I agree, this aspect of the story seems really weird when SLB has modernized every other part of it!!!

Writing letters in a time when e-mails are a better and faster way of communication seems kinda illogical, plus phone calls are also a better medium...Kumud's family does have a phone, but yes it'd luk pretty bad if he called up to say "I won't marry you"

Guman does intercept Saraswatichandra's letter to Kumud and uses it to instigate Saras's father against this match.

Also, their lovestory developed via letter-exchange. So, letters play an important role in the original story.

Remember the song: "Phool tumhe bheja hai khat main...". What will he send with emails - flower pics 😆?

All the humor aside, even though writing letters is old-fashioned, it is quite romantic. Letters give a tactile feeling. It will be akin to people preferring printed books, even if e-books are cheaper. convenient and don't occupy space The characters have been transported to modern times, yet they have old world charm and it will be very much in characters to exchange letters. They may start with emails, but then decide that it is hand-written letters that they prefer. Theirs will be an unhurried love story, instant make up-break up wali nahi.
