Kumar aka sumar Moonji Kumar (Vijay Sethupathi) is a carefree youth who lives in the suburbs of Chennai and his only motto is to win the heart of Kumudha(Nanditha). Kumudha on the other hand is completely hates Kumar so as her dad (Patimandram Raja). Raja seeks the help of local don Pasupathi in order to get a relief from Sumar Moonji Kumaru's love torture. Mean time Bala(Ashwin) is another uber cool youth who is in love with hyper possessive Renu (Swathi) and also always hates his bank job, especially because of his manager (MS Baskar). The lives of Kumar and Bala meet at an accident and the rest of the things form the crux of the story.
First of all the live wire of Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara is Vijay Sethupathi. The Sumar Moonji Kumaru characterization is filled with lots of energy that is easily transformed to the audience. Vijay Sethupathi is becoming a dialogue delivery specialist and even IABK the actor continues his tremendous form in comedy. Every dialogue delivery of Vijay Sethupathi evokes good laughter in theatres.
Ashwin has also played equally well as a typical Chennai youth. The way he tackles his manager MS Baskar and possessive Renu is good fun. Other characters including Vijay Sethupathi's friend Romba Sumar Moonji Kumaru,Pasupathi,Soori,Ok OK Madhumitha,Naan Kadavul Rajendran, MS Baskar and Robo Shankar did an adequate job. Nanditha as Vijay Sethupathi's girl has did a good job and for the role is a cake walk, Subramaniyapuram Swathi looks cute as Renu and it is a good come back for the actress.
Mahesh Muthuswamy's cinematography captured Chennai city's night well and also Chennai suburbs. Editing by Leo John Paul is crisp and Siddharth Vipin's music is fit to the T.
IABK's biggest strength is the dialogues and characterization. Madhan Karky's dialogues are brilliant that almost every scene evokes laughter so as the characters. Director Gokul has also managed to have a subtle message No to drink' in the story which deserves applause. Gokul also has some hearting touching moments like how a Keralite manager gets mocked by his sub-ordinates and also a scene where Ashwin hates himself for drinking habit is noteworthy.
On the other side the film has its dragging moments that the director starts the story line only at the interval. Overall one can watch Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara for its comedy quotient which has worked out really well and also for Vijay Sethupathi's live wire performance.
Verdict : Bala and Kumar leave a good message with good fun
