone who you want to mess around. The people behind this horrific crime will come to a bitter end, one way or another. Mark my words, Mr.Raman."

Raman stared at V.K.Singh and smiled sarcastically, which prompted the General to ask him " Something funny in what iI just told you? "

" Funny is not the word that I would use. Hilarious. Yes, that word better suits this investigation and many that have been carried out over the years by your agency and other agencies of a similar nature."

V.K.Singh was a man used to discipline and respect and was not used to being talked down or mocked and yet he knew very well that this advocate from Chennai was the only link and the last link that might help solve the murders of Poornima and Vijay, although his sole interest was on Poornima for she happened to be the niece of defense minister, Nirmala Sitharaman. His first priority was Poornima Sooryanarayanan and it just so happened that Vijay Bhaskar was killed along with her.

Raman smiled " Be honest about it sir, you wouldn't be here if it had been only Vijay who had been murdered and you are here just because the lady happens to be highly connected."

V.K.Singh wearily " You are a smart man and you know and are aware of everything. That being the fact, you should understand that I am just a cog, a spoke in the wheel that goes, rolls on wherever I am sent to by my superiors and in this case, it just so happens to be the Prime Minister himself."

Raman's gaze was unwavering and remained inscrutable for V.K.Singh who was at a loss as to what he was thinking and for the first time began to feel that he was totally outmatched in this game of cat and mouse and decided that it was time to use some force and authority to scare the young man.

" Mr.Raman, this case is now linked to national security and I can use that alone and take you into custody for investigation and keep you there for a long time."

Raman slanted his head " You can try and maybe you might even succeed but will that bring you closer to catching your accused. You might arrest me but then you will not get a word out of me and that means kissing your investigation, goodbye."

V.K.Singh cursed softly and removing his glasses, stared in defeat at Raman " Then, what do you want me to do? what do you want from me?"

Raman leaned forward " Sir, I am the last person Vijay spoke to before being killed. But, I was in Chennai while the murder happened in Delhi. So, no court will grant you custody of me for just a phone conversation and to top it, Kavita is here with me and her father, a very popular minister who will affirm my close bonds with them."

" Okay, okay. I admit that we have nothing on you to link you to this investigation. But, you know something. Something, that might be just the clue we need to solve this murder and arrest the people behind it."

Raman leaned closer and glared at V.K.Singh, " If you cannot arrest me or take me into custody, knowing very well that I was the last person to talk to Vijay while he was in the car with Poornima, then how will you even arrest the people that Vijay and Poornima were following which I am sure was the reason for them both being murdered."

" What? Vijay and Poornima were following somebody, who, who were they, Raman?"

Raman leaned back into his chair and took a sip from the water bottle that was on the table and then calmly folded his hands and looked at his watch.

V.K.Singh's blood pressure was slowly rising and he tried calming himself by taking deep breaths, which prompted Raman to tell him " Just asking a few questions is driving you mad and making you want to climb the wall. Now, imagine what it must be like for me and for Vijay's family who has just lost their most beloved soul and try to think how angry and upset we must be feeling at this point."

V.K.Singh began to smile and the redness in his face began to clear and he looked at Raman with even greater respect and said " No wonder that your skills as an advocate are so highly spoken of."

Now, he relaxed totally and he too folded his hands across his chest and in a very soft tone told Raman " Talk to me for I am now ready to listen. Really listen."

Raman leaned forward and V.K.Singh could see the tears in his eyes glittering like diamonds " Tamil Nadu home minister Vaidyanathan and Santosh Bhanwari Lal."

V.K.Singh nearly jumped out of his seat " Santosh Bhanwari Lal, the bas***d. But, what was he doing there with a minister from your state?"

Raman bit his lip " If I am not wrong, trying to fix a killer to end my life."

" To kill you. But, why kill you? What does the minister have against you, Raman?"

Raman got up slowly and looked down at the investigating general " For that, we need Kavita here for the story starts with her and her family and their rivalry with minister Vaidyanathan."

