THE CELEBRITY - PART 92

An original story by Archana Vinod

NAINA'S HOUSE - MORNING

Roli... what's she doing here? Siddhant is in absolute dilemma. What did she see? Oh God... What am I going to do?

Roli is shattered at the sight before her eyes. Shocked, painful tears brim over quickly and roll down her cheeks. The man whom she trusted so much, the only man she has given her heart to, the man whom she loves so much... has BETRAYED her.

FLASHBACK SCENE

ROSID'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Siddhant enters their room and finds Roli folding a stack of clothes with her back towards the door. She doesn't see him. However, her movements seem a bit out of line, as if she's doing it just for the sake of doing it.

Without a sound, he tiptoes up from behind, wraps his arms around and startles her. "Gotcha!" he laughs.

Though startled, she doesn't laugh. She doesn't even smile. Siddhant notices that she's not too good. Gently, she tries to take his hands off, but he doesn't let go.

"Wow," he turns her around, "looks like a thunderstorm is headed this way."

"Hmm," she mumbles and looks down, "let me just finish this."

"Hey," he lifts her chin, "what's wrong?"

She looks away, worried that he might read her mind. "Nothing," she says in a low voice, "just tired." She tries to move away, but Siddhant grabs her by the waist and pulls her close.

"Can you look into my eyes and say that?" he asks.

She looks up, startled.

"Tell me," he says quietly, "what's it?"

She looks down again and absentmindedly takes a fist full of his shirt. "You'll laugh at me if I told you," she says in a childish voice.

"Let me think whether to laugh or no after you're done telling me."

"That..." she crumples his shirt nervously, "I'm just... scared."

"Scared? About what?"

"These celebrities na," she begins as she gently adjusts his collar without looking into his eyes, "most of them... just change..."

"Change? How?"

Roli is very nervous now as she fumbles with his collar and so on. Her voice is barely audible. "They get into drinking... affairs... they forget their families..."

"So?"

"You..." she gulps down the lump in her throat, "won't be like that na..."

"I have to be," he replies, "it's part of the business."

Roli looks up at him, startled. Her hands slip off his shirt in shock.

"What?" he asks in a very serious tone, "I thought you knew what we were getting into..."

Roli is speechless now.

Siddhant bursts out laughing. "God! Just look at your face!!!"

Roli feels foolish now. It was a gag! For a moment she thought that he was serious! She tries to smile at his joke, but shameful tears spring up instead.

"I don't believe you Roli," he laughs, "do you really..." His laughter fades away. She avoids his gaze and begins to walk past him, but he locks her back with his finger. He wraps his arms around her once again and snuggles gently into her neck. "What's this yaar," he says quietly, "why are you thinking crap? Do you really think I'd leave such a beautiful wife and go after other females?"

She nods her head and wipes off a tear, no.

"Then?" he raises his eyes questioningly, "I swear Roli, next time I catch you saying that, I'm going to slap you hard. Agreed?"

She doesn't respond.

"Yes or no?" he asks seriously.

She quickly nods her head.

"Fine," he replies with a broad grin, "just kidding. Give me a smile now."

She hesitates, but finally gives in to him.

END OF FLASHBACK SCENE

BACK AT NAINA'S HOUSE

My worst fear has come true! Roli staggers back onto the wall in utter shock and pain. Her head reels. He assured me that he would always be the same! That he wouldn't go astray, but today... She begins to heave as she struggles to contain herself.

Siddhant unplugs himself off Naina and gets over to Roli. "Roli," he begins in a shaky voice as he tries to hold her. But she cringes. "Roli... what you saw is not real. Let me explain..."

"Y-you p-promised..." she stammers, "y-you said you w-would n-never change..."

"I'm still the same," he assures her, "trust me... please..."

"But you have been c-cheating m-me all along..."

"No," he begs and takes her hand in his, "I swear yaar, I would never..."

The intensity of her own words hit her hard. Siddhantji... CHEATED ME... She crumples down to her knees as she begins to break down into a loud sob.

"Roli... no... please..." Siddhant trembles all over. He goes down on his knees with her and tries to hold her reassuringly. He can't think straight. He can't breathe! He is in a state of panic. Roli's sobs are breaking his heart.

Naina leans back onto the couch and enjoys her work. It was tough, but in the end it's paying off well.

"Roli... please... stop crying... just listen to me... she was the one who--"

But she pushes him off, jumps to her feet and stomps out of the door.

"Roli!!!" Siddhant begins to follow her and almost makes it out of the door, but a hand grabs him and pulls him back. It's Naina!

