Rang De man writes TV serial

Manasi Salvi in SatiIt's not easy being a woman.

Sati is a free-spirited law student enjoying life to the fullest. But things fall apart as the very people she considered her friends rape her.

The culprits roam free even as Sati's world falls apart.

Despite the humiliations and the stigma, Sati is a fighter. Not just does she recuperate physically and emotionally from her torture, she wants revenge.

Rang De Basanti writer Kamlesh Pandey has penned SATI.. Satya Ki Shakti, a television serial.

A veteran scriptwriter with films like Tezaab and Saudagar to his credit, Pandey says, 'It is a meaningful subject which means the power of truth. It's a unique concept for Indian television where the dividing line between fiction and reality almost disappears."

The serial is directed by Hemant Prabhu (Kundali, Koshish Ek Asha) and stars Manasi Salvi (Aashirwad, Saarthi) in the lead role, an actress who has won the Maharashtra Puraskar for her work in the Marathi film Sari Var Sari.

Sati.. Satya Ki Shakti begins Monday, May 29 on SaharaOne, and will be telecast Monday-Friday.

Televisionpoint.com Correspondent
Sahara One Television has launched a new show, Sati Satya Ki Shakti, which the channel claims is the journey of a victim who fights for her rights, challenges the decision of the court of law and attains justice, it's the story of an all women law firm who are fighting their personal & professional battles at home & at court of law. The show will begin from May 29, in the 8 pm time slot, running from Monday through Friday.

Purnendu Bose, COO, Sahara One Television says, "Sati Satya Ki Shakti is the story of today's changing times where women are speaking up not only for themselves but for others as well. This is a story about one woman's fight against the atrocities committed against other women. Above all, it sends out a message of hope that justice will prevail if women stand together in times of adversity."

After Rang De Basanti, writer Kamlesh Pandey has taken it upon himself that entertainment ought to have some substance and set out to make a point, difference to society. With the development of the storyline for Sati Satya Ki Shakti, he yet again reinforces this belief alarming the industry for a wake up call. Says Kamlesh Pandey "Sati Satya Ki Shakti is a meaningful subject which means the 'power of truth'. It's a unique concept on Indian television where the dividing line between fiction & reality almost disappears."

Produced by Percept Picture Company Sati Stay Ki Shakti is directed by Hemant Prabhu, who has directed shows like Kundali, Kanyadaan, Koshish Ek Asha. Sati - just settling in!

Sahara One cannot be blamed for not trying! It has experimented with novel subjects in the past and although they haven't raked in high TRPs, their shows have always stood out in the clutter. Be it Saath Rahega Always, Dial One aur Jeeto or Kituu; the channel has dealt with formats and concepts that have been hitherto unexplored on television.

Sati is the latest to join this bandwagon. It has a very refreshing concept - a rape victim fights back, later becomes a lawyer and then takes up cudgels for women. What the show probably lacks is proper presentation. The jump cuts in dramatic situations come once too many; the white flashes and close ups are just too predictable and the dialogues...well, they need to be a little more 'real'. Also, in question is Sati's drab attire. I fail to understand why a girl has to be in black...always! Life is all about looking at the brighter side of things! If she's trying to make a statement with her attire... then I didn't get it!

Despite flaws, Sati has great potential, but largely the success or failure of the show depends mainly on the lead, played by Mansi Salvi. Must say, Mansi pulls of the character with elan. The pain of being isolated by her family, the trauma of being a rape victim and the anguish of trying hard to correct a wrong that was done to her. Her readiness to help women to get justice is, in a way, her path to attain salvation - Mansi ably personifies the woman who strives to put her life in order.

Again, the show also makes references to many cases that have been under media scrutiny for long - the Jessica Lal case is one in question. There are many instances in the show where it sounds regressive, specially when Sati's father reproaches her for maligning the family name as a rape victim. We agree that this is not an unrealistic situation as many victims are treated in a similar fashion in the country, but here was a chance for the male member of the family to stand by his first born - agreed that the track then would've taken a different direction then, but it's time that shows like these take a stance and show 'how it should be' rather than 'how it is.'

Sometimes, however, the show manages to surprise even its worst critics when the to be husband of Sati's scorned sister (his family called off the wedding when they realised that she was Sati's sister) comes back to her and offers her his support, there is a moment of 'how it should be' and this holds the show in good stead.

There's nothing much to write about the male characters in the show. Sandeep Rajora and Karan Mehra are wasted...although given that the show is just two weeks old, there's sure to be more scope for them later on. The other characters like Dimple Inamdar and the other lawyers in Sati's company look confident enough to be in the profession they are shown to be in...but their work clothes are too jazzy for a courthouse. These are small things...but they make an impression and need to be taken care of.

All in all, this is a promising show but will do well only if it manages to repair the cracks in its canvas.Though, it doesn't t have a repertoire of big names, but has able actors and the channel will do well to keep the tracks tightly knit.....

And finally, can the show refrain from gimmicks like using the word pranam (uncanny resemblance to Sahara Parivaar's Sahara Pranam), at the end of PTCs in its episodes.

Sandeep Rajora to play lawyer in Sati

Sandeep Rajora, best known as the hassled Tushar in Zee's Kareena Kareena, will now be seen in Sahara One's soon to be launched show, Sati.

Sandeep Rajora
Sandeep will play Siddharth Raichand, who is a flamboyant lawyer with a rival firm. "He is a chilled out guy! He has the character quite like that of Tom Criuse in A Few Good Men. I am very excited about the show as it does not deal with run of the mill stories. It's an honest show that deals with thw law and is contemporary given the Jessica Lal and the other rape cases that are making headlines these days," says Sandeep who has shot only one day for the show.

The actor will sport a look similar to the one in Kkusum (and coincidentally in the Sony show he was called Siddharth too) - rimless glasses and power suits.

"Siddharth is a thorough professional and he's cut throat! He is pitted against Sati (Mansi Salvi) in the show. Initially viewers will see the professional side of him, but later his emotional side will also be explored," points out Sandeep.

The show which will go on air from 29 May at 8:00 pm, Monday-Friday, has a host of noted actors in its star cast - Dimple Inamdat, Abhay Bhargava, Rajat Bhagat and of course Mansi Salvi who will play the lead. The most promising aspect of the show is perhaps the name of the writer - Kamlesh Pandey who has written Rang De Basanti