Raman left General V.K.Singh, Additional secretary, office of joint operation, RAW for a few moments and then returned with Kavita.

Raman waited for her to sit down and then looked at V.K.Singh " if you can patiently listen to what we have to say and then listen to what I have planned, I promise you that you will have enough grounds to arrest both of them and solve this case successfully."

V.K.Singh eagerly " okay. I am in. What do you want me to do?"

Raman began to speak and he spoke in detail, outlining exactly what he wanted and how he was going to go about it and the day wore on."

Redemption 284

Boris Vanya heard his mother Valentina's words clearly and they echoed in his mind, again and again, long after the call had ended and his animal brain and instincts woke up screaming and from that moment on, order descended into chaos.

Order. Yes. When the late chief minister Jayalalitha was still in power, there was order. What followed days after that was chaos.

When the late MGR was in power, there was a total order which then turned into utter chaos with his death which then resulted in Governor's rule in the state.

I cite these two simple and familiar examples to describe what order and chaos are.

But then, both states exist in us too in varying degrees. An order is when we are calm and collected in any given situation. But chaos rears its ugly head when we are put under pressure and duress and are made to face unnatural situations that we had never been exposed to previously.

Boris Vanya was one acknowledge to be one of the most powerful Russian mafia leaders in the world and also the most violent and scariest of them all and that is how and why he had risen so quickly and was put in charge of the New York branch of Russian mob operations.

But, two consecutive nights in which he had lost many of his men and in the process had also lost one of his most lucrative brothel in Manhattan was more than he could digest and now hearing his mother say that danger was approaching her, was the proverbial straw that broke the camels' back and it broke his normally calm and wise train of thought and he rose to his massive 6ft 10 inches bulk and towering over all his men, growled " It ends today. We put an end to this danger that has been frustrating us and attacking us for the past two days."

Looking intently at everybody " We are all going to Brighton beach for I have just been told that we might find the men who are behind these attacks hanging around there."

He pointed to Ivan, the youngest and newest member of their gang " Ivan, you are coming with me and we will be taking the helicopter."

Boris Vanya knew that it would take at least 40 to 50 minutes in the night traffic to reach Brighton beach and hence had decided to fly out there in a helicopter which would take him there in just five minutes and a car waiting for him would take him to the beach in a couple of minutes.

Getting into the car, he called his main man Mishka who was on site in his building that held many Billions worth of Art collection and also which belonged to the Russian mafia whose top leaders lived in Moscow.

" Mishka, Take a few men and head to the Tarot reader, Valentina's place and keep an eye out for any suspicious looking people. Check and see if the old lady is okay and call me back."

The FBI agents and the New York police who were on high alert after having spent two nights with the dead bodies of twenty or more latin, black and Russian criminals scrambled their resources and began to tail the many cars that left the compound of the Russian mafia men and all of them headed to Brighton Beach.

The FBI and NYPD were caught on the wrong foot when Boris Vanya and Ivan took off in the chopper and disappeared into the night sky.

Rudran's phone rang and Bhairav looked at it and saw it was a video call and Renuka was the one calling and answered it " Hello."

Renu took one look at Bhairav and also from his voice knew instantly that it was not Rudy and staring at Bhairav " Bhairav, why are you there?" and hurriedly asked, " Is Rudy okay?"

Bhairav slowly replied " Sorry Renuka, I was forced to come out by the situation in which Rudy found himself and yes, he is doing just fine. You can see for yourself" and saying that, ran the phone screen all over himself, so that Renu could see that Rudran was not injured in any way.

Looking at her and sensing the anxiety in her voice " Renuka, are you okay? Why do I sense a hint of panic in your voice? ".

Renu in London could see Bhairav's eyes scan the whole video and with a smile assured him " Bhairav, I am safe and there are many people around me to protect me and I am in no danger."

Both looked at each other and Renuka whispered: " Bhairav, Nikhil is ready to come out and we both want our king to be here for that moment."

Bhairav nearly jumped up in joy and excitement " Nikhil is going to be born. That is great news Renuka. If Rudy hears this, he will start swimming across the Atlantic right away."