"We're not done yet," she pins him onto the wall with a snarl and plants a tight kiss.

Siddhant is suffocating! On one hand, Roli is very upset and she's walking off to God knows where! And on the other hand, this woman has glued me to the wall! Hey Uparwaale!

He tries to break free, but she's stronger than he thought. His hand blindly gropes around for something... anything... it gets hold off the first thing it can... Naina's tea cup, filled to the brim with hot tea!

SPLATTT!!!! Siddhant flings the hot tea all over Naina's face. She staggers back cupping her face scalded face in horrendous pain.

Siddhant doesn't waste a single minute and zips out of the door and onto the streets. He finds Roli a bit away from him. She hastily gets into an auto.

"ROLI!!!" he calls out desperately. But she neither sees him nor hears him. Her vision is blurred with her tears. Her hearing is impaired from the screaming in her head!!

"ROLI!!!" he yells and sprints after the auto. But he fails to keep up.

He bolts back to his car, gets in and tries to start it. But as luck would have it, it just won't start!!!!

THE CELEBRITY - PART 93

An original story by Archana Vinod

Siddhant puts up a frantic struggle to spark his car's engine. But it seems like someone up there is out to get him. In a fit of desperate rage, he bangs his fist onto the steering wheel. "DAMMIT!!!"

He bolts out of his car and tries his luck once again. In frenzy, he waves at any passing vehicle to stop and give him a ride, but none of them will!

IN THE AUTO - AT THE SAME TIME

The auto sputters and chokes through the crowded city streets.

Roli is a mess. She muffles her quiet sobs and struggles to keep it in. What she saw at Naina's house flashes before her eyes. Siddhantji... on Naina... kissing... passionately... How long has this been going on? He knew her for a long time! Has he slept with her before? How many other girls has he slept with apart Sanju and Naina? So what they say about celebrities is true. They forget everything once they attain their celebrity' status. They forget their families. They forget their past. They forget themselves. Siddhantji forgot me...

He knew that I was broken. He knew what he had done to me. And yet, when I walked out of there, he didn't try to stop me. At least, he could have tried to hold me back. But he didn't...

BACK ON THE STREETS

Siddhant is desperate as he tries to get through to Roli's phone. But all what he hears is a "switched off" message. "Come on - come on - turn it on - turn it on..." He tries again in vain.

Just then, his phone starts ringing. It's Prem. He hastily answers the call. "Hello?"

"Siddhant," begins Prem in concern, "where are you?"

"I..." he pauses. What will I tell him? I can't say that I'm at Naina's place.

"Have you seen Roli?" asks Prem out of the blue.

"Roli?"

"Yeah," replies Prem, "we've been trying to reach her for so long. Her phone is switched off."

"I've been trying too," says Siddhant. He hides the fact that he just met her now.

"Last evening when she spoke to Simar, she said that she's at a friend's place."

Siddhant is quiet. "Friend"? Why did she lie?

"She also said that she's not coming back," continues Prem.

Siddhant's head is boiling now. He wrings his jaw in frustration. So... does that mean she's going to her parents' place? Is she headed back to Vrindavan? Where else can she go? "Prem," says Siddhant, "I need you to keep trying Roli's phone. Inform me as soon as you get through."

"But where are you going?" asks Prem seriously.

"I'll tell you later," he replies.

THE DWIVEDI HOUSE, VRINDAVAN - LATE EVENING

Jamanlal and Meena are anxious as they wait around in the living room.

Jamanlal paces up and down restlessly. His phone begins to ring. "Hello?"

"Papa," it's Simar, "has she reached?"

"No beta," he replies, worried, "are you sure that she's headed here?"

"Where else will she go?" replies Simar tearfully. Her anxiety is obvious. "Hey Matarani! I hope that she's okay!"

"I'm not going to wait much longer," says Jamanlal, "if she doesn't turn up in the next half an hour, I'm calling the..." he stops abruptly as he sees an auto halt outside their gate.

Meena gets up and hurries to the door.

The gate opens and ... ROLI walks in. She's a mess. Her eyes are red and puffy.

"Beta," begins Meena, "what happened?"

Roli is very touched and broken at her mother's concern. At least, I'm still not alone. I still have my parents. They're all I have now. The one I thought was my world has betrayed my belief! She throws her arms around her mother, hugs her and breaks down into loud sobs.

"She's here," Jamanlal informs Simar and hangs up.

MUCH LATER

Siddhant is at a posh residential apartment building now. He walks along the corridor, stops before Room # 1409 and rings the bell.

A moment later, the door is opened by - Sanjana!

