A woman is found on a railway platform in a badly bruised state. In her statement, this traumatized woman, Shanti, tells the police, that she and her husband were going on their honeymoon when he threw her out of the train! Unbelievable? Renowned Dr Akhilesh Srivastava, and his wife Shanti, had been married just three weeks, earlier. So what could have happened, asks Mohnish Bahl, that Akhilesh tried to so brutally, kill his wife?

Flashback to wedding night: a very timid, hesitant bride and a very gentle and understanding husband; then subterfuge, as the bride makes a clandestine call. Amazingly loving in-laws, a bride who is already ready to please them, and the husband takes his new bride shopping. She apparently, "forgets" her handbag at a shop, and as she enters the elevator, lover-boy Rajat is there with her bag! Now we get an insight into a "real" situation.

If Shanti loved Rajat, why did she marry Akhilesh, is Mohnish's next pointed question? Why would she choose to live this 'divided' and dual life? Most importantly, says Mohnish sagaciously, she was unaware of the disaster that would befall her and her life once this double-face was unveiled. The story reveals immense pretentions, secret calls and meetings, and Akhilesh is evidently perplexed and anxious; why does his wife, who is otherwise so charming and loving, avoid any physical contact? Shanti, completely obsessed in her love for Rajat is successfully keeping up the faade. But by now, as Mohnish forewarns with his innate wisdom, while, Akhilesh who is unaware of the reality is making all efforts to win over his wife, for Shanti, her frustration and suffocation with this unseeming duality is getting unbearable.

Akhilesh plans a honeymoon to Goa; Shanti makes a panicky call to Rajat, who very obviously has some devious "scheme" up his sleeve. Next we see Akhilesh behind bars, accused of having tried to kill his wife, as per Shanti's own statement! As per his statement, once they boarded the train he went to sleep. On arriving at Goa, Akhilesh found his wife missing.

Akhilesh's parents and sister cannot believe what is happening. Mohnish emphasizes that it was impossible for them to accept that their Akhilesh could possible do anything so horrible with his wife. But then what is the truth? In a true "whodunit" manner Mohnish presents the logical options: Akhilesh found out of his wife's infidelity and in a moment of anger tried to commit a typical crime of passion? Alternatively, Shanti, wanted to get out of the impossible situation and took the desperate step?

In response to the family's protests, saying Akhilesh is innocent and that Shanti is obviously lying, the police asks for proof. They present Shanti's personal diary to the police; rather naively not having scanned through it themselves first! They are confident that Akhilesh's loving nature and the family's endearing behaviour towards her would be recorded in Shanti's own words. The uncanny twist to the tale is that Shanti's diary endorses her husband's "cruel" behaviour! Akhilesh is shocked into utter disbelief, reading the fabrications of his dear wife.

Moving into the "present" we see Rajat comforting Shanti, as he attends to her wounds! The truth unfolds with the flashback to the train to Goa. Akhilesh continues to be the caring husband; in fact the watch he found in wife's cupboard, before leaving, saying "to my beloved", he easily understood to be Shanti's surprise for him! Rajat boards the train, and conveniently has a berth right there. With very evil connivance, Akhilesh's food is laced; enough to make him go off to a deep sleep. The innocent Shanti turns out to be a very self-centred and conniving schemer, who along with her lover actually scripted and enacted the entire saga. All that glitters is not gold!

A grim Mohnish presents the harsh truths of life: what seems real is not necessarily so, and what seems unreal can turn out to be stark reality. Now the crucial advise is, what would a person in Akhilesh's impossible situation do? To begin with, is the sound warning and words of caution: when choosing to get married, it is important for both the boy and girl to get to know each other well enough; or to at least find out more about one's future partner. With a little awareness and caution, perhaps Akhilesh could have avoided getting thus trapped. But now to exonerate himself of this absurd allegation, and to clear his family's name he tries to get to the bottom of the mystery. Again, a straightforward man inevitably chooses the direct route, which in certain circumstances is not the best, especially when dealing with a wily and scheming adversary. Akhilesh directly accosts Shanti as to why she has created this entire drama, but again he is found to be in fault for "harassing" his wife in public. The police will not listen to his pleas since Shanti's act is far too convincing.

But the truth cannot remain hidden forever. Events move fast. Akhilesh accidentally finds out about Shanti and Rajat's college affair; he recognizes Rajat's face; traces them, follows them, and collects photographic evidence to convince the police. Shanti's parents confess to knowing about Rajat. And to get her away from the wastrel they arranged her marriage with Akhilesh. Tracing the events it is discovered that they lovers were secretly married 6 months prior to her wedding with Akhilesh. But then why this entire fraud? It transpires that Rajat planned the entire scenario to make Akhilesh and his family culpable for "domestic violence" and make money!

As Mohnish grievously states, driven by selfishness and greed, Shanti and Rajat almost succeeded in their nefarious plans of destroying Akhilesh and his entire family! It was Akhilesh's determination, which helped to unmask the culprits and assist the police to get to the truth. There are many laws in our country to protect women against domestic violence and ill treatment. Of course these laws are essential, Mohnish candidly emphasizes; but there are some women in society who can manipulate the law to suit their malevolent intent. According to NCRB (National Crime reports Bureau) statistics, women offenders are undoubtedly only 5 per cent in comparison to men. But at the same time, there has been exponential increases in crimes perpetrated by women.

Society needs laws for the safety and security of the citizens. But laws are not meant to be broken and twisted for personal gratification and gain. "All is fair in love and war"; maybe some people are taking this idiom much too seriously, states Mohnish with underlying anger and sarcasm. Then he gives us startling NCRB statistics: in the past year, based only on matters of "love", there have been over 2,637 murders and 21,691 cases of kidnapping. To kill or destroy anyone in the name of love that can never be justified says Mohnish with utmost gravity. He re-emphasizes that while the safely and security of women can never be compromised, one has to remain alert and cautious of scheming cheats who can misuse the law. He exhorts - we must raise our voice against injustice, as that is the only way to ensure our safety; stay happy and secure as we fight back, with Savdhaan India!