Then he looked at her with immense affection and tenderness " Renu, tell Nikhil to hold on for a little more time and that his father will soon be there with him. I promise."

Closing his eyes, he sensed danger approaching from all around and quickly told Renuka " It is time Renu, i have to go now and help Rudy finish his work."

Placing his fingers on his lips, he gently touched the screen and said " Tell Nikhil, that his uncle loves him very much and that he will always be there to protect him and his father. Bye Renuka."

Rudran opened his eyes and found himself sitting in a small cafe facing the beach, with a hamburger in his hand and a cup of ice cream on the table before him and knew instantly that he had lost time again and wondered what had triggered this current episode.

Deep inside his mind, a familiar voice whispered to him " Rudy, you are in no danger and everything is okay to go."

Rudran smiled, hearing his imaginary brother's voice and taking a big bite out of the burger, stared at the dark waters of the Atlantic ocean and mentally began to plan for his final move on the place where the Russian mobster Boris Vanya had stowed away the paintings of his ancestors.

Little did Rudran know that Bhairav was not just an imaginary voice in his head and that he was physically present inside him as another mind and also one that was more powerful and deadly than his own.

Bhairav's presence was safely locked away in Renuka's soul who had promised the older brother that she would never reveal his presence to Rudran and she had kept it so far.

Rudran heard the screech of tires as they screamed their protest for being treated so harshly and counted two large vehicles and that meant, 6 to 8 people.

He watched quietly as nearly 8 tough looking men got out of the vehicles and ran towards the Tarot place called Valentina's and thought to himself " I was there, but I am here now and eating a Hamburger."

Shaking his head in confusion " Maybe it is time that I went through a scan like Dr.Otto Hauptmann has been suggesting and get this problem cleared once and for all."

Getting up, he slowly shuffled on into the streets and in the direction of the building that he had come for and the Russian mobsters near the vehicle took one look at him and ignoring him and went back to their vigil.

As Rudran shuffled slowly like an old man and approached the street in which the building was in, he felt his son reaching out for him and taking out his mobile phone called London and Renuka answered.

" Hi, sweetie. How are you and Nikhil doing? "

Renuka smiled " Baby, you need to hurry and get back to us as soon as possible for it is time."

Rudran felt a wave of energy sweep all over him " Okay. Order heard ma'am and will be obeyed without delay."

" I love you Renu and please tell Nikhil that his father loves him very much and that he will be there soon."

Redemption 285

Rudran whispered his son's name " Nikhil, Nikhil" and felt different and a sense of elation filled him and he looked up at the stars and spoke to his ancestors " Nikhil until now was a dream, a wish and now will be a reality. I am going to become a father."

Closing his eyes, he whispered to the dark sky that towered over him, just decorated with a small yellow jewel of a crescent moon and a sprinkling of twinkling stars " My Lords, I, Rudran seek your blessings and the blessings of the universe for my prince who will soon be here with all of us. Watch over him as you have watched over me and let him live a peaceful and contented life. "

His keen ears sensed a strange hum and whine, a rather familiar sound that could be barely discerned in the background noise as it was smothered by all the other city noises and wondering what it could be, he turned his complete attention towards the two-storeyed gray-colored building that sat alone and in solitude, surrounded on all sides by a large compound and slowly moved like the old man he was masquerading as and entered the street.

Across the Atlantic ocean, and deep in the heart of London, nearly a dozen lethally armed men moved in careful coordination and slowly emerged from their rooms and began to converge towards one point in the hotel and that was the suite where Renuka was in and guarded by Arul and Jyothi in the smaller room that served as the sitting room for visitors.

Arul came alert instantly for he had just heard a strange hum and whine that though mysterious, felt familiar and comfortable to his mind and Jyothi too was now on her feet and ran towards the door and gently knocked and hearing their queen Renuka granting them permission to enter, quickly ran into the room and checked all the windows.

Renuka's seeing Jyothi began to panic and asked her " what is going on Jyothi?" and Jyothi replied. " My queen, I am not sure what it is but both me and Arul are sure that some sort of danger is very close by."