"Siddhant!" she gasps.

"Hey," smiles Siddhant.

"You're back!" She hugs him casually. Siddhant hugs her back.

"How's everything?" Sanjana opens the door and lets him in.

"Not too good yaar," he sighs, exasperated.

"Why?" she asks in concern, "what's wrong?"

Siddhant opens his mouth to reply, but stops as his phone starts ringing. It's Prem. "Yeah Prem," he says.

"Siddhant," he begins, "Roli has reached Vrindavan."

Siddhant sighs deeply in relief. "Thank God! Thanks Prem."

"Where are you?" he asks.

"I'll call you back," saying so, he ends the call.

He turns to Sanjana now. "We need to talk," he says seriously.

THE DWIVEDI HOUSE - AT THE SAME TIME

ROLI'S BEDROOM

Roli weeps bitterly as she lies crumpled face down on the bed. Meena tries her best to console her. "At least tell me what's wrong!" she demands gently.

But Roli doesn't talk. The more she thinks about it, the more it kills her. "Roli... please talk... say something!"

"Meena," calls Jamanlal from the door, "let her be. Give her some time. She'll be fine." Slowly, they leave Roli to herself.

THE CELEBRITY - PART 94

An original story by Archana Vinod

THE DWIVEDI HOUSE, ROLI'S BEDROOM - THE NEXT DAY

The mid-morning sun streams in through the blinds and soaks up her room with a new sense of purpose. Any other day would have had Roli on her toes, running around the house and being a good girl. But today is different. Though her biological clock woke her up as per her usual routine, she is in no mood to spend it with others. Her overwhelming sense of dread leaves her sulking around in bed.

She sits up and leans against the bed rest. Her head pounds from crying throughout the night. Her eyes are groggy. Her neck is stiff and painful. The urge to puke is overwhelming! It's like waking up with a bad hangover! She secretly wishes that all what had happened is just a nightmare. But no... she knows that it's real. And she has to face it.

From now on, Siddhantji is no longer a part of my life. We are done. For good!

Tears spring to her eyes at this thought. No, she tells herself. Don't cry again, you'll get such a bad headache and then you'll end up vomiting! Just calm down! She takes a deep breath and relaxes.

Just then, the creak of the door snaps her out of her thoughts. Must be Maa again... She had been trying so hard to make me eat. How can I tell her my story? She hasn't seen what I saw!

She hears her mother walk towards her, but she doesn't turn around. Her eyes are still focused on a shrub dancing in the morning breeze. She hears the tinkle of metal. The bed sinks beside her.

"Maa," she sighs and continues in a low voice, "please. Don't force me. I told you. I'm not hungry. I just need to be alone."

But in spite of this, she sees a spoon extend towards her mouth. It's loaded with breakfast.

"Maa please," she snaps and turns to her mother, "why can't you just -"

Her words drown in her own throat. It's not her mother. It's Siddhant! She is speechless and flustered. One looks into his eyes and her anger dissipates! Instead, it is replaced with hurt.

Her eyes begin to sting with tears again, but she quickly looks away, clambers out of bed and makes a hasty retreat.

Siddhant holds her back and gently pulls her into his embrace. She is still as he nuzzles into her shoulder and lets his energy flow through her. She can feel the sadness in his touch, the apology in his caress.

But the shocking images of him making out with Naina come rushing back into her head. The pain of his rejection and lack of trust in her over Shaan's case still lingers. No... I've been cheated. Hurt! I will not forgive him. I can't!!!!

He is stunned as she shoves him away. She walks off to the window and looks out as she tries to keep calm. "Why did you come?" she blurts out heaving.

He is behind her once again. "I need to talk to you yaar," he replies quietly.

"About what?" she snaps without looking around. He opens his mouth to talk but she cuts him off. "I don't want to hear anything! Moreover, there's nothing left to be explained. I have seen what I need to see. It's crystal clear."

"What you saw is not real," he protests.

"Oh please!" she snaps in frustration, "are you telling me that it's another camera trick?"

"Roli..."

She cuts him off again. "Or are you trying to tell me that it was an accident? That you tripped over your own feet!"

"Roli... At least let me --"

"Or I must be imagining things!!! I've seen enough Siddhantji! I believe my eyes!!!"

Siddhant sighs. "Over?" he asks, fed up. "Can I talk now?" He waits for her reply, but she just bites her trembling lip. "Fine," he continues, "remember Roli? Once you told me that we have five senses for a reason. Your eyes are not enough!"

