You have written it so beautifully that I cant just go and fall in love with those words and the person for who this is written!!
The eyes were indeed a challenge and something Kumud believed in that first glance and it is the betrayal of those eyes that has her existence challenged and heart break!!! She had believed in something good and suddenly that belief was proven to be wrong..ofcourse it was her ego which was hurt too...but she wont exactly be saying that...And on Saras's side it was more of his inner beliefs that were turned upside down...deep down he himself believed himself to be a good son...a good person...his mother's son..and a person told him coward!! COWARD!! he actually has jumped twice...in fire and in water since coming to the village...and yet he has been branded as that...his hurt and his anger at this is so so justified..and yet what bugs him most is that Kumud wont look at him...*sigh* such stubborn souls both of them!!

Thanks for these keen observations. Comprehensive and yet succinct- an ability,so obviously I lack!😳
On personal level too, she had some valid grouse; Even if we discount that her excited hopes were not personal doing of Saras, the tone and mode of communication was lacking courtesy in content if not in form. In his zeal to be forthright, he ended up being insensitive, arrogant, and distinctly unapologetic. Something, even Saras rued afterwards. Besides, he ended up appearing escapist and 'coward' too. Coward, for clearly he was unable to convince his own father. And he was seeking her in securing the break! Throwing onus of breaking the alliance on her! All these was uncalled for from her end. So yes, unwittingly Saras did come across insensitive...😛
And then of course her tainted picture, you so aptly put.😊