Renuka touched her womb and felt Nikhil kick against her palm and looked up at Jyothi " He is okay and very calm. I am sure he would have felt the danger much earlier than all of us and yet shows no sign of stress or fear and in fact is kicking or doing something that feels similar to dancing."

Jyothi smiled and looked eagerly at Renuka, who nodded and the young mountain princess of the mountain kingdom of Suryavamsam, gently touched her queen's womb and felt her prince kick again and again and whispered " you are right, my queen. The prince's movements are filled with joy and are not that of fear or any signs that tell us that danger is nearby."

No sooner had she said this, the lights blinked out and they were plunged into darkness and both women waited for the generators to immediately spring into life and bring back light but nothing happened and then they heard screams and loud noises and Jyothi yelled into her mouthpiece " Arul, we are being attacked. Close the front door and step away to the sides for they might just shoot through the door. Make your stand there while I remain inside the room with the queen and the prince."

Jyothi shook her head in fear and shock for this could not be happening in such an expensive and highly secured hotel and since it was happening, it meant enemies of the highest order and training and probably their match in skill and powers.

She turned to Renuka " My queen, it will be a lot safer inside the bathroom and we will try to buy time and delay so that the Police can get here in that time."

Renuka got up and with a casual flick, turned the safety off on her Glock handgun and growled: " I have the blood of ancient warriors growing in me and like them, I too will stand and fight and will not run and hide in fear. My King Rudran might not be here but his queen is and that will do."

Even though burdened with a large womb, Jyothi saw her queen Renuka move with the speed and agility of a young fawn. Renuka took cover behind a thick dresser and pointing her gun crouched, ready to fire and ready to kill for she was not fighting for her life but also for the life of the future king.

Worried that her fears and stress might have disturbed Nikhil, she gently touched her womb and much to her surprise found him fast asleep and looking at Jyothi " I don't understand, for he has fallen asleep when he should, in fact, be wide awake and joining us in this fight for our lives by warning us and also using the powers that we all know he has in him."

By the time, Rudran shuffled his way around the block in which the building that belonged to the Russian mobster Boris Vanya was situated in, nearly ten minutes had passed and the owner of the building was already up and flying and making his way towards Brighton Beach.

Five cars, crammed with Twenty of his men were also fast making their way towards Brighton beach all pumped up to meet and take on this invisible enemy that had been waging a secret and unexpected war on them in the past two days.

Hot on the heels, were nearly ten cars belonging to the FBI and NYPD and also there were three Swat team helicopters being loaded up with nearly two dozen encounter specialists, veterans of many a battle.

Rudran saw that the building had just two men as security and wondered what had led the other men to rush to the beach and tried to connect the two events, starting from the moment where he had been talking with the Tarot reader, Valentina and to the moment where he had been sitting with a hamburger in his hand and came to the conclusion that something had happened that had prompted the other security men to abandon the building and rush out to the beach.

He slowly removed his wig and the white mustache and beard and together with the glasses he had been wearing, placed them carefully in a small recyclable plastic bag and hid them behind a bush at the dark end of the compound and all the while making sure that he was not seen by the cameras that were mounted on the walls.

Suddenly, he felt a strange vibration, a tingle of energy from all around him and not able to make sense of what was causing it, he looked in all directions with his senses on high alert and yet could not find the location or the source for the strange vibration that had come out of nowhere. Deep inside, Bhairav too went on high alert and got ready to emerge once more to protect his younger brother and two souls in one heart, went into enemy territory to get back their family heirloom and their heritage that had been lost for many centuries.

From the darkness and from behind the tree, Rudran now dressed in total black clothes, watched and waited patiently for the camera to turn the other way and counted and then waited for the other cameras to move and calculated that he had exactly three seconds to move and scale the wall and land on the other side.

Rudran counted, One, Two and then moved in a blur of speed and leaped and scaled three fourth of the wall easily and then like a cat, landed on both feet on the wall and with a mighty push from his thighs and calves, leaped even higher and over the wall and landed inside the compound and came out with his gun spitting bullets and the remaining two men that were guarding the building fell dead, with fatal shots to their heads.