Roli is quiet for a moment. Yes, she had told that once, when Siddhant had doubts on her regarding Shaan's case. But he wasn't listening to me either! "That's totally different!" she blurts out.

"Oh is it?" he responds, "and how different is that?"

"There was nothing going on between us," she snaps, "and yet you accused me of..." her voice trails away as the buried sadness emerges once again. "But that's not the case here! I saw it loud and clear with my eyes!!"

"Roli! What you saw was just a stunt pulled by that female!"

"I don't believe you Siddhantji," she goes on relentlessly, "were you that desperate? The moment you came out from jail you headed straight to her home to hump her!!"

"Roli!" he protests in disbelief. "What the hell""

"You didn't even bother to find out where I was!"

"Can you just stop for a minute?"

"Do other females turn you on?" she barks, "could be, right? I'm so old-fashioned and boring!!!"

Siddhant loses his nerve and pins her to the wall. "Dammit! Will you just listen to me!!?? Do you have any idea what you're saying?"

"Why should I listen to you when you never wanted to listen to me?"

"You must Roli..." he insists.

"Moreover," she continues, "why should I believe your words? After hiding the fact about that girl for three years, you expect me to believe you?"

"Roli, just..."

She cuts him off again. "You did all those things right under my nose! You went to her home! You gave her money, for what? And you expect me to believe you!!??"

"The money was for.."

"Trust and loyalty should be there on both sides," she trembles, "it's not just up to me to trust you! And why should I trust you when you never trusted me? Four years of marriage and that's all what your trust is about?"

"Can I just -"

"You thought that I was making out with Shaan," she cuts him off again, "so what would you like me to think??"

"Nothing hap""

"You even tried to hand me over to him!!" she snarls, "so if I bump into more friends tomorrow, what will you do? Hand me over??" She's hopping mad as all the old hurt resurfaces.

Siddhant is tired of trying to talk. She just won't listen!

"And even if I forgive you, what's the guarantee that you won't do the same thing tomorrow???"

"Roli... why are you -"

"What the hell Siddhantji!!!" she barks on, "if you can be friends with girls then why can't I be friends with guys?"

"Roli..." he tries to stop her. But nothing doing! She's off the hook now.

"It's perfectly alright for you to do intimate scenes with your co-actress," she goes on, "but if I chat with my friend, then all hell is loose!"

Siddhant slowly steps back and sits down. Her volley of questions makes him weak in the knees. He leans forward and massages his temples. He's getting a headache now!!

"If Shaan puts an arm over to console me, it's a problem. But if you bite Sanjana's fingers, it's perfectly alright!!"

Siddhant looks up, stunned. Bite her fingers? What's she talking about? "W-what? Who bit what?" he blurts out, confused.

"And wow! Does she turn you on?" she growls angrily, "why shouldn't she? She's hot, sizzling, exciting..."

Siddhant gets onto his feet now. "Whoa! Hang on! Can you just let me talk!!!?"

"Why should I?" she snaps, "you wouldn't let me to explain about Shaan! So why SHOULD I?"

"JUST SHUT UP!"

Siddhant's raised voice stuns Roli for a minute. He grabs her by the shoulders and shakes her hard. "I swear on our marriage Roli," he growls, "I swear on you, I have never cheated you. And I can prove it! Even Sanjana can! The hotel staff can! It's true. I was drunk and out of my senses that night! But nothing happened! Trust me! All what she did was try and change my soiled shirt, that's it! She's a friend, Roli. That's IT!"

Roli is quiet as she looks into Siddhant's eyes. There is some truth in them. But can she trust those eyes again?

"Someone gave wrong information to the police and they picked us up," he continues, "but that's it. Nothing happened that night. And as for Naina, I can uncover the game that she's been playing, if you give me a chance."

Roli is still quiet. Siddhant searches her eyes for answers, for her trust in him. But all what he sees is a question mark. "Trust me yaar," he hisses, "I love you. Only you."

"Image number 92," whispers Roli in a shaky voice, "on your laptop, Samsung back up files."

Siddhant is confused. What's she talking about? "What?" he asks.

"I can never trust you again," she continues as tears begin to form in her eyes, "infidelity begins in the mind and heart Siddhantji. The moment you take a liking to the other girl, it all ends."

"No-no-no. Wait---"

"On top of that," she continues, "you changed your password because you had something to hide."

"No Roli""

"Go home and check it out," saying this, she marks the end of the conversation by moving away from Siddhant's hold and presence. Once again, she stands before the window, staring at the shrub dancing in the breeze.

A moment later, she hears the door creak once again. She turns around and sees the room empty. Siddhant's gone.
