New Delhi: A 31-year-old surgeon, who was the batch topper in the masters course, strangled his MBA wife with a dupatta in their west Delhi house last Friday night, put the body in his car and travelled more than 1,000km before dumping it in the Ganga near Allahabad.
The accused, Dr Chandra Vibhas Sahu, a resident doctor at west Delhi's DDU hospital, had a history of violent behaviour towards his wife during the couple's 10-month-old marriage. The
victim, Supriya Tussar, 27, had done her BTech from Hyderabad and had a masters in business administration from Rajasthan. She had recently got a Rs 85,000 job offer from an IT major. Both hailed from Jharkhand.
Sahu, who was arrested on Monday, reportedly told the police that he was "physically and mentally incompatible'' with his wife. Though the immediate provocation for the crime is not clear, additional CP (west) V Renganathan said Sahu could have been planning it for some time. The local Hari Nagar police had received several calls in the past about fights between the couple with Sahu often getting violent.
The police said, after killing his wife, Sahu stuffed the body in a canvas bag and put it in his i20 car, which ironically was a wedding gift from the girl's family chosen by Supriya. He drove more than 800km with the body to Bihar. But suspecting he was being tracked by his in-laws, Sahu turned back and drove to Haria in rural Allahabad.
He dumped the body in the Ganges, expecting it to be washed away. "But the place where he dropped her body was a swamp caused by flooding. When the water receded, the UP cops recovered the body,'' said an investigator.
Sahu had earlier been served a legal notice after he beat up Supriya and threw her out of their Hari Nagar house in west Delhi. He had even got her admitted in a hospital for mental patients to prove that she was insane.
On September 23, the day of the murder, Supriya had told her mother on phone that Sahu was so angry that she feared for her life. "The next day, her cellphone was switched off. When her parents contacted Sahu, he misguided them saying he was in Mathura. The worried parents – Supriya was their only child – took a flight from Kolkata with two relatives and reached Delhi on Sunday. The couple's first-floor apartment was locked. They broke in with the help of the landlord but found no one there," said a police officer.
Police said Sahu returned to his house at midnight on Sunday. Supriya's family cornered him the next morning. He broke down and confessed to killing her.