Rudran quickly ran towards the entrance of the building that was totally sealed, offering no view or clue as to what lay inside and came to a halt at the large single door that was the only entrance to the entire building and looked at the large keypad that glared back at him, inviting him to touch it and then gain access to its insides.

Riffs and solos and notes of solitude

"The piano keys are black and white
but they sound like a million colors in your mind Maria Cristina Mena

Summer of 1985 was the moment when I had the privilege to meet The Bartleys and over many dark and desperate winters and through many solitary moments, I recollect the time they opened their doors to their hearts and welcomed me into their homes.

But, more than anything, the one precious gift that the house of Bartleys gave me and that too without realizing it was the gift of piano music.

Just as one stepped into the house, a large piano greeted them, politely and without sound, enquiring if they had knowledge about music and how to make love to it.

Like an abandoned lover in their twilight zone of life, the piano too stood, unused and yet ready to pour its soul and youth out to the person who could sit near it and caress its black and white keys and make lovely music.

I sometimes see all of us as that piano, but less said of that music.

Many a day, I stood on my skinny legs and tried to play the few chords that Alan had so very patiently taught me. But much to his horror and to the horror of the piano itself, the notes, the music sounded like a banshee in labor pains and screeched as if the very doors of hell had opened itself in an attempt to devour it.

That and there ended my tryst with the piano and much enlightened from that infatuation I limited myself to listening and only listening.

Wherever I am, I always pause and straining my ears, listen in ecstasy when a song slips quietly into a melancholic piano piece, transforming the otherwise ordinary song into a divine rendition.

The piano composition in the song " Unnidam Mayangugiren" from the film Thensindhudhe Vaanam is one of my earliest and all-time favorite song and probably one of the first songs that I heard and slipped into a trance, even though as a bit of dumb kid, I had no idea what was making that beautiful music.

The opening bit in the song " Bohemian Rhapsody" by the group Queen is also one of my favorites and over the years I have devoted a lot of time in collecting songs with great piano pieces.

Some of my favorite songs

Benjamin Gustafsson - Afraid To Love Again
Richard Clayderman- Nostalgy
Brian Crain- a new day
Yanni- one man's dream
Yiruma - River Flows In You
Satie-Gymnopedies
Thao Nguyen Xanh-Sad Romance

Kizhinthu Pona Kaalanigal- Oru kutty kadhai

My Red Adidas shoes have been hurting my left pinky toe and sadly I am one year too late to even attempt an exchange. Each time, I buy a new pair of running shoes, I have realized that somewhere starting in the sixth or seventh month, the shoes start showing signs of wear and tear. Funnily, the shoes i use always begin to tear in exactly the same points as the previous shoes and they are the points where my toes begin and the tiny tears on the webbing would soon begin to gape like the shark from the film " Jaws".

I had never faced this particular problem with Reebok and Nike although both in no way compare with the comfort and fit that is offered by Adidas. So, when this small tears began to materialize on my Adidas shoes which were just six months old, I put it down to my aggressive cleaning and washing of the shoes and decided that I would be more gentle with them in future. Sadly, gentle, tender did not work and finally, I realized that shoes would invariably get damaged, torn and would have to be discarded and a new pair purchased, with crying episodes that Nadigar thilagam does so beautifully.

The frustrating part of the whole thing was that the shoes still had life in them and it was only the tiny and now rapidly expanding tears that were the problem and I asked the heavens above " Ennappa, ippadi panreengale appa."

So, relegating the shoes to a life of retirement, I went back and purchased another pair of shoes and six months later faced the same problem. Two years went by and I am now on my fourth pair of Adidas Shoes and they have finally opened their jaws and I went bonkers.

Three pairs of shoes and all with tears and they glared at me in colors of Red, Blue. and Yellow and all spoke to me and I heard their voice deep in my soul.

" Sat, konjam kizhinjiruntha ennada. Nee enna, olympicla oda poriya ille ethavathu shootingku engala use panna poriya. Small tearsa thaane. Innum enga solela life irukku. Neraya kms odalam."

I looked at my shoes and the shoes looked at me and I thought " yes. Kizhinju iruntha enna. Ungala use pannaren."

Manushan, ennakulaye Ayiram ottaigal, kizhinjalgal. udambu mukkiyam ille. Athmathaan mukkiyam. Micham ellaame maya thaan.

Redemption 286

"You don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That's why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence. Octavia E. Butler

Very few people apart from Rudran in New York and Queen Malar and her children Arul and Jyothi in London heard and felt the strange whine and hum from some unknown point around them and wondered what it was and what beast or machine could be making these strange and eerie sounds.

But, Nasa's deep space network of radio telescopes picked up the sounds that were far below the hearing capability of a human and began to record and also sent out alerts on all networks.

Malcolm Andrews was still hunched over his laptop when John yelled " Malcolm, those strange sounds are back again" and Malcolm leaped out of his chair and rushed to John's table and was joined by Kenneth, Matt, and Dave.

John pointed to the huge screen in front of him and showed the sound waves that were traveling across the screen, displaying regular spikes and he looked at Malcolm " It is happening right now Malcolm, for this is a live feed that is being streamed from Nasa satellites."

Malcolm leaned over John and quickly typed in a series of codes and a software converted the sounds into larger files and then blasted out from the speakers and everybody froze in fear and excitement as the strange sounds washed over them.

Malcolm whispered " John, I hope you are recording everything" and john with a smile " From the moment, the sounds came on " and looking anxiously at his team leader " Malcolm, are these the very sounds that you heard when you were a kid and are these the sounds that led you to think that we are not alone in this universe?"

Malcolm nodded " yes" and then looked at all of them " Alone. Why do we think that we are the only life in this universe? What arrogance to even think that we are alone in this vast and infinite universe."

He folded his hands across his chest and spoke in a very calm voice that sounded very different from the way that he usually spoke in and they listened to him.

In Greek mythology, Icarus is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. Icarus and his father attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus' father warns him first of complacency and then of hubris, asking that he fly neither too low nor too high so the sea's dampness would not clog his wings nor the sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignored his father's instructions not to fly too close to the sun; when the wax in his wings melted he tumbled out of the sky and fell into the sea where he drowned, sparking the idiom "don't fly too close to the sun".

But the first attempt at flight was not by a man himself but that of a kite that was created by man, more particularly a Chinese about 3,000 years ago. That was nearly a 1000 years before the story of Icarus.
And then, we had the brilliant Da Vinci who tried designing a glider and nearly succeeded. But, it took another 300 years before Bartolomeu Laureno de Gusmao, a Portuguese tried to design a glider and then the first flight happened 80 years later but not in a glider or a plane but in a hot air balloon designed by the genius Montgolfier brothers from France.

Another, 150 years went by when the first powered flight was finally and successfully attempted by the Wilbur brothers in 1903 and after that, there was no looking back.

For, just 11 years later, planes were fighting, shooting, bombing each other over the skies of Europe in World war one and today, nearly a 100 years later, we have space crafts that have reached Pluto and a few others like the Voyagers that are nearly at the edge of the solar system and are going to leave to venture out into deep interstellar space."

Reaching for the phone, he paused and looked at all of them " And to top it all, we now have these strange sounds and signals that will surely confirm that we are not alone."

He dialed an encrypted number and on the other side, the President of the United States of America answered: " Malcolm, it is late in the night and I hope you have a good reason for calling me at this hour."

" Mr.President, sir, you put me to work to find out certain things and hence I am calling you at this hour to report to you what I suspected for we have proof. Real and tangible proof."

" Proof Malcolm. what proof and what does it prove to us?"

Malcolm replied in a very calm voice " Proof that we are not alone sir and that at this very moment the aliens that we have been after are over Europe" and glancing at the large screen " Over London sir. Whatever spaceship or aliens they are, they are right now hovering over London."

The boy who went into the dark and came back as light.
